The Secret of Monkey Island is the first and one of the most loved of the Monkey Island series, and now it's coming exclusively to Xbox Live Arcade and PC. In it you guide lovable yet useless pirate wannabe Guybrush Threepwood as he bumbles around the Caribbean and attempts to stop the evil Ghost Pirate LeChuck.

Unsurprisingly a game released just shy of 20 years ago doesn't really look that impressive smeared across a massive HD television - more on that in a minute.

But rather than just upscaling the graphics, LucasArts has gone back and recreated the whole thing with a lavish hand-painted new look - and a full voice over for every character in the game, using the original voice actors from the sequels. Similarly the music, including the classic theme tune, has been re-recorded by a live band.

The aim is to make the game accessible for new players, so the new design removes the inventory and action interface from the main play screen and hides it in pop-up menus.

There's also a smart built-in hint system that gives progressively clearer advice on how to solve the famously obscure puzzles, all the way up to spelling out every step.

All well and good for the newbies, but what of we the faithful, who want it just the way it was? No problem: a single button tap instantly transforms the game into early 90s grit-o-vision, complete with the original inventory screen and text dialogue.

LucasArts promise fan-pleasing extras, too - devs were shy on details, but they did show how they've added the Spiffy The Dog conversation - famously included on the original box but cut from the game. We can't imagine many people will pass up such a lovingly detailed and genuinely fresh remake.

The Secret of Monkey Island will be released on Xbox Live Arcade next Wednesday.
The July 15th release date was confirmed as part of an announcement that LucasArts will be bringing its games to PC download service Steam - titles like Armed and Dangerous and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis are among the confirmed games. Does their confirmed Steam status mean an impending Xbox Live Arcade release?
