GamesCom 2009: Dante's Inferno Descends in February 2010

Are you ready to go to Hell?  Well, EA and critically acclaimed development studio Visceral Games (the master minds behind Dead Space) announced that you will be able to do so in February 2010.  North America will receive the game first on February 9, and Europe will have to wait an extra three days (just like Battlefield: Bad Company 2) and will hit store shelves across the continent on February 12.

For those of you that don't know, the game is based on part one of Dante Alighieri's epic poem "The Divine Comedy".  Players will take on the role of Dante as he travels through Alighieri's nine circles of Hell, which are limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery.  In doing this, Dante is driven to save the soul of his love Beatrice, who was dragged through the gates of Hell by Lucifer.

The game will also be backed be a comic book series, which will launch on December 9, 2009 and will span six issues.

February 2010

I don't know if you guys have noticed this, but Q1 of 2010 is going to be PACKED with game releases.  I wouldn't be surprised if we see some titles get pushed back even further to lessen the crowd.  I actually think this is a good thing for gaming in general.

Expected Q1 2010 Releases:
Alan Wake
Mass Effect 2
Scratch: DJ
MotoGP
Splinter Cell
Bad Company 2
Split/Second
Singularity
Max Payne 3
Darksiders
Aliens vs Predator
DDR
Bayonetta
BioShock 2
Dark Void

And that's just for the Xbox 360.  It also doesn't include other titles that are expected but not confirmed like Dead Rising 2.

Dante's Inferno draws fire for baby murder Achievement

Dante's Inferno is getting flak from a nanny group over an Achievement for killing unbaptized babies -- not ironically, it's named "Bad Nanny." As GamePolitics points out, the International Nanny Association (INA) released a statement calling the 'cheevo "offensive to our association," as it seemingly defies the INA's goal to "promote and educate the public regarding the selfless work nannies do to support families."

We here at Joystiq are thoroughly offended too, though mostly because we know that more than one person on staff will be once again be forced into a morally compromising position in the endless hunt for virtual grandeur.

Dante's Inferno demo burning up Xbox 360 and PS3 next month

Though Visceral Games' video game adaptation of the classic parable known as Dante's Inferno (which, fun fact, was actually a book adaptation of Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey) won't see the light of day until next February, we'll be getting our dirty, sin-soaked hands on a demo for the game in December. In 'The Gates of Hell,' players will be able to traverse the entire first level of the game, taking them from the surface world to the titular portcullis, where they must battle (and presumably kill) Death himself.

We imagine the game gets much easier after, you know, there's no more Death.

Dante's Inferno demo on PSN Dec. 10, XBLM Dec. 24

There are plenty of beloved Christmas Eve traditions observed across the globe. Whether it's roasting chestnuts or watching the Christmas Story marathon, everyone's got a different way of marking the arrival of St. Nick. EA's hoping that the 360 owners among you will start a brand new, equally-sentimental tradition as it releases a demo of Dante's Inferno for XBLM on Dec. 24. The sample includes the entire first level of Dante's demonic journey into hell and goes great with eggnog.

Those preferring PSN will get the demo on Dec. 10, a date which has the dual benefit of (1) being two weeks earlier and (2) not making the baby Jesus cry.

Europe getting Dante's Inferno 'Death Edition,' includes playable Isaac Clarke

In an inspiring attempt to try and take even more gratuitous liberties with the works of Dante Alighieri, Visceral Games has announced a Europe-only special edition bundle of its upcoming Hell-based action title, Dante's Inferno. The "Death Edition" bundle comes with a copy of the poem, some making-of documentaries, and an art book. However, its greatest bonus is a new skin for the game's scythe-wielding protagonist: The slot-helmeted outfit of Dead Space's hero, Isaac Clarke.

Now that we think of it, there's something pretty similar to this cross-promotion in the text of Dante's epic poem:

"I saw multitudes
to every side of me; their howls were loud
while, wheeling weights, they used their chests to push.
They struck against each other; at that point,
this space miner came in and killed them with this big scythe.
Needless to say, it was pretty fucking radical
."

Dante's Inferno producer hopes for sequel, despite challenges

Would it be possible to use Dante Alighieri's spinning corpse in oil derricks, as as a sort of fleshy drill, or perhaps to power a large centrifuge? That might be a real opportunity if Dante's Inferno executive producer Jonathan Knight gets to make a follow-up to his forthcoming adaptation, a hope he elaborated on for G4.

There's a hitch though: While Knight knows that EA will want a sequel to the game if it performs well, he's not sure that the follow up in The Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, will lend itself as well to a game.

... So Visceral can turn one of the great literary works into a game about a scythe-wielding maniac fighting nipple-born monsters, but making a game about the seven-layer Mount of Purgatory that ends in Earthly Paradise is beyond it? Really?

For the sequel, just have hell / purgatory invade Earth to reclaim whatever Dante took at the end of the first game.  Dante (or possibly his descendant if Dante ends up dying in the end of the first) is the only one that can lead Earth's forces to defend against a demonic army set out to destroy humanity.

The damn thing practically writes itself.  Just read / watch any demonic apocalypse story.

[bonus]  If Dante does die at the end of the first, have Dante and his heavenly army come in at the end of the sequel just when things seem hopeless for mankind.  Feelgood game of the year.

'In Dante's Inferno, players assume the role of Dante as he travels on an epic descent through Dante Alighieri's nine circles of Hell – limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery. Players assume the role of Dante, who descends into Hell after returning home to find his beloved Beatrice murdered, with Lucifer seducing her soul into the underworld. His mission is to save Beatrice, but he soon realizes he is also in Hell to face his own demons and ultimately to redeem himself.
To take down the demons of Hell, Dante is outfitted with two primary weapons: the Scythe he takes from Death and the Holy Cross given to him by Beatrice, which has spiritual powers that will help Dante collect souls and spells from the creatures he defeats on his journey. The game also features a deep upgrade system so gamers can customize their abilities to their specific gameplay style. Each circle showcases its own distinct look, with demons, monsters, damned and geography that are crafted straight from the poem's vivid descriptions

An Epic Adaptation of a Classic -- Based on part one of Dante Alighieri's classic poem "The Divine Comedy," Dante's Inferno is a 3rd person action adventure game that takes Dante on an epic journey through Hell as he seeks to rescue the soul of his beloved Beatrice. The Nine Circles of Hell -- Just like the poem, players will descend through Dante's unique nine circles of Hell: limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery. Each circle features distinct environments, enemies and story elements befitting the sins committed by their inhabitants. Control the Beasts of Hell -- Dante's Inferno features large scale beasts and bosses, some of which Dante will be able to fully tame, utilizing them to throw back Hell's wrath to its minions. Fast, Addictive, Responsive Combat -- Dante fights through the nine circles armed with Death's Scythe and Beatrice's Holy Cross, with magic powers and a deep, customizable upgrade system helping the player take full advantage of a fast and fluid gameplay experience that will never run at lower than 60 frames per second. Visceral Games Stamp of Approval -- From the award-winning studio that created the critically-acclaimed Dead Space. Be Righteous or Unholy -- choose to punish or absolve the damned, affecting your character's abilities throughout the game.

Report: EA buys Super Bowl ad time for Dante's Inferno

Because the Dante's Inferno marketing department obviously knows what it's doing, IndustryGamers reports that EA bought up some ad time during next month's Super Bowl, presumably in the hopes that some of the people watching will care enough to pick up the game when it's releases two days later. We have to wonder how many of these sports-watching people -- who are ostensibly not as interested in 14th century epic poetry -- will care about a guy with a self-inflicted sewing nightmare on his chest waging war through Hell.

So, here's ample warning. When your parents inevitably drag you over to your uncle's house to watch the San Bernardino Flim-Flams take on the Texarkana Whatsits, and your little cousin -- you know, the one way too into Dashboard Confessional with the closet full of long-sleeve shirts with thumb holes cut out -- sees the ad and goes bananas, know that Joystiq gave you the heads up. We love you like that.

Visceral Games prepping DLC for Dante's Inferno

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Dante's Inferno executive producer Jonathan Knight responded curiously to a query about the possibility of upcoming adaptations of the other two installments in the Divine Comedy, Purgatorio and Paradiso. According to the Times, "Knight said his team was focused on the release of Dante's Inferno as well as on additional downloadable content for that game," though he later confessed "I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about that."

We think Visceral's missing out on a great chance to kill two birds with one stone -- why not make Purgatorio and Paradiso DLC packs for Inferno? For instance, a few months after the game comes out, release a patch that makes the game's load times last for 49 days. Boom. Purgatorio in the bag.

Update: As awesome as that sounds, it's more likely he was talking about the "Dark Forest" prequel DLC that will come bundled with the Limited Edition version of the game on PS3. We're still going to hold out hope, though!
