BAFTA 2013 Video Game Nominations Announced

With the red carpet only recently rolled up following the British Academy Film Awards, BAFTA has announced the nominees for the British Academy Games Awards.

PSN-exclusive Journey leads the way with no less than eight nominations, including one for Best Game. The Walking Dead shuffles closely behind with seven noms, Far Cry 3 has six and arty farty PC and Mac title Dear Esther (which is brilliant, btw) has five.

Halo 4, Borderlands 2, Assassin's Creed 3 and The Room (iOS), meanwhile, each have four nominations. You can read the whole, very long, list below.

The awards themselves take place on Tuesday, 5th March at the London Hilton on Park Lane, with comedian Dara O'Briain taking on hosting duties. Dara O’Brian, unless you didn’t know, is a proper gamer who even does stand-up on the subject. So bless him for that.

UK viewers can watch the awards on the Challenge television channel (Sky 125, Freeview 46, Virgin 139) on Monday, 11th March at 10pm.

Dishonored Takes Home Best Game Award at 2013 BAFTAs

Arkane Studios’ Dishonored picked up the Best Game award at last night’s BAFTA’s in a ceremony dominated by digital releases.

Of the 18 gongs up for grabs, boxed retail games netted just just four awards. And although it should be noted that some of the gongs - like Best Mobile & Handheld - obviously preclude disc-based releases, it was nevertheless a statement of intent for the academy.

By far the most celebrated winner on the night was Journey, thatgamecompany’s beautiful PSN-exclusive. It picked up no less than a quarter of the total awards, including Original Music, Artistic Achievement, Game Design, Audio Achievement, and Online Multiplayer. Another PSN-exclusive, The Unfinished Swan, won Debut Game and Innovation.

Meanwhile, XCOM: Enemy Unknown won Best Strategy, Far Cry 3 won Best Action and Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes won Best Family game.

Full Winners below:

Debut Game - The Unfinished Swan
Original Music - Journey
Story - The Walking Dead
Sports/Fitness - New Star Soccer
Game Innovation - The Unfinished Swan
Artistic Achievement - Journey
