Righty ho then,I just bought this (along with bioshock for £25 in Tesco-double pack),and was looking for any help/advice?
I thought I'd give i a go as a few of you have harped on about this for a while now and took the plunge.
So,any help? What's the best character to start with?
It doesnt rally matter with Oblivion the game kinda levels up with you. I was a dark elf but I really dont think it makes that much difference
Oblivion is a great game you should enjoy it :)
Bioshock is fantastic too....I still need to finish it
I've only played the game for a couple hours. It's the kind of game I need devote myself to, which has been impossible this year with all of the unwrapped games on my shelf and new games releasing.
But I can offer a couple words of wisdom.
1. Install the game to your HDD. Trust me. There are a couple spots in the game that can freeze, which may result in the loss of hours of work. My friend Slamurai learned that the hard way. Installing makes the game run much smoother and less likely to freeze. For the best results, do the following ...
- Insert the game disc in your 360 and start it up. This should prompt you to download a patch/update.
- Exit the game and return to your Dashboard.
- Install the game disc to your HDD.
- If you have the GOTY edition, remove the game disc and insert the 2nd disc to install the expansions.
- Now you're good to go.
2. Set the game's difficulty to the easiest/lowest setting. Difficulty has no affect on achievements, so cut yourself a break. ;)
3. I also chose to be a Dark/Blood Elf (whatever they're called). The ones with blue skin. I don't remember why, but I know I was very cautious about my decision when I made it. Keep in mind that each class/race has different strenghts and weaknesses, so choose one that suits your own play style.
Thanks guys,I'm a run and gun type,so that's me fu***d then!
I've owned Oblivion twice and could never get past the first 10 minutes, I'm just not in to sword and sorecery stuff. But having played and thoroughly enjoyed Fallout 3 and Fable 2 I'm wondering if I should try and give it another go? ???

Do it!
I may do, but I've so much else I want to get I'm not sure when I'll be able to afford to get it.

Same as me,but I saw this pack available and thought why not? I have played Bioshock before, but it was a borrowed copy and had to give it back and was always on my to buy list.
I might play Oblivion for 10 minutes like yourself and think this is either sh*t or I'll persivere with it.

JT, I was exactly the same. Played Oblivion for about an hour then never touched it. Then I played Fallout 3, loved it and once I'd finished it I went back to Oblivion and found it so much better, maybe cos I was more used to the controls.
Oblivion is the best game I have ever played. FACT!!! My character is a breton who start off as magic based. I'm sh*t with a sword but i don't need one as my magic is AWESOME.
Well,I've give it a go and to be honest, don't like it! I loved Fallout, but this just dosn't float my boat.Sorry!

If I can pick that pack with Bioshock up for less than £20 I might give it another go, but I'm not sure, having tried it twice before, whether I'll get very far with it.
damn you all to oblivion!!! ;)
Finished the Shivering Isles expansion last night and to be honest I was glad it was over. But then after 120 hours it was bound to get a bit stale! ;)

I played Oblivon for hours - but never really enjoyed it due to the level scalling system..
yeah the level system made the game so easy but then I wasnt wanting a challenge when I played it. I just relaxed and enjoyed the open world
TJ I noticed you didn't get one of the Duke/Duchess achievements in Shivering Isles. I got them both. :P

Well done you. ;) I didnt look at achievements back in those days. Maybe I will start again. Did you save it before you reached a decission? You had to chose either Duchess or Duke. I chose Duchess.

Yes I saved it and did both quests. Sad little score whore that I am. ;D

Easy? did we play the same game?? I hated the fact that every single thing had to be challenge. a goblin, a rat etc.
But again Its just my oppinion. I just kind like the idea that when I invest so many hours into a game - My character becomes stronger, better etc., and that never happened in Oblivion in my case. Then it all pretty soon seemed pointless
But I can understand why people who does not have this experience, likes this game.
Well I played it for a whole year non stop. I didnt feel the need to play any other games and I never died once so yeah it must have been easy as I am usually rubbish at games.
I loved the challenges and my charachter did become stronger and gain new skills.
Skills like being able to make potions out of one ingredient, repauring magic weapons and weapons by hand, becoming a great lock picker person,, better at persuation etc
Oblivion was everything I could ask for in an RPG.
The level system I found very easy. The monsters also didnt prove much of a challenge they seemed to be the same level than my charachter all the time. But like I said I played this game constantly every week night for 12 months.
I thhink I have well over 230 hours played. I didnt have xbox live then. I am not as commited to games anymore

TJ, did you turn down the difficulty setting? I had it on the default setting. I'd like to think I was half decent at combat but I still died quite a few times.
I cant quite remember to be honest but I probarbly did as I always start games on easy :D
So Red what your saying is that there is no way that I would have had it on default because your obviously waaaayyy better than me at games. I find your comments quite insulting :D :D ;)

Er, no, I was just making sure that my opinion that you are a gaming goddess was not false. :-[
Well then thats ok :P I wasnt being serious by the way
Neither was I! ;D
the default setting is quite a challenge but only in the beginning. once you have levelled up a few times it becomes easier. and if there are any monsters you just can't defeat that easily (Minotaur's for example) you can always take the difficulty down a notch or three on the difficulty slider. I thought the game was perfectly set so that newcomers and experienced players alike can enjoy the game and the levelling system was balanced perfectly. It is still, without doubt the best game i have ever played on any console ever. But then again i have yet to play fallout 3!

The problem I had at the beginning was choosing my main attributes. Having not played the game I didn't know what were the best ones. I chose some real sh*t that I barely levelled up, and in hindsight should have had Athletics and Restoration, which level up just by moving and healing, which I did a lot of.

From what i've played of it so far, i'd have to agree, but then i've only done a few quests, gonna have to play it properly at some point, a friend of mine has finished both this & Fallout 3 and thinks Oblivion sucks in comparison.
Well I still think its the best xbox game I have ever played.
I might have to get back into Oblivion, I quite liked it, Just a bit time consuming.

I agree Fallout 3 is better, but it was Fallout 3 that inspired me to get back into Oblivion.

I would definitely recommend settings the difficulty to the easiest setting, since difficulty does not affect achievements.
If anyone finds the game too easy, you can always adjust the difficulty settings mid-game.
I love Oblivion , think the best bit is listing to the wonderful Patrick Stewart speaking.
But an enjoy experience if you can get into it except for hearing Sean Bean.
Really should go buy the Game of Year Edition , so I can play Shivering Isles.

Fallout 3 is my fave 360 game.. before Fo3 it was Oblivion..
Truely great RPG games where you can "LIVE" inside the world and watch it change around you.. some epic storylines in Oblivion such as the dark brotherhood and the theifs guild. The arena is one thing to be admired too.
Fallout 3 lacks the depth of some of the Oblivion stuff (arena and guilds) but makes up for it in such exotic quests.. like the "Shoot em in the head" quest.. :)
On the topic of Shivering Isles its great.. easily worth whatever you pay for it.. I have ALL the oblivion DLC.. yes even the horse armor. :P though my main horse was always the brother hood free one :D that u could stuff with armor and stuff :D
i need to get shivering isles but i need to finish the main story first. i don't like playing it 'cos it's like a drug for me, once i have a taste i want more and more until before i know it 12 hours have elapsed!
