Land of the glee
The Man with No Name strolls into Fyrestone with nothing but a date with death on the cards. Dr Death, that is. Or Dr Zed, if you're being picky. Ducking under the awning of the black market body-part-dealer's caravan, No Name's greeted by a wretched sight: a dead body splayed over a rusting table, amputated legs left to fester in a bin, skulls sat in a line on bookshelves and blood absolutely everywhere. Awkward.
Out in the sun-drenched dirt lay fresh cadavers with Zed's name written all over them. They were bandits who tried to attack No Name but never stood a chance. Thankfully they weren't residents so the town's population signage (recently repainted to say 24) needn't be changed again; the sorry graveyard with half-tyres in place of headstones needn't be expanded; the next of kin needn't be informed. Out here in the ruthless deserts of Pandora life will go on. And, as Dr Zed would say, death will keep providing for those still breathing.
Fyre in the disco
As far as intros go it's not a bad one. By this point 'No Name' has actually been given a name, although which one depends on your decision. There are four options to pick from; Roland the soldier, Brick the berserker, Lilith the siren and Mordecai the sniper. Each character is proficient with certain weapons and has bespoke attack options. Mordy, for instance, has a pet bird Bloodwing he can release to attack nasties. Roland's special move is more defensive minded, as he can deploy an automated turret and shield for a short period of time.
Whoever you pick turns out to be irrelevant, the date with Dr Zed is unavoidable. On your way to his surgery you'll spot his posters all about town. 'Donate blood: If you can bleed you can help! Contact Dr Zed or just get shot to help the cause,' one says. We're not sold.
Dr Zed isn't an evil man, however. He's just doing what he needs to get by. When we meet we're not asked for body parts or blood, instead the request is much more humble. Fix his vending machine, that's all he asks. The mission takes us outside the walls of Fyrestone and into Skag Gully, home to the wolf-like skags who object to our intrusion. Turns out they're not the only ones.
Out in Borderlands' world there are few friends. Occasionally you'll find somebody to talk to, and more often than not you'll discover recordings which set up side-quests. But the majority of roamers are hostile, and they'll need to be taken down as you scavenge. The bandits in this area are ruled by the fearsome Nine Toes, and your next task is to hunt him down and wipe him out.
With over a million automatically generated weapons, ammo juggling could have been troublesome. Gearbox has made it simple: every weapon is placed into one of eight categories and ammunition for that weapon class is universal.
Provided you have the dollars you can buy ammo from vending machines (pay attention to the timed special offers too, as we managed to pick up rubberised grenades - great for bouncing and exploding on enemy contact), otherwise you'll need to search dead bodies. Whenever anybody dies they'll drop all the items in their possession. Tap x and you'll pick up the object you're looking at. Hold the button and you'll scoop up everything. A similar trick works with new weapons; tap x and you'll stick it in your pack, hold x and it becomes your equipped gun. The control nuances are simple but really aid equipment juggling.
Comedy Club
Coming from the masters of Deadly Serious Series with a Deadly Serious Message, Brothers in Arms, we expected Borderlands to pack a pensive tone. Our last peek certainly gave us that impression. Things have changed. The switch in graphics has clearly altered more than looks, and the opening five minutes now ranks among the most charming and amusing beginnings to any game on the 360.
After an intro video we are not allowed to see we're beckoned over to meet a small droid called Clap Trap. He's a cross between R2-D2 and C-3PO, and runs at the slightest sign of trouble. Waste any attacking bandits and you'll find Clap Trap cowering in a corner, shaking with fright.
Why should you care? Because Clap Trap is hilarious. Watch him fix a gate and he'll turn around, throw his hands in the air and yell, "Aaaaaaaand open!" victoriously as the gate slowly grinds upwards and then crunches back into the ground in a shower of sparks. See him catch a stray bullet and he'll writhe around on the floor screaming, "Oh my god I'm leaking. I think I'm leaking!" The little chuckle bot daren't stray out of Fyrestone's walls so his screen time's painfully short, but his comments regarding other Clap Traps elsewhere suggests we'll meet plenty of his cousins.
You'll visit plenty of these settlements too. Pandora is huge, and your overall goal - to find The Vault - will take you to her deepest and darkest corners. To ensure you're rarely lost, a compass permanently sits at the bottom of the HUD, and waypoints flash up whenever a new task has been accepted.
For the most part this gigantic world is seamless. Apart from transitions between major areas there's no loading to be found. Nor did we spy any cut-scenes. Action is played out in real time, and voice messages from various acquaintances (plus a mysterious lady called Guardian Angel) keep the plot ticking over during moments of calm.
Mutineers
Our hands-on time was incredibly impressive, but it didn't help answer our biggest question - why the game underwent such a graphical overhaul. Fortunately big brass Randy Pitchford was on hand to explain the cosmetic surgery. "It was mutiny," he explains. We all laugh. Turns out he was serious...
Back in 2008 when the team decided to increase the game's scale the art team realised their job was almost complete. With all the assets complete they returned to the original concept art to see how things had changed. Unbeknownst to project lead Randy, they found a gamut of personality that had slowly been shaved away between the concept stage and the alpha code. In secret they began working on a prototype graphics switchover and presented their ideas to the entire team three weeks later.
The rest is something akin to history. The style change is responsible for our new-found interest in the title, but it's the quality of game that's got us truly excited about the release. You should never judge a book by its cover, but sometimes, every once in a while, a good looker can entice you into what turns out to be a real gem. Borderlands fits that category to a T.
Because we weren't exactly dismayed by Borderlands' delay last year we approached the hands-on with a fair amount of caution. We were wrong to worry. Borderlands is looking great - a sort of Fallout 3-lite with FPS shooting mechanics and added humour. Good luck finding anybody who doesn't find that combination appealing...

i pre-ordered it as well
I'm getting it, gonna play co-op with my mate, gonna buy this instead of L4D2.
Is Dragon Age splitscreen co-op ??

So far I'm loving it.
The drop-in-drop-out works flawlessly for me so far. I really like the "look" of the game. The gameplay sort of feels like a mesh of Halo 3, Left 4 Dead, and COD4, which suits me very well.
So far I only have one gripe. I completed all of the beginning missions, and leveled up to 7. Now the only two missions remaining in the area I'm confined to require Level 10! I think I've searched everywhere in the area but cannot find any other missions, only random fights with animals and bandits.
So I'm guessing the game forces you to grind for 3 Levels? That seems like poor game design. When you complete missions in the order intended, you should have the resources you need to proceed. Being forced to grind 3 Levels seems a little dickish.
However, I could be wrong. It was pretty late when I came to this conclusion, and I was ready to go to bed. If Crawler or anyone else has already finished the Bonehead / Vehicle mission, can you tell me how you did it? Were you below Level 10 and just fought your way through it?
i havent gotten to it yet. im only level 7. i read it was a bit of a grinder in one of the early previews so i expected it. im really liking it so far, tho im still new to the game. it does kinda remind me of a dumbed down fallout 3. it wont win any game of the year awards, but its pretty fun.

I figured it out. There was an area of the map I hadn't explored, and (surprise, surprise) I found Level 7 missions there.
I'm now nearing Level 16 and loving the game. I haven't played Fallout 3, which is probably a good thing. Everyone keeps comparing it, but since it wasn't made by Bethesda, Bioware or Square, it's not going to come on top. I will say this though, I'm enjoying my first few hours playing Borderlands than I did the first few hours playing Fable 2. ;)
I really like the little ideas Gearbox "borrowed" from other games. The control scheme is nearly identical to COD4, which is great. The weapons and upgrades are similar (but simplied) to Mass Effect. Some characters and environments are slightly reminiscent of Bioshock. The game is like a love letter to some of the best games of the past decade.
Gonna go see if Blockbuster have this tonight, rent it and if i love it, i'm gonna buy it next week.
EDIT: just watched the video, i'm gonna LOVE THIS GAME .... (please don't Mainstream me)

You lying piece of sh*t.
You're a level 27 Siren last I saw.
Also I might get this tomorrow and make my triumphant return to XBL, who wants to join me?
I noticed over the weekend that almost all the American (& Canadian) people on my friends list (not all of which are 360DF) were playing this compared to only a few of my European friends!
Was this game hyped up in the States more or after Fallout 3 is there an increase in this type of game? I cant say I've seen any TV adverts for it over here.
I bought Borderlands this morning, decided my stack of scorewhore games needed to go and swapped them all for Borderlands.
My mates coming in today and we're gonna play some split-screen!
You will love it Failed. I've only scratched the surface so far, but it is very good.
I love RPG's just the thought of levelling up is getting me all hot in the spot.

I've probably seen more Brutal Legend ads than Borderland ads, but the 'buzz' for Borderland has been pretty steady this year in the magazines I read and the Xbox.com forums.
I think the shameless violence and 'attitude' of the game is probably more appealing to the US than UK. American's love nothing more than seeing blood splatter on the screen followed by a narrative "f*ck Yeah!"

Same here. Once I passed Level 10 or 15, I seemed to level up rapidly. I'm already approaching Level 31, and I probably only play it for 3 hours each day.

Loving Borderlands. Have a level 19 Sniper and my mate has a level 19 Brick on our co-op game and have started a Soldier to play solo and make sure i get the achieves i'll miss playing co-op.
the siren gets no love
Siren is the best.
I love Simon...

I've been playing co-op as the Siren.
I catch my buddy checking me out every once in a while. "HEY! My eyes are up here!" :D
But seriously ... the Siren is the best, strategically speaking. I think she's the most balanced and versatile, equally gifted at offensive and defensive tactics.
My buddy plays as the Hunter, and get's frustrated when I kill everyone before he has time to aim his sniper. 8)

i chose her because of her action skill. it just seemed the most fun to play around with.
WOOHOO I JUST GOT THIS.

Also the soldier isn't sh*t, the soldier is just the straight up support dude, what he does best is help others.
His only attack tree is his infantry one, if you want something good with him you'll have to mix and match.
http://downloads.2kgames.com/borderlands/website/skilltree/roland/#01555000050550505050000
This is probably the best set-up you can get going solo, if you're doing co-op focus on support and medic. Also if you don't like shotguns then replace scattershot with assault.
The key with that set up is doing more damage, having more health and more ammo capacity and turning your turret into a powerful force but you can still survive while it cools down.
I'm doing alright with him now, i tried shotguns for a bit but have settled on Assault Rifles. Got bullet damage up first and am now working on getting the shield skills, will probably not get nearer the bottom of the tree till closer to level 50 as all the skills i'd want are near the top.

I added this to my rental list without even seeing it but judging the amount of people on my friends list that play it, looks like a good decision, i'd like to know just how big the game is though, as i tend not to rent games that will take ages to finish.
I've had it for a week and have hammered it, looks a massive game though and the achieves are pretty easy. It's like Fallout but quicker and there isn't as much wandering aimlessly.

I looked at the games on my shelf last night and counted more than 20. That's waaaaay more than I usually have, since I like to trade off the ones I've completed. Unfortunately, there have been so many great releases, I just don't have enough time to complete anything before the next release.
I have promised myself I am going to 100% Dragon Age before going back to any of my previous purchases. That leaves Borderlands, Brutal Legend, Marvel UA2, and a dozen others collecting dust. I need to marry me a sugar-mama so I can quit my job and play videogames all day. 8)

Rejoice! Come December 8, you'll be able to grab your own copy of the Borderlands soundtrack in store or via iTunes, as Sumthing Else Music has announced (via Big Download) that it's handling the publishing rights. There is one issue, however. "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" by Cage The Elephant will not be included on the disc, so you're going to need to continue rocking your F5 finger on this YouTube page (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t99bpilCKw) if you want to keep listening to it. We know, it sucks, but a calloused index finger is a small price to pay for listening to an entirely badass song forever.
when i read this, i was gonna buy it, then i got to 'Aint no rest for the Wicked' will not be included and .... i won't be buying it!

Borderlands DLC to add another six hours
Gearbox has revealed that The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned will be roughly the same size as a small exisiting Borderlands zone and provide around six hours of new gameplay.
"It's probably about the size of the Arid Badlands," design director Paul Helqist told MTV Multiplayer.
The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is Borderland's first batch of DLC and costs the equivalent of $10 on PlayStation Network and 800 Microsoft Points (£6.80 / €9.60) on Xbox Live.
After buying and installing the content you will be able to fast-travel to Jakobs Cove using a teleporter. But you can get there without a teleporter as well.
Gearbox has designed The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned to cater for all players level 10 and over. Enemies, therefore, scale according to your character's power, which means you'll face as much of a challenge at 20 as you will at 50. Plus, each time you return the island's inhabitants will scale again.
While there is (obviously) loot to collect, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned plays more heavily on location and plot. Most of the enemies you'll encounter are new or variations of existing baddies, and you'll find the eponymous zombies much harder to blow apart - they'll appear in larger quantities too.
Helqist said there's a monster called a Loot Goon that carries an enormous treasure chest on his back that can be plundered should you be able to fell the beast. "We have some fun surprises with Clap Trap, as well," he added.
I think i might leave the DLC until next year and see if they release more or if a Borderlands collection is available.
I really enjoyed Borderlands, but I kinda burned the game out.. spent like 2 weeks straight on it addicted.. Only way to refresh the game is play with someone who hasn't played it before.. :(
They should take away the cap.. (Lv50) and add more play throughs with one char.. with enemies still scaling with you.. I dont see the problem with a formulae working out the difficulty of enemies lvl's.
They'll probably move the cap to 60 with the new DLC.

As noted by PS3Trophies.org, it appears that more Borderlands DLC is imminent. The five recently added Trophies point to three coliseums, called The Angelic Ruins, The Gully and Hell-Burbia, all of which appear to have "lesser" and "larger" challenges.
Eurogamer mentions that Borderlands Creative Director Mikey Neuman was all set to reveal something on Twitter, but it appears the marketing powers changed the announcement to a "later occasion." Publisher Take-Two seems happy with the success of Borderlands and critical reception to the game's first DLC pack, The Zombie Island of Doctor Ned. Reaching out to 2K Games about the DLC, we were informed, "No official announcements have been made regarding future Borderlands DLC at this time."
2K Games announced today that the second piece of downloadable content for Borderlands™, Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, will be available on December 29, 2009 from the Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft for 800 Microsoft Points and on January 7, 2010 from the PlayStation®Network for $9.99. The downloadable content will also be available on Windows PC. This explosive piece of action-driven content is in development at Gearbox Software and provides players with more methods of destruction as they tear through the denizens of Pandora.
Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot is an intense single-player or cooperative experience that expands the mayhem by adding three new Riot Mode arenas where players will endure an onslaught of Pandora's baddest enemies. Working together, players will fend off the masses as they fight for fame, honor, and more importantly, loot. Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot also adds a new bank feature, which allows players extra storage capacity for when they encounter one of the more than 16 million weapons that Borderlands has to offer; and the ability to acquire two additional skill points as quest rewards, making their characters even more powerful than before
Gearbox's Randy Pitchford made a pretty bold claim when he said that the new Borderlands DLC, "Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot," would comprise more than just new levels, but an entirely new mode as well. After an hour or so spent battling it out in Moxxi's tournament, we're happy to report that, though it doesn't feel like a brand new game, it provides a welcome shake-up of the main story's quest-based structure.
From the moment you descend into the Underdome and meet sadistic sexpot Moxxi, you're reminded that Borderlands boasts more style and flair than practically any game this year. As we learn in a cool cinematic, Moxxi's biding her time until meeting her fourth husband by making treasure hunters battle it out in her underground arenas.
The structure is simple: A wave of enemies enters, you kill them all, madly try to collect the health and ammo refills that drop from the sky, and then start fresh. Each wave is themed, like the Gun Wave (everyone is armed) and the Horde Wave, which pitches an army of flaming bad guys on a collision course with you.
At first, the only quest available in the hub that connects Moxxi's three tournaments tasks you with completing five rounds of five waves in each arena. You don't need a calculator to tell you that's a whole lot of murdering. Luckily, the constant narration and berating from Moxxi and the roar of the crowd help the fights feel like more of a spectacle than just a connected series of battles.
The weird thing is that battling in the arenas doesn't award you experience -- nor weapons. Though the rewards might be delicious if you make your way to the end of an arena (I'm not sure, my poor Level 11 could never get that far), it robs Underdome fights of the feeling of constant character growth, which is really the driving force behind Borderlands. (Update: Gearbox tells us that new weapons drop underneath Moxxi after each round but "the XP thing is intentional after a lot of focus testing. It breaks the rest of the game if you let people crank up too much XP. This is a separate game mode.")
It seems like, even with Moxxi lording over the proceedings and with occasional variables like reduced gravity, playing through all three arenas would start to feel a little grindy after a while. Of course, I'm sure that the whole thing is turned on its ear with the addition of a co-op buddy, and isn't that the way Borderlands was meant to be played in the first place?
Say "sup, baby" to Moxxi.

bewbs!
So,is this any good?
If Mad Moxxi, the star of the upcoming expansion for Borderlands, has any endearing qualities (and we assume she does, seeing as how she's already netted three husbands), they're not present in the opening cinematic of the expansion, posted above. Who would want to settle down with a self-centered, death-dealing vixen like Ms. Moxxi? By the look of her, we're guessing clowns, mimes, and practitioners of other pasty-faced professions.
What is present in the trailer is oodles of style, just as we've come to expect from Gearbox's projects. Check out the video above, then read our preview to find out exactly what Mad Moxxi's problem is. (We're guessing it has something to do with her being completely insane.)

;) It's ok.
I just think it's bad marketing on their part. They'll have to either release Secret Armory as a single retail disc, or re-release all 3 on a future retail disc. Either way, it just seems like an inefficient use of publishing resources.
Zombie island is good
I have been told mad moxxi's underdome is crap
Secret armoury is amazing, probably the second best DLC i have ever bought. I would advise you level up to 50 before getting it though as it is solid.
I can't believe I got rid of the game, it has been one of my biggest regrets when it comes to trading in games, Hopefully there will be a GOTY with all DLC :(

That would be great.
Unfortunately, from the news of this Zombie+Moxxi combo release, it doesn't look likely. >:(
I hope they're not doing a Fallout 3. Put all the dlc on disk except one, so anyone with no internet connection has to get the GOTY edition to play it.

That's what I did. Basically I spend the entire time on Zombie Island going after that achievement. I just happened to complete all of the other missions in the process. ;)
Now that the CD is out.... do I need the original game to play them?

You do need the original retail game. The add-on pack installs to your Hard Drive just like DLC, then you access the DLC by loading up the retail game disc.

DLC confirmed
2K has confirmed the next add-on pack for its first-person shooter and role-playing hybrid Borderlands.
The pack, titled 'Claptrap's New Robot Revolution', will require players to suppress a deadly Claptrap attack using the unique abilities of their chosen vault hunter.
The add-on takes place during a civil war between the Hyperion Corporation and the Claptraps, who are led by the cunning kung-fu Claptrap known only as Ninja Assassin.
The contents of this add-on were of course originally discovered when a player dug into the 1.3 PC patch and found details on new quests, weapons and characters.
The patch also hinted at the return of a number of other Borderland characters, while they will probably show up in this pack, it may be that more DLC is on the way.

Duke won't derail Borderlands plans
Gearbox has promised gamers that its plans for Borderlands downloadable content and sequels to other franchises remain intact despite the recent purchase of the Duke Nukem franchise.
At the end of September, a new DLC for Borderlands called Claptrap's New Robot Revolution launches on all platforms. On 12th October the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition will launch.
"We are fully committed to all of our projects," boss Randy Pitchford has told Eurogamer.
"At the Penny Arcade Expo where we first unveiled Duke Nukem Forever to the fans, Gearbox Software hosted a panel where I provided an update regarding all of the projects we are involved with.
"I think it was clear to everyone who attended that panel that Gearbox Software and I are very committed to our games and our brands."
Aside from Borderlands, Gearbox's other main property is the Brothers in Arms series. The last entry in that franchise was Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway back in September 2008
