Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City art emerges
Magazine covers offer first look at prequel

The first Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City artwork has appeared online, via various upcoming magazine covers shown off by Capcom.

The art, as well as giving us a brief impression of the "dark and sinister" atmosphere promised for the squad shooter, introduces a number of the four squad characters set to feature in the game.

In case you missed the first details, Operation Raccoon City's set to have you and up to three other players roaming Resident Evil 2-era Raccoon City as Umbrella special forces, taking out survivors, US spec-ops teams and any horrible bio-creatures you may encounter along the way.

It sounds promising. More details here (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/295626/news/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-is-official/).

Resident Evil: Raccoon City is 'a spin-off', takes series in 'new direction' - Capcom
Producer discusses Resi's latest

Capcom's discussed its just announced Resident Evil shooter, Operation Raccoon City, telling the French OPM it sees the title as "a spin-off" from the main survival horror series.

The game, which is being developed by SOCOM studio Slant Six, looks to be quite a departure for the Resident Evil series, with 4-player squad shootouts replacing the traditional slow-paced monster scares.

Producer Masachika Kawata told OPM France (via NeoGAF): "For us, it's about a new direction for RE. It's kind of a spin-off. That's why it doesn't have a number. It's not necessarily entirely in the canon, but it's totally immersed in the mythology.

Asked why Capcom chose to move the series into third-person shooter territory, Kawata-san said: "As you know it's our fifteenth anniversary, which is a long time for a video game series... Some players came to the series when it made a turn towards action [in Resident Evil 4] (still with horror elements, though). This design led the series towards third-person shooter.

"The idea [to work with a Western developer] came up when we were working on Lost Planet 2," he added. "We didn't have any other teams internally to work on it. Western studios are known for their ease of development, and in terms of gameplay, this genre.

"We just bought a studio in Vancouver (Blue Castle) and when we were looking for external partners Blue Castle talked with Slant Six, and they were well known for their online games and their coding skills. We met them and they were big RE fans. A good starting point!"

He added, calming fan fears: "I want to clarify something, even though [this is] a shooter, there are still tons of horror elements."

Yesterday Capcom promised a "dark and sinister" atmosphere and "thrilling triple threat battle" for the shooter. See more Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City details here (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/295232/news/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city-first-details/).

So zombies are confirmed, that is a plus. Also, moving while shooting.

But... Anybody else notice the familiar stink of a cheap Xbox Live Arcade title on that trailer?

Either that, or this is the worst teaser ever made for a AAA game. U.G.L.Y. They aint got no alibi.

/I'm still buying a coop zombie shooting game... Assuming it is more than any of the millions of zombie defense shooters out there.

Is that a "Hunter"??  Still remember those things creeping the sh*t out of me in RE1, also liking the visual language on these screens - noisy, dark, saturated. ;D Would be interesting to see if the game retains that.

I'd figure "meatshield" rather than the hostage label would fit.

No.  I like the concept of taking zombies hostage.

It's the combat equivalent of dropping your pants at the supermarket.

lol

Also ... what's preventing that zombie from just turning it's head and biting its hostage-taker in the neck?  I don't think a zombie would have much appreciating for the hostage/hostage-taker dynamic.

I'd imagine you're right, that particular zombie has some real [Barney Fife (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barney_Fife)] qualities though. Probably not much of a threat. I can almost hear the Andy Griffith theme through that image.

Spent a few tiring days at Comic-Con SD this weekend and got a view at this, looks damn good, although somewhat repetitive.  Things most likely change once you get 3 other friends in there to play. Hopefully.

I watched my nephew play this tonight and while he says he enjoys the game, his main complaints are the cover system, use of grenades, and how the AI works.
