Title: Zombies.
Post by: BackupLight on November 24, 2011, 10:14:24 PM
Just got done watching another of the more awesome episodes of Walking Dead and it gets me thinking every time that, really, there's not a "great" zombie game out there. There are, of course, zombie games - Resident Evil, Dead Rising, Left 4 Dead.. but none of them to me really dominate as the kind of game I'd hope they could be. Are there any others out there that I'm missing? Resident Evil I always felt was clunky in the controls - which I know makes or breaks the game for many. Dead Rising is a little too comedic, the save system put me off and the limited time frame was a bit meh. And then Left 4 Dead, ALMOST there, but just lacking in true zombie-apocalypse storyline that the game could've done better for. A great game in itself, just.. not quite.

I think what I REALLY want is the kind of game Fallout is - but based around a post-zombie apocalyptic world, fighting for scraps to survive and rebuild in the threat of the hoard.

That's all! Zombie-fan-boy moment over.

:-X

It is, but I think there's room for more. Like, more RPG than FPS. At what it's trying to do, it's brilliant. It's just not quite what I have in mind when I think of that defining genre-building game. Maybe what I really want is a zombie-based MMO. Evil things that they are!

Yet to try that one, is it any good?

What you want is Z-Day then? The real life zombie experience but in game format, safety of Z-Day from behind the controller.

Z-Day will happen, are you prepared?

I hope so. I bought it, just haven't had the time to play it.

Check out some gameplay and judge yourself.

A couple years ago some kid won some indie developer conference contest for his game concept of an open world sandbox zombie game.

I remember thinking all of the little details were really interesting, but can't remember specifics.  I remember is that every time you "die", you continue playing as a different character, and your previous character then exists in the game as a zombie.  It was a serious take, and focused a lot on decisions to keep you & your group alive rather than just endless combat (Dead Rising).

I am totally ready for Z-Day. Find a gaggle of survivors, head for one of the small islands off the coast of the UK, clean house, turn into amateur-fort and start plundering the mainland for provisions.

Need to work out where my nearest chainsaw retailer is and we're set! ;D

Looked at Dead Island briefly today, seems pretty awesome - will check it out when I have some money, it seems to have become pretty cheap pretty quick.

I was under the impression that Left 4 Dead didn't have zombies per se, so much as infected people.  Not sure though

Infected is just what writers call people when they don't wanna use the word zombies. :D

I <3ed Resident Evil Code Veronica and 4, they were perfect zombie games for their time imo.  They really fell of the boat with 5 but I have hopes they will jump back on.   I am not usually a fan of the new kind of "fast zombie" style, but left4dead has a good feel and it's insanely fun to play.

I've tried and re-tried the Resi Evil games a few times over the years and I can just never quite get into it, literally the controls are what puts me off every time. Sad and fickle of me, and unusually so, I know.

Left 4 Dead is amazing at what it does - but I think Failed hit it on the nail, I just want some post-Z-Day RPG. Eternal gratitude to anyone who makes it happen.   :-\

Yeah, the controls are most certainly outdated now. I recently bought the remastered RE4 for the xbox and it was annoying to say the least.  I think a huge part of the problem with RE5 was that they didn't really update them at all. The fact that you couldn't run and shoot really annoyed me. If played in their time on the correct system though, the older games were really awesome (I think anyhow.)

I really enjoyed Resident Evil (the first one) on gamecube.  I thought the sound and graphics were well done.

People I know who have played Dead Island have enjoyed it, I gather from what I've been told it's the type of game you need to give a few hours to before it get's going.
There was also a patch released for it that eradicated early glithes in the game that seemed to put people off it.

I'll give it a shot, it's like £25 at the minute too. Most games aren't that bad when they're cheaper, but for £40 you expect something exemplary.

I loved Dead Island, was one of the most fun games i played this year. Something surprisingly satisfying about cutting limbls/heads off of zombies in first person.

It is a very glitchy game and the character movement feels really stiff but its still really fun. I didn't even have to give it a couple hours to get into it, only took about 30 minutes before i was hooked. It felt like Fallout with zombies to me which Fallout is one of my favorite games. If you can get past the few shortcomings of the game like glitches and very poor voice acting then you could very well enjoy the game. (at least the voice acting is better than Just Cause 2, SkorPIO lol)

JC2 had the WORST voice acting I've ever seen. I kinda prefer anything that isn't Halo or CoD-ish to be in 3rd person, but eh. Will still try it sooner or later.

It has horrid voice acting but such amazing gameplay. I don't think Dead Island would work in 3rd person too well. Wouldn't be as immersive as it is. It also would be even harder to hit the zombies with your weapons let alone shoot them when you find guns.
