The end is here. Life as you knew it has gone to hell after the mother of all zombie outbreaks. Now you and the few scattered survivors must band together to survive and rebuild in a 3rd-person action game set in a dynamic open world. You choose where to make your stand, designing and fortifying your home base, performing daring raids for food and ammunition, and rescuing other playable survivors with unique talents.
It feels like this genre is getting over-saturated, but this does look good in terms of visuals and setting. Wonder what about it, is going to make it stand out though (the 'open-world' aspect is a good start). Will keep an eye out.
When I saw the trailer, I thought the same thing. But I'll always enjoy a game if it's good. Even if it's an over-saturated genre, I'll just be sure to play something different in between the dozens of zombie games I have. ;)
Yeah, that's probably the best approach. I had to taper off my Fallout: New Vegas gameplay with L.A. Noire in anticipation for Borderlands 2. :P
State of Decay looks promising, it might just be a matter of finding the appropriate slot for it, also pending any DotW promotions.

You know it dawg
State of Decay first look - Minecraft meets Dead RisingZombie survival to get your teeth into
Apparently the team at Undead Labs are taking their strategy for surviving a zombie apocalypse very seriously, because their new XBLA project will road test the strength of a contingency plan. State of Decay is a detailed survival sim, letting you see how you'd hold out in the face of grey, lurching death.
This isn't the frantic zombie shooter we're used to. It's all about long-term survival - days, weeks after an outbreak in isolated small-town America. Killing zombies is all part of that of course, but on a tactical level. Once you've established a main camp, plus outposts, how you keep them safe is up to you.
Every choice you make shapes the open-play world. If you cause chaos you'll attract more zombies to your base. The undead nasties also investigate noises, so do you sacrifice speed to quietly sneak around them, or jump into a muscle car to outrun them? Looting too many resources leaves the area depleted, and these items won't regenerate - smash all the cars up, and you'll run out of cars for good.
With effort you can grow food in your garden, though there's always the option of scavenging further and further from home - but on a 16 km-square map, this can get very daunting. Weapons are also finite until you can craft your own, but if you don't keep zombie numbers down they'll start massing to attack. Luckily, you don't have to face them alone.
Along the way you can pick up survivors. It means more mouths to feed, but they'll bring valuable skills to your team - plus you can't build upgrades or defences if you don't have enough labour to do it. Defences are key, since characters can actually die - permanently. You can carry on leading as another member of the team, but that other guy? He's gone forever.
The two years this game has spent in development so far look well-spent. With a dynamic world and hundreds of tactics to live your own personal survival hell, it's time to barricade the windows and prepare yourself for a zombie invasion.
I'm loving what I'm seeing.
It looks a bit like Fort Zombie. I just hope that its a little more forgiving than that, though. Fort Zombie is a mix of skill and hoping the random number god will show you mercy.
Five Reasons State of Decay Could Be 2013's Deepest Darkest XBLA Game (http://www.oxm.co.uk/48756/previews/five-reasons-state-of-decay-could-be-2013s-deepest-darkest-xbla-game/)
Not to attempt to compare, but if this had "Walking Dead" attached to its title and with a bit more of a connection to the series' backstory, I'd call it a win over "[Survival Instinct] (http://www.360df.org/forum/index.php?topic=2993.0)". But what would I know...?

I was tempted to say the same, but didn't want to kick the zombie horse while it was down. ;)

This kind of looks good, which doesn't seem right for an XBLA game.
I'm liking what I'm seeing.
Is there a release date other than 1st quarter 2013?

Not that I've found, but if it's going to be 1st quarter, it will have to be within the next 4-5 weeks.
According to the IGN Facebook page, State of Decay is out in June. :)
They also have a new trailer (http://uk.ign.com/videos/2013/04/12/state-of-decay-gameplay-trailer?utm_campaign=twposts&utm_source=twitter).

State of Decay due this week on XBLA
PC version still to be dated.
Undead Labs' State Of Decay will be making its way onto the Xbox Live Arcade this week, bringing open-world zombie-laden survival horror for download in just a couple of days' time.
Formerly known as Class 3, State of Decay is all about managing your resources and striving to stay alive while avoiding fraught encounters with the undead. You'll need to hoard your supplies carefully, and scope out encampments where you can stock up for the journey ahead.
State of Decay will be coming to XBLA on June 5th for a projected price of 1600 Microsoft Points.

I've been enjoying the game. I kinda took a break from it due to a ragequit involving a Big Un ripping Marcus in half. I never not wanted an achievement so bad. :'(
Undead Labs Details State of Decay Sandbox Mode
Undead Labs has gone into a little more detail about what we can expect from State of Decay’s upcoming Sandbox Mode.
Responding to how the studio believes returning players want to enjoy State of Decay, the DLC strips away pretty much everything and just leaves you to survive for as long as possible.
Writing on the Undead Labs site, the developer explained that there’s no storyline constraints, and resources and characters are finite; once they’re gone, they’re gone. This puts an extra emphasis on scavenging, as once you’ve picked up ammo or whatever, it won’t respawn.
“Survival means making sacrifices,†says the post. “Will you bring your best friend, or will the auto mechanic need his seat? Will you load your pack with ammunition, or with medicine?
“You can’t be sure what you’ll find in the new valley, and your entire community stash won’t fit in the RV. In the end, the question of what you’ll bring might matter less than whether you can reach the RV at all. It’s like the zombies know you’re leaving â€" as the RV’s engine revs to life, they step up their attacks, and turn your own backyard into hostile territory. If you do get out, it will be by the skin of your teeth.
“But hard choices have their rewards, too. In a later article, we’ll discuss the upside of playing the long game…the Achievements, the unlockables, and the struggle for Leaderboard dominance.â€

State of Decay Breakdown DLC Hits Month
State of Decay’s first add-on is planned for release “by the end of October,†according to developer Undead Labs.
Speaking on the the studio’s website, executive producer Jeff Strain revealed that the DLC, called Breakdown, is currently in pre-certification at Microsoft.
"Through next week the QA teams will be playing Breakdown, logging any issues they find, and sending feedback to the development team,†said Strain.
“We'll spend our (probably quite long) days reviewing, prioritizing, and squashing bugs, and incorporating the design feedback from the QA teams, members of our publishing team at Microsoft, and of course our own developers here at the Lab.
"The plan is to have all that wrapped up and submit formally to certification testing at the end of next week. But, assuming no catastrophes, we plan on getting Breakdown into your hands by the end of October."
Breakdown will challenge players by significantly boosting the game’s difficulty through each playthrough. "I've made it my goal to create a version of the game that gets so hard by the end, I can barely play it, and then let you folks show me how it's done,†said designer Geoffrey Card in a previous post, adding, “Are you ready?"
Undead Labs has sold over one million copies since its June launch.
