Visceral Games has revealed that a sequel to science fiction action game Dead Space is currently in development.
According to a job posting by the studio on business social networking site Linked In, the Xbox 360 and PS3 sequel is now reaching the "later stages of pre-production" and will move into full production in the next few months.
The lead combat designer vacancy claimed that the "M-rated action/shooter sequel will set new standards for an action-packed, story-driven console experience".
Visceral also stressed that it owns "complete autonomy and creative control" over the development and that publisher Electronic Arts is "100% committed" to the IP.
Another unscary survival horror game, sweet :)
Can't wait, loved the first one. Made me do a little poo more than a few times.
I've owned Dead Space for probably a year, but haven't played it.
I did however let a friend borrow it, and watched him play it for a while. I'm definitely a fan of this game, and love the partnership between EA and Visceral. Some of the "developer diaries" for Dead Space 1 really helped change my view of EA in general.
I've got the original, played it for about an hour, too scared to go back to it!!! :-[
the first hour is the scariest, eventually you get to the point where your just expecting to be attacked all the time, everytime you open a door or push a switch, adds to the suspense when you push a switch and nothing happens ......... yet!
i needed a new game to play while i wait for borderlands to be released and saw it for like $25, so i picked it up. im only on the second level and had a few moments that made me jump, not too scary though. unlike condemned 2, those damn mannequins almost made me piss myself. what was my point??? oh yeah, its pretty fun and worth the $25
Dead Space 2 to have online multiplayer?
A new job advert has kicked off speculation that the next Dead Space game could feature an online multiplayer mode.
The ad is for a senior online level designer at EA Redwood, to work on "the Dead Space franchise on Xbox 360 and PS3". The successful candidate will "work collaboratively with creative director and online producer to create extremely fun, satisfying and polished multiplayer levels".
He or she will also "drive online design by taking the initiative to bring all parties together to execute on the overall vision for the levels".
Apparently, "The previous instalment in the Dead Space franchise received numerous awards for gameplay, visuals, and sound design, and the same core team is in place to create an even better follow up," the ad reads.
"The game is in the later stages of pre-production, ready for production in the next few months, with many of the navigational and combat mechanics in place."
EA has yet to officially announce Dead Space 2 but it's not the first time we've heard a sequel is on the way - a similar job listing was posted back in September.
Dead Space 2 Teaser Image Released
(http://www.cinemablend.com/images/sections/21509/21509.jpg)
EA rolled out a new Twitter account (http://twitter.com/DeadSpace) for the Dead Space franchise. To mark the occasion, they've released what looks to be the first teaser image for Dead Space 2.
Alright, it's an ink blot so by nature it's open to interpretation. Look at the top of the picture, though, at 11 and 1 o'clock (full image below). It looks sort of like a pair of Necromorphs. Specifically, you can make out their long, angular arms with spikes on the ends.
There's a bunch of strange symbols at the bottom as well. It seems to be that code that Unitologists (the crazy cult from the first Dead Space) used. A sample photo of the Unitology script can be found in the image gallery below for comparison purposes.
The rumor is that Dead Space 2 will be released in 2010. There's also been some talk of it having multiplayer. As the release of the random ink blot image indicates, though, EA's not quite ready to start confirming stuff.
maybe the picture can be folded to make something scarifying

EA makes Dead Space 2 official
EA has announced Dead Space 2 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, but hasn't said when it's due out or whether it includes multiplayer.
All we know of the sequel is that Visceral Games will once more develop and hero Isaac Clarke will return. This time, however, he'll have new tools to "slice and dismember" with as he takes the fight to the Necromorph menace. He's gone all Sigourney Weaver, it sounds like.
News of a second Dead Space game has been doing the rounds for months, and we've heard that there's a third instalment planned too.
Dead Space was a third-person survival-horror game that followed mechanic Isaac Clarke as he chased down a distress call made by the spaceship Ishimura. Turns out there were nasty aliens on board.

Here's the first proper image from the much-anticipated Dead Space 2, showing off what looks like a slick new suit for the game's lead character, Isaac Clarke.
As you can see, the image was part of a teaser for Game Informer magazine's upcoming, and much hyped, preview (via NeoGAF) of the horror sequel, which EA made official yesterday.

Dead Space 2 to get multiplayer?
Is that a good or a bad thing?
A job ad has revealed that EA is looking for a "Senior Online Level Designer" for the series on 360 and PS3 platforms.

Dead Space 2: Multiplayer, Bigger World, Space-Floating
That Dead Space 2 issue of Game Informer has hit people's mailboxes, and it's full of proper details on the game. Like the fact Isaac will now speak. Let us all take a look, yes?
First up, the game is set on a space station called "Sprawl", built upon the husk of one of Saturn's moons. It's big; a lot bigger than the Ishimura, and has whole themed wings, like residential quarters, public spaces, etc.
In terms of gameplay changes, you can now not only walk and jump around in zero-G, but fly/float as well, and you're able to shoot your weapons throughout.
Oh, and there'll be multiplayer. No real details on that, but really, you had to expect it.
That's the general gist of things. You want more the really fine details, you could always grab a copy of the mag.
Latest Game Informer Reveals a Ton of Dead Space 2 Info
n this month's edition of Game Informer, Visceral Games' follow-up to the hugely popular Dead Space is the magazine's cover story.
The piece inside covers a ton of information about the new setting, what Visceral have done improvement-wise and there's even a mention of that multiplayer you knew was coming.
A summary of the key points are as follows:
* The story takes place 3 years after the original on a populated space station, the Sprawl. It is massive compared to the Ishimura and you'll visit shopping malls, schools and churches.
* You'll get to watch the outbreak first hand this time.
* Isaac can now talk and will be investigated more as a character.
* There will be much more suit customisation this time around with more upgrades.
* Visceral plan to make the game scarier with a better pacing. They want to create more genuine scares, not just jumpy moments.
* They also plan to make more "epic" moments in the game.
* The game will feature more intuitive and interesting mission design, not just go here, fetch this, fetch that.
* Zero Gravity has been given a revamp.
* Enemy AI is improved. More like a cat-and-mouse game, rather than a monsters-in-the-closet approach this time. There are new enemy types also.
* There are new weapons. Plasma cutter's not been weakened, the others have just been strengthened.
* Controls have been refined. Isaac is now quicker, but he's still a human after all.
* Multiplayer: "All I can say is it's really fun, and you'll get to strategically dismember your friends."
Lots of interesting tid-bits there, especially the multiplayer quote at the end..."dismember your friends"? I've always wanted to be a Necromorph and get my limbs severed off by my closest pals.
I'll be getting the Dead Space Downfall dvd from Lovefilm in the next few days, seeing as it's a prequel to the original scare-free game i'll do a review once i've watched it, let you know what I think, it will be my first review on the forums :)
Dead Space 2 Interview
EA's monster sequel unvieled
One of 2008's very best games, Dead Space, has a sequel - and we can't bloody wait to play it.
Set years after the original, Dead Space 2 sees protagonist Isaac Clarke once again trapped in an alien nightmare as the Necromorph infection reaches a sprawling human city, the 'Sprawl', on the rings of Saturn.
More scares, Zero G and destructable environments - including the ability to smash windows sending enemies and scenary ejecting into space - are promised, as well as the controversial additions of more action, a voice for Isaac and yes - multiplayer.
The development team at Visceral Games were kind enough to answer some of our questions ahead of the sequel's official reveal, and finally we can now share with you thier answers.
For the full reveal of Dead Space 2 and the first ever screenshots pick up Official PlayStation Magazine and Xbox World 360 magazine, both of which are on sale now. And if you can't be arse to walk to the shops buy them both online.
How is Dead Space 2's space station any different from the giant Ishimura? And why Isaac Clarke again? Isn't he dead?
Ian Milham, Art Director: While the Ishimura was all built by one company and had one feeling, the Sprawl is a whole city in space, built over time by different people. It has rich areas, poor areas, apartment blocks and commercial centers, schools and churches. The Sprawl lets us have a lot more diversity in our settings and themes. Isaac Clarke is back because his story has a lot more to be told, and his experiences in the original game will directly affect what happens in Dead Space 2. He's very much not dead, although he may wish he was.
NPC's, a talking protagonist... how are you going to keep Dead Space 2 as scary as the original now that you're not just a quiet man trapped alone on an alien-infested hell ship?
John Calhoun, Senior Designer: When we made Dead Space 1, we learned a lot about horror and atmosphere; specifically, what works, and what doesn't. We're dialing up the ideas that worked best, and developing a bunch of new tricks to keep you at the edge of your seat. (For example, your next trip to the doctor will never be the same...) The idea of having Isaac talk, and giving him a cast of characters to interact with, are features that were proposed by the same group responsible for our horror moments! They're a smart bunch, so Isaac's change from a silent anyman to a more capable hero is actually being done to support the scares and tension that Dead Space is known for.
Visceral heads Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey left the studio this year. Should be worried that the sequel's quality might suffer as a result?
Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer: It takes a lot more than 2 people to make a great game. The entire team did a tremendous job on the original. We are fortunate to have the majority of those folks back on the sequel. I think the work that is happening now is fantastic and surpasses what we did on the original. We are not being held back at all on Dead Space 2 and hopefully people will see that when they get to see more of the game.
Dead Space 2 is being described as having a lot more "action" moments than the original. You're not pulling a Resident Evil 5 on us, are you?
Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer: Dead Space 2 will retain the survival horror elements from the original game and infuse more moments of empowerment. An easy way to describe it is you will have moments where you are capable of blasting the sh*t out of the Necromorphs.
Some of our new set ups and enemies allow for more action oriented combat but to be clear the same building tension will remain. It will be interspersed with some action sequences but by no means is the new game a straight up action game.
Destructable environments and impaling weapons are the big new systems in the follow-up. Do these have as big an impact on gameplay as the original's dismemberment and if so, how?
Wright Bagwell, Creative Director: Destructible environments accomplish a few things:
First, it's odd when the interactive fidelity of game worlds doesn't match their visual fidelity, and we're trying to make sure they match up as much as possible. In a game where you can use telekinesis to manipulate objects, it's frustrating to see something that looks movable but isn't.
Second, some of the destructible items in the world will break into pieces that are useful in combat. These pieces can be used to inflict damage on enemies, and in some cases, can be used to impale enemies. So, resourceful players will be able to impale enemies by using debris in the world even if they don't have the Javelin gun. Some enemies (like the Slashers, for example) have dismemberable limbs that can be TKed and used to impale enemies.
Finally, combat looks and feels WAY more spectacular in a dynamic world, and makes combat feel more dangerous and satisfying. Exploders send debris flying, the force gun pushes debris around in spectacular fashion, and some other new, not yet revealed enemies and weapons also create a spectacle of destruction.
Fans of the original loved the brilliant, but few zero gravity sections. The new "decompression moments" look awesome. In what other ways are you keeping zero g sections impressive in Dead Space 2?
Wright Bagwell, Creative Director: We're not giving a lot of details about Zero-G right now but will be happy to discuss more details when I can.
Talking of Resident Evil 5, did you take any influence from the public's reaction to that? It wasn't as openly loved as its predecessor...
Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer: The team is avid gamers and certainly looked at RE5. As far as taking influence from that game I don't think you will see too many similarities. My personal favorites in that series were RE1 and RE4.
A lot of fans will argue that online multiplayer is an unnecessary addition to the brilliantly isolated and lonely scares of the single-player game. Why did you decide to add it anyway?
Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer: We are not really discussing MP today. What I will say is we have a dedicated team working on the feature, are actively focus testing it, and will not ship a mode that degrades the quality of Dead Space 2 or the Dead Space franchise.
Can you give us any solid details on what multiplayer will be like? Early reports sound like Left 4 Dead in space... with playable necromorphs?
Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer: You will be able to strategically dismember your friends. I'd be happy to talk more about it in the future though.
Finally, you've set yourself a pretty huge bar with the excellent original Dead Space. How determined are you to top it, and does that mean EA will delay and work on the sequel until you deem it good enough?
Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer: As I mentioned we are focused 100% on quality and making a great sequel to the original Dead Space. The company is completely behind our team and Visceral Games. The game will ship when it is ready and meets with the teams and Visceral Games high quality standards.
I'd like to say thank you to all of the gamers who supported the original Dead Space, Dead Space Extraction, Dante's Inferno, and Visceral Games.
Visceral teases us with Dead Space 2 '3D' screenshot
(http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/12/deadspace23dimage.jpg)
It was hinted at again and again... and again, until it was finally confirmed. Dead Space 2 is officially a thing that exists, and the sequel will land on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC at some point. Until then, EA's Visceral Games is in full-blown tease mode. Today's tidbit of Dead Space 2 info comes in the form of a Game Informer-exclusive "3D" screenshot.
The image features the game's hero, Isaac Clark, fighting off a horrific childlike necromorph. Well, to be honest, we assume the pair are fighting. For all we know the two characters could be moments away from a beautiful holiday embrace. (Mistletoe may or may not be involved.) Check out Game Informer's dedicated Dead Space 2 site (http://gameinformer.com/p/deadspace3d.aspx) to see the shot in all its interactive glory.
EA wants your ideas for Dead Space 2
Now's your chance to determine what will be included with the Collector's Edition...
EA has asked on its Dead Space 2 Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/deadspace/posts/251420297621) for ideas on what Dead Space 2's Collector's Edition should contain.
"IF we were to put out a Dead Space 2 Collector's Edition, what would you want to see in it?" shouts the announcement. "I will have our Executive Producer Steve Papoutsis comment on some of your suggestions next week, so make them good!"
So far suggestions include plasma cutter, helmet, keychain and, we quote, "a special weapon that should be crazy or do somthing so out their it makes people go omgwtflol".
Get in there and make your own suggestions. As long as it's not 'free making of DVD', anything should be game.
For those of you who loved Dead Space, for it's ability to scare the living day lights out of you, you're in for a surprise. It looks like the producer of Dead Space 2, Steve Papoutsis, does not feel the same way.
In a recent interview with GameInformer Steve is quoted as saying that ".. What we discovered is people were – believe it or not – too scared 'of' playing Dead Space". Was this really an issue? Perhaps the producer doesn't realize that we picked up Dead Space to be scared in the first place. If anyone is purchasing the first game not expecting to be scared, then perhaps they mis-understood what type of genre this game belonged to and what they were getting into.
Perhaps the team for Dead Space 2 should consider this carefully before they change elements in the series that would otherwise ruin what could be a great franchise.

See that little greenish pic up there? Well thats something Visceral wants us all to spend days trying to solve. Over the next 2 weeks they will continue to further reveal just what that tiny little pic is showing. All we have so far is that that may be Mr. Clark in the middle surrounded by green necromorph snot. Maybe Issac is inside a big baddies nasal cavity. Only time will tell. So keep an eye on Dead Space 2's official Facebook page.

Dead Space 2 will be more action than horror
It's the videogame equivalent of Alien to Aliens as Visceral cranks up the action.
Dead Space 2 will focus on action over horror compared to its predecessor, says developer Visceral Games.
"We've got two main teams; we've got some supporting content for Dante's Inferno coming out, but we'll mostly shift our attention to Dead Space 2," Visceral senior VP Nick Earl tells Industry Gamers.
"The first one was well received, and we want to take advantage of that start with something that has tremendously wide appeal.
"We're more focused on the action than the horror this time. We're more empowering to the player. We've got a lot of feature innovation and we feel comfortable because we have something with resonance and we have something that's so capable.
He added: "I've heard some people say that Dead Space was the most "un-EA game" they had seen, and they meant it as a compliment! Funny anecdote, when [EA CEO] John [Riccitiello] in his position several years ago and was touring the studio, he said he wanted a horror game. He went away and when it came back, he helped support and finally realize that game in Dead Space."
The original Dead Space was well received mostly because its horror elements were well executed, and it struck a nice balance between that and the action. We'll be interested to hear how an action-focused sequel will be received but we think we can guess...
How can you have less horror if there was no horror in the first place? ;D

Either way, you won't be scared playing Dead Space, I guarantee it.

Dead Space 2 contest calls for creative dismembermentsThose of us who have played the first Dead Space can probably agree that there were some bitchin' dismemberments throughout Isaac Clarke's journey to disengage the U.S.S. Ishimura's parking brake or whatever. But Visceral Games is looking to get creative with the sequel, so, the studio is tapping you, "Mr. John Q. Public" or perhaps "Ms. Jane Doe," to come up with some unique limb detachment techniques for Dead Space 2.
You can submit your idea (http://www.facebook.com/deadspace?v=app_4949752878) in one of three forms: through a written description; by snapping a picture; or by submitting a video -- up until March 26, when the entry period ends. Finalists will then have their ideas rated by the community, with the winner being revealed on April 20. Said winner will get face-mapped into the game, only to be dismembered by a Necromorph. We're not really sure we'd want to see our own death -- in a video game or some lame movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v4osKSQrrk), but there it is.
If you're looking for more info, head past the break for a video explaing how you can get involved.
Dead Space 2 thrusts gameplay footage at PAX audiencesDead Space 2 producer Steve Papoutsis promised that Visceral's survival horror sequel would have a greater emphasis on action. Well, they weren't kidding. At their live-streamed PAX panel, the Visceral team showed off thirty seconds of footage of the upcoming game, and "action-packed" would be a pretty appropriate way of describing it.
The blurry off-screen footage captured from the show's Ustream may not be the best look at the quality of Dead Space 2's graphics, but it gives a good idea of what to expect from Issac Clark's new adventure. Rushing through a moving train, Issac can be seen activating a jet pack in a scene that looks like it should be from
Dark Void The Rocketeer.
Dead Space 2 trailer leaked, then pulled (... so that's what Isaac looks like)
Joystiq readers know we're fond of one Ms. Lexine Murdoch, or, as she's known around these parts, Dead Space Girl. Well, we'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to Mr. Isaac Clarke, the oft-masked engineer (and protagonist) from the first title. While you may think this is the first time you're actually laying eyes on the mysterious Mr. Clarke, we'd like to direct your attention to this video from the 2008 original. While Isaac looks a little worse for wear after the harrowing ordeal aboard the USG Ishimura, we're glad to see he hasn't lost his trademark sense of humor ...
The image comes from the first trailer for Dead Space 2, apparently called "Dementia" according to Scrambled Pixel, who somehow tracked the video down early. We say "early" since we're assuming this was the treat intended to be released tomorrow, on 4/29/10, the date coded into the Rorschach inkblot we received earlier this week. Oh, also because it's now been pulled from YouTube "due to a copyright claim by EA."
Don't worry though, we remember everything! It had the usual Dead Space fare: Necromorphs, Necromorphs vomiting, the Marker, crazy alien runes, and the above reveal (but not really!) of happy-go-lucky space miner Isaac's face. On second thought, you should probably just stop back tomorrow.
I'll reserve judgement until I play it, but ...
I think the mystery behind characters like Master Chief and Isaac in Dead Space 1 adds to the player immersion experience. When you leave a lot of questions (like 'What do they look like?') in the player's mind, it gives a sort of freedom to add your own traits and relate more with the character.
In Dead Space 2, I hope Isaac is as interesting as everyone imagined he is. 8)

Condemned is great. The first one was fantastic as a sort of psychological thriller type of game, but then in the 3rd Act it got all supernatural, which was weird.
Condemned 2 was a little better since it started off with the supernatural vibe, instead of shuvving down your throat at the last minute. However, I still think the franchise would have been better if they would had just stuck with the more realistic approach.

Dead Space 2 prequel confirmed for PSN & XBLA
Interactive comic will fill in the blanks
EA has announced that a Dead Space 2 comic titled Dead Space 2: Ignition will be released this autumn for XBLA and PSN.
EA teased a 'big announcement' (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=254747) yesterday and released an image featuring a hidden hint. Looks like this is is, folks...
Although most speculated it would related to multiplayer it turns out the announcement is for this choose-your-own adventure comic.
The game will feature a story with multiple paths and unlocks that will carry over into Dead Space 2.
Who's going to download this one, then?
sounds good, i really enjoyed the Dead Space 1 prequel XBL Comics, so interactive ones with unlocks that carry over to Dead Space 2 and Achievements. Will be getting this along with Dead Space 2.

Ditto.
Most likely a rental for me, or maybe wait until I see a decent sale price, I enjoyed the first game but I don't mind waiting a while before I play the sequel.
Dead Space 2 multiplayer details emerge
New information regarding the online multiplayer mode in Dead Space 2 is flying about the internet.
According to Gamernode, it emerged during a GameStop conference in San Antonio, Texas.
Apparently EA revealed you'll be able to control the Necromorphs in deathmatch-style battles against regular "soldiers" - and vice versa. More multiplayer characters will be announced in the future.
Anyone pre-ordering the game will get downloadable add-on Dead Space: Ignition into the bargain. Those pre-ordering from GameStop will also get a free rivet gun.
Dead Space 2 will arrive on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 28th January.

Just ignore the MP like the majority of BioShock 2 players did and you'll be fine. :)
don't be rational about this, i've just threw my life size cutout of isaac in the canal :-X

That sounds far scarier than the entire first game. :D
Dead Space 2 multiplayer revealed in videoWorld's first footage of Dead Space 2's elusive multiplayer modeAs previously teased, EA has finally lifted the lid on Dead Space 2's multiplayer mode via the below video, giving you a good look at actual gameplay footage.
It looks like a co-op affair that works similarly to Left 4 Dead's multiplayer Versus mode, pitching a team of four players against human-controlled beasts.
Take a look and see what you can make out:

My plan exactly.
I'll play DS2's MP for 5 minutes and go back to the SP like I did with BioShock 2.
tis too late now, Isaac has been in the canal for weeks, he's all soggy now. I'll rent this if the reviews are as good as the first games.
Dead Space 2 demo for Christmas?
You may well be in for a treat this Christmas - EA has dropped an exaggerated hint that a Dead Space 2 demo is on its way.
"Can a demo be released as a Christmas gift for us all?" executive producer Steve Papoutsis was asked in a Q&A video on the game's Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=472024944243&oid=18523496658&comments).
"A lot of people are asking that question. Gonna have to do some thinking about that," he said, inhaling dramatically through clenched teeth.
"But I would say stay on your toes, stick on the Facebook page and [wink, cluck] you never know."
No other hints were dropped.
Dead Space 2 is due out at the end of January. Judging by Papoutsis' earlier comments in that video, Dead Space 2 is finished and people have played it through - and it's taken them longer to finish than Dead Space 1. And remember, Dead Space 2 also has multiplayer.
Dead Space 2 takes place on gigantic space station Scrawl, which has been overrun by the hideous Necromorph monsters - the same ones Isaac Clarke came across on abandoned mining vessel Ishimura in Dead Space 1. Logically, then, the people in charge of Scrawl have looked up Isaac's number in the phone book and roped him into sorting out their mess in Dead Space 2.
hahah!!!! super hyped, even the MP can't detract me from the love i hold for this game!!

A commute from hell
The public transport system on the Ishimura in the original Dead Space was actually the safest place on the ship, with Isaac returning at the end of each chapter to move on to the next. In the sequel, Visceral has made Isaac's trips around the Sprawl a lot less relaxing.
Things start feeling uneasy early in the game as you enter the station and a burning train screeches past, flames reaching out of the windows as if trying to grab hold of Isaac. What follows is a set piece which demonstrate just how much Dead Space 2 has improved over the original.
A hacking minigame greets you as you step onto a train. It's pretty simple stuff but it's an inoffensive addition to the gameplay that doesn't outstay its welcome.
Once the train starts Isaac has to make his way through to the front, but enemies are pouring in through the windows. It would also be a lot easier if the train wasn't missing a carriage. But then we wouldn't get to play with Isaac's new action suit as he flies between carriages of a speeding train while necromorphs pile out of the door to grab him out of the air.
It's an exciting scene and one that only improves as Isaac reaches the next car only to find the train crashing and falling down a tunnel. Unable to stand up he slides down through the carriages and the game plays out almost like an on-rails shooter, with enemies clawing from all sides.
That is until he reaches the end of the train which has crashed through the ceiling into a room that is soon to be full of necromorphs. Hanging upside-down from an open door, unable to free himself, you're tasked in killing the oncoming necromorphs whilst gently swinging back and forth, which obviously has a detrimental effect on your aim.
The set piece culminates in Isaac managing to free himself and escaping from the train just as it crashes into the floor. Phew.
Nothing in the original Dead Space stands out in our mind as such a memorable set piece. If the game continues to throw these chunks of variety at us, whilst maintaining the original's excellent survival horror stalking and combat, we should be on to a winner.
There are also plenty of other tweaks throughout the game. Visceral Games hasn't messed too much with the formula. Instead the developers have improved, refined and expanded on bits and pieces here and there.
Replaying the game is encouraged with monsters jumping out of different doors in different playthroughs and locked supply rooms holding random items.
Isaac's melee attack, the foot stomp, is faster and more precise and his visor now casts a satisfying blue glow, which only adds to the creepy atmosphere when the lights dip and all you can hear is the clatter of approaching necromorphs.
With Dead Space 2 set on a living space station instead of the dead husk of a mining colony, it's easy to see that Visceral has taken inspiration from Bioshock. Some sections of the Sprawl feel very much like Rapture. Especially when demon babies start climbing out of the walls.
One of Dead Space's innovations, the navigation beam, has also been improved. Hold down the right analogue stick and you can decide whether the beam points towards your next objective, the nearest save point, the closest workbench or a shop. A simple update but a very welcome one nonetheless.
With the change in setting (this time we're present to witness the necromorphs' invasion from the outset), the gameplay improvements and, of course, Isaac's new found voice, Dead Space 2 shouldn't have a problem being an even better game than the original.
For a full review of Dead Space 2, you'll want to check out issue 69 of OXM, which will hit shelves on January 14.
amg! i've messed my pants just thinking how awesome this game is gonna be
I'd love to get excited about this game, But the fact that I have Dead Space 1 sitting staring at me, Waiting for me to finish, Means Dead Space 2 will have to wait in line. (an ever increasing line at that).

The first game is pretty short, you should breeze through it in a two or three nights, quality game too. :)

I'm actually somewhat on the fence regarding the direction of this game, hoping the MP doesn't detract from what the single-player was in the first game.

I'm officially no longer on the fence here... just played the demo and...holy hell this is going to be another kickin' ride! The clausterphobic atmosphere is back in full force, zero G's been definitely improved, still not sure if I'm good with Isaac speaking or his face being shown more so this time around (I always thought a faceless, speechless Isaac made for a more creepy experience). But either way, looks like Dead Space 2 has retained much of what was good about the first game and improved on various mechanics.
I'm gonna blast the demo later, can't wait to try another scare free survival horror game!
Dead Space 2 review: 9/10 in OXM UK
EA sequel is officially good
(http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/screenshot_243912.jpg)
The latest Dead Space 2 review is in, and it's another fantastic score in Official Xbox Magazine UK.
The mag's latest issue awards the "brave and remarkable" Visceral Games sequel 9/10, praising its "superb necromorphs and weapons", "commendably snarky script" and higher intensity.
The only downside is a sadly "non-essential" multiplayer mode, it says.
OXM's score is the latest in a growing line of praise for Dead Space 2, alongside PSM3's 92% Dead Space 2 review and the US version of OXM's 9.5 Dead Space 2 review.
Dead Space 2 is released on 360, PS3 and PC on January 25 in the US and three days later in Europe.
wow, seems i missed out big time on the first game. I didn't really give the first game's demo a proper chance and i am now thinking i should go pick the first one up cheap, crak recommended bioshock to me and i love that so far, maybe it will be the same with dead space. If not i can always get the money back - off crak of course.
I recommend Dead Space mate, tis a damn fine game.
Glad to hear it has 'non-essential multiplayer' as i wasn't gonna bother with it much.

Survey says: Good call - Dead Space was definitely a worthwhile time.
It may not be all out 'scare-fest' but its creepy atmosphere definitely makes it worth the price of admission (especially now). If you're into Bioshock, Dead Space will most likely hook you in also -albeit for different reasons. Just gotta turn the sound up... ;)
i got dead space 2 thinking im SO ready for this...

Dead Space 2 review scores sneak out
Top marks from US press
With EA's Dead Space 2 just a few days away from European release, the first batch of reviews have made their way onto the internet.
Here's what the US press thinks of Visceral Games' second third-person frightfest....
First up are our US cousins at Games Radar (http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/dead-space-2/review/dead-space-2-review/a-20110124182357829088/g-2009120710819530061), which gave the game 9/10, claiming it keeps "almost everything that made the original great while taking suitable steps to amp up the fun".
According to the review "Dead Space 2 will please both the series' fans and those just starting with this haunting adventure."
Giant Bomb (http://www.giantbomb.com/dead-space-2/61-25444/reviews/) awarded Dead Space 2 5/5 stars, calling it a "damn fine horror-action game". Its reviewer states that although "Dead Space 2 doesn't do anything especially new" it "does everything exceedingly well".
Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/25/dead-space-2-review/) opened its review by succinctly describing Dead Space 2 as "an action title that rarely slowed long enough" let the reviewer "soak in the atmosphere or take stock of the horrors" but the few occasions it did "are genuinely creepy".
Speaking about Sprawl, the game's new setting, the Joystiq reviewer describes it as a place that "feels much more lived in than the Ishimura" which ultimately "helps to ratchet up the fear".
IGN (http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/114/1145296p1.html) labels Dead Space 2 as the "new gold standard" for survival horror games.
The game seems to have struck a chord with IGN, which says it is more than just another action game, and is more importantly a "really personal story about a guy who has been seriously scarred by the events around him".
Multiplayer doesn't go down as well as hoped, and according to the review "isn't that interesting".
GameTrailers (http://www.gametrailers.com/gamereview.php?id=12830) also awarded Dead Space 2 9/10. Although it feels "very familiar" at first, it quickly becomes "one of those rare games that just keeps getting better" with "moments that stick with you for quite some time," it says.
"Multiplayer is a disappointment" but overall it is an "accessible game that won't leave fans in a lurch," it adds.
The folks at 1UP (http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3183117) have given the game an A-, saying that Dead Space 2 has "a pretty spectacular opening, a memorably over-the-top ending, and a flurry of crazy action setpieces throughout".
While "there's nothing glaringly wrong" with multiplayer without a "steady stream of additional levels, or a strong community to sustain it" the multiplayer will come to feel "a bit empty in a few months".
Dead Space 2 gets a 9.5 and wins the Editor's Choice award from Destructoid (http://www.destructoid.com/review-dead-space-2-192306.phtml). The game is described as "a ludicrously intense, graphically gorgeous, thoroughly atmospheric game" that "ramps up the absurdity to dangerous levels".
So, average then! :)
I wasn't gonna buy it, but now i am .... See you friday Isaac
EA has announced that the single-player content that you receive on your Dead Space 2 disc this week won't be all you have to look forward to. Dead Space: Severed is a two-chapter standalone expansion that runs parallel to Isaac's story.
As such, you'll be taking control of Gabe Weller as he attempts to find safety for himself and Lexine Murdock. You may recognise these names from the Wii exclusive Dead Space spin-off, Dead Space: Extraction. Which means you probably don't recognise these names at all.
ah yes, the already announced DLC :(
I pre-ordered mine today, i get some ingame codes for stuff and a code for the Dead Space XBLA game.
Dead Space 2 video shows 'Severed' DLCFirst three screens of new download contentEA has released a new video Q&A with Dead Space 2's exec producer Steve Papoutsis, who shows off the first ever screenshots of the game's upcoming 'Severed' download content.
Dead Space 2: Severed, as it's called, extends the sequel's single-player story with the addition of two standalone chapters featuring Dead Space: Extraction (Wii, PSN) leads Gabe Weller and Lexine Murdock.
In the DLC, the story of Weller and Lexine runs parallel to Isaac's vanilla adventure in Dead Space 2, but this time players will take on the role of Gabe Weller, who's working on the Sprawl as a security guard and has to fight the Necromorph to get both him and Lexine to safety.
Check out the video below for the first shots.

I'm enjoying it but it lacks consistency, it's either super easy or stupidly hard with bosses able to regenerate *sob* feels like swimming upriver. Almost finished it though.
