I forgot to add the original Lost Planet to the other thread's "Underrated Games" discussion.

I loved that game.  I know they're taking a new "squad-based" approach to the sequel, but the boss battles look epic.  I'm looking forward to Lost Planet 2

The previews for this look pretty good, is it worth playing the first game or shall I just fire straight into the second?

During a Q&A session following the Comic-Con 2009 Lost Planet panel, game producer Jun Takeuchi let slip that players would be taking to the air to do battle against the Akrid in the game's sequel.

The news came after a member of the audience asked if there would be more co-operative vehicles in the game in addition to the three-player mech we were shown during a brief demo. In response, Takeuchi explained that there would be more co-op vehicles, and some of them would fly.

After the panel was over I confirmed with Takeuchi's translating partner that yes, this was indeed new news and no, they might not have been supposed to say that.

Lost Planet 2 Co-Op Demo Coming August 19th

Capcom today announced that their co-op demo that has featured at trade shows like E3, Comic-Con and soon to be GamesCom next week, will see the light of day for Gold Members on Xbox Live on August 19th, just as GamesCom opens its doors. Silver members can download the demo on August 26th.

What can we expect? Capcom tell us this ...
"Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers around the world will be able to experience the desperate battle against the enormous G-Type Salamander Akrid boss in online, co-operative shoot outs. Utilizing a host of weapons scattered through out the arena, squads of up to four players will face off against the huge monster in an attempt to bring it down. Players can assault the Salamander in a number of ways, from shearing off its legs to actually being swallowed and fighting their way out from the inside! Superior firepower comes in many flavours, including numerous beam and projectile weapons and several Vital Suit robotic combat units that up to three players can ride at once. There are new support weapons which allow teammates to boost attack and defense abilities, while players can share life-giving thermal energy amongst injured members of their squad. Additionally, the new Dash feature allows players to sprint for short distances, bringing greater speed to combat."

4 player Lost Planet 2 co-op demo on Xbox Live? Sounds like fun.

Takeuchi: Lost Planet 2 team 'working on' couch co-op

Do you like the idea of playing Lost Planet 2 with a friend, in the same room? You'll be pleased to know that, according to producer Jun Takeuchi, the team is doing its best to make that happen. Well, the game part. You supply your own friend.

"We are actually working on two-player splitscreen," Takeuchi told Joystiq at GamesCom. "It's not easy, but if we are confident that we can do it, we'll let you know." When asked if the Lost Planet 2 solution would be similar to the staggered picture-in-picture-style display in Resident Evil 5, Takeuchi said that the issue wasn't so much the aspect ratio of split screens, but rather hardware. "Technically, cycling between two split screens, you can actually say it took visual RAM," he said. "You still have to work with two sets of AI and physics and so forth at the same time."

So, while Takeuchi "can't guarantee yet" the existence of splitscreen in the final game, don't lose hope. Or any planets -- we've lost enough of those already.

Capcom expects Lost Planet 2 to sell 3.7 million units in second half of fiscal year

Capcom's recently published financial report for the first half of the current fiscal year contains some fairly gutsy estimates for sales expectations of the developer's upcoming titles -- for instance, the report anticipates selling 300,000 copies of Resident Evil 5 Alternative Edition by March 31, 2010. However, the company expects one game to be its biggest blockbuster by a fairly enormous sales margin: Lost Planet 2, which, according to the report, will sell 3.7 million copies in the second half of FY 2010.

That's a fairly monumental increase compared to the sales statistics for the original Lost Planet, which has sold 2.28 million units life-to-date according to VGChartz. Don't get us wrong -- we've enjoyed what we've seen from the game thus far. However, if Capcom's hoping to approach that target, it may want to consider tossing some Pokémon in there. Perhaps a cameo by Master Chief, too, for good measure.

Capcom has released another new batch of screens, this time showing off more than just an end of level boss, at the CES show in Las Vegas.

Xbox World recently wrote of the sequel: "Everything we've seen of Lost Planet 2 is stronger than the original - from small additions like sprinting and fluid weapon-changing, to big ones like the brand new structure and co-op play.

"But let's not forget Capcom made a laundry list of errors in westernising Resident Evil 5, so at this stage we remain cautious, but (excitedly) optimistic."

New screens below. And don't forget it's been delayed. New date still to come

Lost Planet 2 Dated

The co-op focused third-person shooter offers "larger-than-life bosses" and four player co-op over Xbox Live or PlayStation Network, and you'll be able to take it up on that offer on May 18th in both North America and Europe. That leaves us some room in the June video game budget, if any publishers are looking to take advantage of the rest of Q2.

Although........
According to Kotaku, a new trailer shown by Capcom Japan today has revealed the guest appearances of Gears of War stars Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago in upcoming action title Lost Planet 2.

It's understood that the Gears duo will be available as exclusive downloadable characters only in the Xbox 360 game, and will not be present in the game's story.

Last night Epic's Cliff Bleszinski tweeted that some "kick ass news" was incoming - we assume this is what he was talking about.

It has been confirmed by Failed News

Here's how the cross over happened. Capcom contacted Epic. It seems that it's as simple as that. "They [Capcom] contacted us about the cameo and we said 'heck yeah,'" Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski tells Kotaku. "We're mutual fans of each others work and crossovers are darned cool so we sent over the Marcus and Dom models for implementation."

For Lost Planet 2, Capcom is working from Epic's original Marcus and Dom character models, but that does not necessarily mean it is working from Epic's Gears of War controller layout.

"I can't speak about the controls for LP2," Bleszinski adds. "Anything else about how it's accessed or used in game remains

Confirmed: Local split-screen co-op in Lost Planet 2

This week's Famitsu (via Andriasang) confirms Capcom's Lost Planet 2 will include offline split-screen co-op when it releases May 18. Series producer Jun Takeuchi told Joystiq last year at GamesCom that the developer was working on couch co-op for the game, which already features four player online co-op.

The split screen will reportedly be similar to Resident Evil 5's staggered screens, maintaining the aspect ratio and cutting down on the hardware requirements. So, go ahead and play Lost Planet 2 snuggled with a buddy on the couch or drinking beers with the spouse when it releases ... wait, reverse that.

Capcom has revealed the items available to those pre-ordering Lost Planet 2.
"Choose from multiplayer maps, your very own Akrid or an exclusive t-shirt," reads a Capcom statement, which makes us think you'll only get one of these items and not all three.

Still, what you get to choose from is pretty good. That's a collectible Akrid figure, a t-shirt with an exclusive design that will only be available via pre-order and multiplayer maps.

As far as multiplayer maps go, you'll have two - an underwater NEVEC mining facility (Helix) and the beachy shade of Island 902 (Back To The Island). Those with good memories will remember Lost Planet's Collector's Edition had a bonus multiplayer map as well, so it's clearly an idea Capcom is keen on.

Lost Planet 2's Wesker no longer a GameStop exclusive

You knew about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but now you can add "shooting bugs with Albert Wesker's giant handgun" to the list of inalienable rights. Capcom has just announced that, due to fan upheaval, Wesker as a playable character in Lost Planet 2 will be a bonus for everyone who buys the game, rather than for just those that pre-order at GameStop, as was previously announced.

It's not as if early birds are out of luck though. Pre-ordering at GameStop will now net you two multiplayer maps, "Helix" and "Back to the Island." The update from Capcom doesn't say as much, but we'd assume these maps will also be available for purchase as DLC, either on release day or soon after.

Lost Planet 2 trailer gets big

Capcom heralds "Kill Big" as the tagline for a new Lost Planet 2 trailer, and you can certainly see why after the break. The trailer's full of big vehicles, big trains and big helicopter things, all carrying big dudes with big guns and big armor, wearing big helmets with big cylindrical ears. Those big dudes are shooting their big guns at gigantic Akrid and sometimes manning big mechs too.

Everything about Lost Planet 2 is big, in fact, except for Capcom's video player. It's merely okay-sized. Thankfully, we've got a reasonably-sized YouTube version. So, pick up your Big Gulp of Big Red and take a big sip as you give your mouse a big click to head past the break. And, if you're really big on Lost Planet, join the other obsessives in picking apart the trailer.

Lost Planet 2 brought forward a week

Capcom has announced plans to release a limited-access multiplayer demo of Lost Planet 2 next week and brought the game's release date forward a week to 11th May on PS3 and Xbox 360.

The demo will be available on PSN and Xbox Live but initially it will only be accessible to people who have a redeemable code distributed through the Lost Planet 2 website (http://www.lostplanet2game.com/) and other media outlets. Xbox 360 codes will work on 31st March and PS3 ones will work on 1st April, Capcom has said.

Eurogamer will have a number of keys for both PSN and Xbox Live next week, so stop by then and we may be able to sort you out. The demo will be made available to everyone on 21st and 22nd April for Xbox Live and PSN respectively.

As for what's in it, you get to enjoy 16-player battles on the "Turbulent Jungle" map from the online versus mode, along with full voice chat and result stats support "so players can establish bragging rights".

What's more, players who download and play the demo will get access to the special Machine Gun SP, which fires three-round bursts, when they purchase the full game.

Lost Planet 2 getting guest characters from Dead Rising, Monster Hunter

A handful of Lost Planet 2 screenshots from Famitsu  have revealed the game will borrow the stars of two more franchises: Frank West from Dead Rising and the Scaly Knife-Gun Dude from Monster Hunter, the latter being exclusive to the PS3 version of the game. For those of you keeping track, these two join Gears of War's Marcus and Dom (who will only appear in the 360 version), Resident Evil's Wesker, and What's His Face from Lost Planet 2 in the fight against the calamitous, towering Akrid.

Though most of these crossovers seem pretty out of place, we're betting the dude from Monster Hunter will be right at home bringing down monsters the size of football stadiums. That kind of thing is right in his wheelhouse.

Pair of Lost Planet 2 multiplayer maps to be GameStop pre-order bonus

During its Captivate 2010 media event last week, Capcom revealed two additional multiplayer maps for Lost Planet 2. On top of the 10 maps included on the game disc, this pair of DLC maps will be used as a pre-order incentive (apparently exclusive  to GameStop) and will also be made available for all owners of the game to purchase at an unspecified point in time after the game's release.

The maps, "Helix" and "Back to the Island," are (according to G4) said to feature the ability to swim (well, tread water, at least) with the former taking place underwater at the NEVEC ocean research facility. The latter, a remake of a map from the original game, sounds like it starts off on the beach of Island 902, carries on into the jungle, and then eventually winds up underground after players open a mysterious hatch. It's a lost planet, after all.

it's frakkin Hard solo, like you said, i can't wait to play it coop though.... online was a bit meh! but i only played TDM. I reckon playing some of the better modes like post grab etc will make it more fun.

Very cinematic game, with a Gearsy feel, minus the cover system (sorely missed).

I think this game is great

However :-\
Playing with randoms can be very annoying. I was playing episode 3 (the one with the train) and one dumbass kept falling off the train costing the rest of us our battlegauge/lives remaining and instead of a few checkpoints that this game needs you have to go all the way back to the start of a chapter >:(

They said "you are only as good as your weakest player"
They weren't kidding!

I read a review that mentioned playing solo can be a pain too because of really awful teammate AI, still can't wait to try it though and with the amount of people on here with the game i'm sure we can arrange some co-op sessions.

pffft would be nice if they told me how to kill the boss at the end of this chapter, i had to go on the net just to find out what to do. Boss battles are immense and it takes forever chipping health of them, which makes them feel even more epic.

It gives you tips how to defeat that boss on the news ticker that can be seen on the campain menu screen. Finished episode 3 with Neato last night, great fun ;D

The AI is actually surprisingly awesome in this game.  The problem is that the AI cannot (or choose not to) perform objectives (repairing, cooling, activating, etc.).

When playing by yourself, you have to do all of the 'tasks' on your own, while the AI rampage through the enemies.  However, some tasks are near-impossble to do by yourself, like repairing / cooling / loading / firing the giant cannon thing.

the computer loaded and charged the cannon for me, they just wouldn't fire it or do the cooling, i got my mate to help me today took us 2 goes and lots of stressful shouting at each other.

It was great fun.  This game is not at all what I was expecting.  I was a big fan of the first Lost Planet.  This is a very Japanese/Arcade style co-op game.  Rediculous characters.  Incoherent story.  Impossible-to-navigate menu.  But the visuals and weapons in the game provide infinite enjoyment.

Lost Planet 2 Patch Available Now on Xbox LIVE

The Lost Planet 2 patch Capcom revealed last week is now live for Snow Pirates on the Xbox 360. There have been some minor and major changes based on the feed back from the fans. For instance, the sprint is now even faster. As well as other changes like if you die at a boss fight you don't have to start that whole mission over. Instead, you can jump right back  at the boss battle.

The full details of the fixes and updates the patch delivers are included below, direct from Capcom, and Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all Electronic Theatre Imagethe latest details on the Lost Planet videogame series.

- Respawning points are changed - e.g. the player can start from the beginning of the boss fight, rather than start the level from the beginning and so on.
Applies to the whole game.

- The player's attacking power has been strengthened.
This applies when the difficulty level is set at either Easy or Normal and when only one player starts the game.

- The level of animations for the player being affected near by attack/explosion is lowered.

- Weapons' parameters are adjusted - i.e. they became quite evenly balanced (not too strong, not too weak).
Applies to the whole game.

- The speed of the player's dash is increased.
Applies to the whole game.

Got home from my travels and had this waiting for me, booted it up and, er, what the f*ck... can't even get up a wall. I know I'm a crap gamer but even I'm not this stupid, what the hell am I missing. There's no gameplay instructions on how to move or anything! Have I just wasted £17 'cos at the moment I feel like trading it in straight away  >:(

Lost Planet is painfully Japanese (if you get my drift).  It's a great game, but if you're not familiar with that gaming culture you'd be best to get some rest like Luke said and start fresh when your brain can adjust.

hmmm, theres no real tutorial, when you come to the wall you first grapple up theres a little sign post that shows you how. I really like LP2, finished it twice now and half way through another play. I was just waiting for the update which makes Single Player easier, when playing solo.

Capcom Explains Lost Planet 2's Failure
Crossplatform shooter was company's number one title for the quarter, but failed to live up to expectations

Capcom shared its quarterly earnings yesterday and cited Lost Planet 2 as one of the reasons for a 70% drop in operating profits.

While the company said the game "underperformed its projection substantially," Lost Planet 2 was actually its top selling game for the quarter. New earnings materials released by the company today list the game as having shipped 1.5 million copies worldwide. This beats out Super Street Fighter IV's 1.35 million and the Monster Hunter 3's overseas (Europe and North America) sales of 690,000. All three titles were released in the quarter.

Back in May, Capcom shared sales targets for the upcoming fiscal year. For Lost Planet 2, it listed 2.2 million units.

During a Q&A session at an earnings briefing today, company reps were asked why the game underperformed. Two reasons were cited. First, competition is tough in the shooting genre and they did not differentiate LP2. The other reason is that because the game was delayed from its original release period, they could not give it adequate promotions.

not looking good for Lost Planet 3 .... although 1.5m copies isn't that bad, compared to some games that get burnt and only ship a few 100k.

Also i think they would have made 2.2m if they didn't have the worlds hardest achievement list.

If Capcom follows through with it's "Let's use US developers to make sequels for now on" strategy, Lost Plant 3 will do just fine.

I think Lost Planet 2's Japanese-esque menu system and campaign pacing turned a lot of western customers away.  The game is great, but a lot of my friends ended up trading/returning it.

Personally, I think they would have had more success by marketing the game as a new franchise.  It certainly didn't feel like a sequel to Lost Planet.

How To Add West And Wesker To Lost Planet 2

Previously unlockable only by having older game saves on your console's hard drive, a generous Capcom has divulged the secret to unlocking Dead Rising's Frank West and Resident Evil's Albert Wesker to Lost Planet 2, game save-free.

Perhaps Lost Planet 2 didn't live up to sales expectations because it required game saves from Resident Evil 5 and either Dead Rising or the original Lost Planet in order to unlock Albert Wesker and Frank West. Capcom fixes that issue by divulging the process to follow in order to unlock the two popular characters without the older data.

All you need to do is press the 'Y' or 'triangle' buttons at the 'MY PAGE' or 'MY CHARACTER' screens, press 'X' or 'square' to open a password box, and then enter the following codes: 72962792 for Wesker, and 83561942 for Frank West.

BAM! Now you can use Wesker and West in online multiplayer, as well as the campaign, as long as you've beaten every episode already.

Capcom mentions that you can also use the two skins in the new Rush Arena Mode DLC, released yesterday.
