After years of being accused of being vapourware, concrete information about the gritty crime epic based on 1940s Los Angeles will finally reach gamers worldwide. On March, GameInformer take a look at Team Bondi's game with a 10-page feature
It's good to know that the game is still in development, as so many years with scarce news have dilluted the gaming community's interest in the game. The Gameinformer staff that will publish this feature have also confirmed in their comments section the news that everyone was expecting: the game is no longer exclusive, as it will be released on both PS3 and 360
(http://gameinformer.com/resized-image.ashx/__size/610x0/__key/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles/00.00.00.00.06/8204.marchcover.jpg)
Good to know that it's now multi-platform, another PS3 exclusive falls by the way side, just like Assassin's Creed.
L.A. Noire screens are all pinstripes and pipes
(http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/02/la-noire-gi-02152010.jpg)
The first batch of screens from Rockstar's long-awaited L.A. Noire have finally surfaced over at Game Informer (http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/02/15/new-exclusive-screens-for-l-a-noire.aspx), likely having enjoyed a lengthy three martini lunch in some dark, smokey bar in Uptown for the past ever. The screens depict things very appropriate to the period -- white wall tires and smart business suits; long shadows and plenty of pistols. As for other details, we won't know until the latest issue hits newsstands.
L.A. Noire's mocap system claims to set new bar for 3D performances
(http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/la.noire.041709-580px.jpg)
"Traditional motion capture could never bring to life the subtle nuances of the chaotic criminal underworld of L.A. Noire in the same way as MotionScan," claims Team Bondi's Brendan McNamara, commenting on MotionScan. It's the new motion capture technology being employed first by his studio's moody crime game, L.A. Noire. In a press release yesterday, Depth Analysis announced the new tech and touted its many applications in the forthcoming Rockstar title.
Allegedly, MotionScan uses "32 high-definition cameras to capture true-to-life three-dimensional performances at up to 30 frames per second," thus allowing for the supposedly "emotional performances" that McNamara says make L.A. Noire "a truly unique and revolutionary game." Aside from the claims of higher quality, the mocap system supposedly has lower operation costs due to a streamlined post-production processing time. With any luck, we'll finally see all this big talk in action -- and compare ir with other performance-capture scenes in games like Uncharted 2, Alan Wake and Heavy Rain -- this September when the game arrives on store shelves.
looks an interesting game, i quite like ye olde mafia stuff, like the game Mafia.
I def want to check this out, but might just consider renting it first to see how much replay value the game has.
i have no luck renting, whenever i rent a game i then want it to keep and finish off. Currently want Bayonetta after i rented it last week.
who knows, the game might just look pretty and actually be poo. We'll have to wait and see.
I currently have WET and Surf's up, and sometimes you feel like you need to complete them fast and get your next rental!!
Ruby is mega hot!
I like games with a distinct atmosphere. As long as the story and/or gameplay is not complete crap, I'll probably really enjoy this game.
Regarding the supposedly mind-blowing mocap ... I'll believe it when I see it. Heavy Rain claimed the same, and left much to be desired. :-\
L.A. Noire isn't your 'average adventure game'
We don't yet know precisely what to make of Rockstar's upcoming L.A. Noire (not that that's necessarily a bad thing), but after poring over a new Edge piece on the game, we think we may be getting a clearer picture.
"With traditional adventure games, everything is based on what the designer wants you to figure out," Jeronimo Barrera, VP of product development at Rockstar, told the publication. "We've kind of gone for a different approach, which is more like real-world detective work."
Developer Team Bondi isn't coming right out and putting it this way, but L.A. Noire sounds like a new genre, caught halfway between the open-world action of a Grand Theft Auto and the brainteaser pacing of a classic adventure game. Could we be witnessing the birth of the true "detective" game? Figure that one out.
I read the muti-page article in Game Informer for L.A. Noire. I have to say it looks very promising.

Rockstar opts out of E3
Rockstar's not going to E3, favouring instead a more personal event that will take place later in the year.
That means we'll not see anything of LA Noire, Max Payne 3 or mysterious PS3 exclusive The Agent at E3.
VG247 confirmed (http://www.vg247.com/2010/06/01/rockstar-to-have-no-presence-at-e3/) the publisher no-show this afternoon after a UK journalist tweeted this morning that Rockstar had chosen not to launch a game at E3.

L.A. Noire officially delayed
1940s detective game L.A. Noir has been delayed to "the first half of calendar 2011", Take-Two has announced.
Publisher Rockstar Games previously said it was due out this autumn. L.A. Noir was originally announced in 2005.
The confirmation comes as no surprise: rumour of the game's delay hit the internet in July.
In L.A. Noir players rise through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department as they interrogate criminals and other shadey characters.
Team Bondi founder Brendan McNamara reckons the development team's "defeated the uncanny valley", so good are the character's faces.
During a question and answer session following Take-Two's Q3 earnings call this evening, chairman Strauss Zelnick explained the delay.
"Obviously when we schedule a title, we're trying to be mindful of at least two issues. First, how long does it take to put out an a plus title? When you're trying to do something ground breaking, it can take a while.
"We have tried very hard to balance appropriately a desire to have a rational release schedule with a desire to put out triple-A titles.
"Every time we push the envelope creatively, it takes a while. In this particular instance, I'm not going to disclose all the advancements, they're pretty extraordinary, they are complex and worth waiting for.
"Equally, we do try to pick the right marketing window. That is important. One of the things we're proud of around here is we've extended the marketing window. We've shown the market if you put something fantastic out people will come out for it. That's for pretty much year round.
"That said we do want to be mindful of what the competition is doing and we don't want to stack up a release unnecessarily. These are expensive products. One of the things we found with Red Dead to our happiness is we were able to crowd out some of the competition because the best title in the market won the day."
Feder added: "We get criticised often for title movement and not being on time and on budget. I've pointed out in the past that Red Dead Redemption took down any number of titles and was both on budget and on time.
"If a title needs more time it needs more time and we're willing to give it. I will say about L.A. Noir that as I look around competitively at the marketplace, there is nothing else quite like it in terms of the gameplay and the technology behind it. We want to make sure we get it absolutely right."
L.A Noire tech 'isn't available anywhere else'
Take-Two CEO talks up 2011's big titles
Take-Two CEO Ben Feder has been talking up the company's big titles for 2011 giving L.A Noire the hard sell with the good old "unique" label.
Except Feder didn't just spout the usual vague hyperbole with phrases like "one of a kind" and "never before".
No, Feder went one better by saying that L.A Noire has got "technology and gameplay that isn't available anywhere else."
OK so it's not much more specific but at least it's something tangible.
The tech Feder's talking about is probably the stunning L.A Noire face tech, which blew OPM ed-in-chief away at E3 earlier this year.
It's a good job as well because Feder also said that good games aren't good enough these days.
"In fact, good is the new bad," he said.
"Games have to be great, and there's no company like Take-Two to make the best games in the industry."
With titles like GTA and Red Dead under your belt, you can make those kinds of claims.
L.A Noire will arrive in 2011 after being officially delayed at the beginning of the month.
First proper LA Noire video this week
Rockstar's new open world detective game LA Noire will be shown this week.
"The first trailer", as it's billed, will arrive at noon on Thursday, 11th November. That's noon Eastern Time, which means five hours later here: 5pm UK time.
LA Noire was delayed recently to "the first half of calendar 2011". The game was announced years ago in 2005.
It's a 1940s crime thriller based around you rising through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department. Central to everything is a magnificent-sounding motion-capture system, which records the look, voice and actions of real-life actors and then processes them into the game.
Such a level of detail enables a sophisticated interrogation mechanic, whereby players can judge facial expressions and behavioural quirks to determine whether a suspect is holding anything back. Team Bondi is also said to have written an unprecedented 300 pages of script for the game.
I hope this game is 1/2 as good as I imagine it will be.
It's like a James Ellroy novel, should be great
Rockstar: 'Big update' for L.A. Noire on the way
Ready for a "special look behind the technology"?
Rockstar is set to give fans a "big update" on upcoming crime thriller L.A Noire in the coming days.
The developer has teased that the news will offer a "special look behind the technology of the game". Our money's on a trailer showcasing Noire's astounding facial scanning tech.
If that's the case, it will be well worth a watch. We came away a little shaken (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=276597) by just how lifelike the game's protagonists appeared following a special preview last month.
L.A Noire has been co-developed by Australian studio Team Bondi and Rockstar.
Set in Hollywood, 1947, it tells the tale of Cole Phelps - a WW2 War vet who returns home and joins the LAPD.
after reading the edge feature and viewing the trailer this game has officially moved to the very top of my most wanted list
I was never really a fan of Rockstar until Red Dead Redemption.
From what I've seen of LA Noire so far, Rockstar may be on their way to 'BioWare Status' in my heart.
LA Noire is definitely looking like a must have for next year.

Spring so there's a good chance. :)
IGN has an article where users questions are answered by the Rockstar team. I've copied a couple of interesting ones below or read the full article here (http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/114/1144149p1.html)...
Link_Is_My_Homie asks... I've heard you have multiple ways of uncovering secrets in the game. Will more skilled detectives be rewarded for their ability to uncover clues quickly?
Jeronimo Barrera: The goal of the game is to be the best detective you can possibly be, so each case eventually ends with you solving the case correctly and rising through the ranks of the LAPD. How you get there is determined by the choices you make through the case, leading you down separate paths on your way to each break in the case. Your effectiveness at solving cases will be determined by how quickly you can use what you find to solve a case. Scouring a crime scene for clues is just one part of solving a case quickly.
Discovering different clues may open up different leads to new locations or suspects, which in turn open up new options for a player to decide how to go about solving a case. But that's only part of the challenge: during interrogations, players must correctly analyze a suspect in order to get the most information from them, and know which evidence to present and when to present it to get the answers they need.
KYGkillingyouguy asks... Will this technology became standard for future Rockstar games?
Jeronimo Barrera: We would love to see it implemented as widely as possible, whether it is appropriate will depend on the project. MotionScan is more than just the end result; it's an entire approach to game development, so it will not work for every game. It's a huge part of L.A. Noire because it's tied to the core mechanics of analyzing a suspect's behavior during interrogations and reading their emotional cues. It's a pioneering form of technology that breaks new ground for gameplay.
Ridabelaco asks...Can you mess up an investigation like send to jail the wrong guy? And how will that affect the main character or the history of the game?
Brendan McNamara: There is an overarching plot that governs the story of the game, but how you get there is up to you. There are definitely situations in the game where you can arrest the wrong suspect. It's a player choice and adds an interesting challenge, especially if the evidence is compelling for both suspects.
AndrewW91 asks... Could you give us a sense of how open the world is? And what kind of activities we can take part in while not on a mission (if any)?
Jeronimo Barrera: The world is completely open for you to travel through at all times, but the focus of the game is not the same as a Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption. This time, the city is a backdrop for the incredibly accurate real-world locations and crime scenes that Cole Phelps explores on his way to solving each case. The game has been crafted to seamlessly blend classic cops-and-robbers style action with dynamic interrogations and searching for suspects in a way that one doesn't distract from the other.
There are ambient events within the game world that you will hear more about in the weeks ahead, like unassigned cases or robberies in progress that you can take on outside of the main story, but the focus is on Cole's progression through the ranks of the LAPD and the events that unfold as a result.
It's a very intense game because we ask you to listen very carefully to what has been said and to remember names, places and clues, as well as decide whether you can believe what someone is saying. It's going to be a very new experience for our audience but one we think they are very ready for.
Sounds like its shping up nicely...cant wait
This does sound pretty good.
I hope this game is hard.
In that it does not hold your hand. I want to feel that it's down to me to investigate all the crimes and it will be my own conclusion to each case, And not being hand held by a AI character who jumps in when your getting it wrong. Especially with the whole facial MotionScan, It should be up to the player to determine the conclusion of the case.
The game does look exceptionally good and I trust Rockstar to get it right, But the game will hinder on the above points for me.

50 hours of dialogue recorded for LA Noire
Story promises to contain plenty of "twists and turns"
If you started listening to the recorded dialogue for upcoming detective-em-up LA Noire at midnight on Monday, you wouldn't finish until 2am on Wednesday. Head of Team Bondi, Brendan McNamara, has confirmed (http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1144147p1.html) in an interview with IGN that fifty hours of footage has been recorded for the game.
Chances are that a lot less than that will be heard during a single play through, but it speaks a lot to the game's length and/or how much the story branches throughout.
McNamara says that "each case has its own twists and turns depending on the choices you make, leading you down different paths on your way to cracking the case, giving you plenty of reasons to jump back in and replay the game."
With each line of dialogue delivered in such an impressively realistic way, thanks to the Motionscan technology being utilised, we're certain that even after fifty hours we'd be eager to hear more.
when is this out in the uk
Should be out in around 4 or 5 months, maybe longer.
hmm just in time for my summer hols -lovely ;D
I have to put this on my list of games to buy. This looks like it will be really good.

Wow, they all look pretty fucking amazing. I really can't wait til this comes out. The guys face in the top pic looks a bit 'over-detailed' if you know what I mean, but the rest all look great, this facial motion whatchamacallit thing looks like it could be a huge success :D
I know some people like going at games like this cold-turkey, so watch at your own discretion - this one's got more details on the story and the tech:
so it says in the video that while it's set in an open world environment it's a much more linear experience than GTA or Red Dead, it's a lot more story focused. So it might be a game for you after all failed, you should reserve your judgement! I really like the look of it but i hope it isn't too linear.
maybe, but it's coming around the same time as EDF:IA ..... which is a much better game :P

L.A. Noire release date confirmed
A leaked trailer for Rockstar's open world detective thriller L.A. Noire has revealed a 17th May release date.
It is unclear at this stage whether the date relates to a worldwide or a North American launch.
The video was pulled from YouTube following a copyright claim by Rockstar's parent company Take-Two.
L.A. Noire, announced years ago in 2005, is a 1940s crime thriller based around you rising through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Central to everything is a magnificent-sounding motion-capture system, which records the look, voice and actions of real-life actors and then processes them into the game.

L.A Noire UK release date officially confirmed
Title coming to EU on May 20
Rockstar has announced the release date of L.A Noire - confirming news which leaked as part of a new trailer over the weekend.
The promising crime thriller will hit the US on 360 and PS3 on May 17, and will be released in the EU and UK three days later.
"L.A. Noire breaks new ground for us," said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games. "Its intense blend of action and real detective work defies genre conventions to create a unique and
captivating thriller."
The game pits you as Cole Phelps, a decorated war veteran who rises through the ranks of the LAPD by solving gruesome murders and other crimes in post-WW2 Hollywood.

L.A Noire pre-order DLC planned post-launch
Rockstar confirms pre-order rewards "after the game comes out".
Rockstar has said that L.A Noire's pre-order content will be released as DLC "at some point after the game comes out".
The L.A Noire pre-order content was detailed at the end of last week.
Depending on where you pre-order from, you'll get your hands on different cases. In 'The Naked City' - to be snapped up at GAME, for example, players are tasked with investigating the suicide of a fashion model.
They can also collect 20 police badges hidden around 1947 Los Angeles in the The Badge Pursuit challenge.
Have a look at the other L.A Noire pre-order deals and where you can get them from if you're thinking about getting in there before the game arrives.

Amazon is having their usual $10-20 bonus credit on preorders for LA Noir.
My preorder list has gotten out of control over the past year, so I've decided to not actually preorder anything over 1 month in advance. I keep losing track of where I preorder, and often end up with a bunch of store credit that just sits unused for months. >:(
:x i asked my boss today if there was any DLC for the game and he looked at me funny.... since we had a weird discussion on DLC last week..
now i know why..
asshole. -.-
Main L.A. Noire story 25-30 hours long
The main L.A. Noire story lasts 25 to 30 hours, Rockstar has revealed.
On top of the unmissable "assigned cases" you can investigate "unassigned cases" - side-quests, PlayStation Life reported (http://playstationlifestyle.net/2011/03/14/l-a-noire-main-story-takes-25-30-hours-to-complete/).
Consider that more unassigned cases will be added through DLC and L.A. Noire should keep you happy for weeks.
Just like Homefront (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-03-08-kaos-defends-5-hour-homefront-campaign). What?
L.A. Noire is an ambitious detective game built on a new generation of performance capture technology. The result is so real you can deduce clues from interrogations by catching suspects out and watching their reaction.
L.A Noire bestowed with movie festival honour
Game becomes Official Selection at Tribeca
(http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/screenshot_251030.jpg)
Rockstar and Team Bondi's L.A Noire has become the first video game to be picked as an Official Selection at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival.
The title will take pride of place at the event, which takes place in Lower Manhattan, New York from April 20 to May 1.
"We're thrilled that L.A. Noire is being recognized by the Tribeca Film Festival in this way," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar
Games.
"It's a real honour, and another step forward for interactive entertainment."
Rockstar will also present an exclusive preview of the game as part of the Tribeca Talks series, taking place on April 25, 2011.
The presentation will feature a live interactive screening of a case from L.A. Noire, followed by a Q&A exploring the crossover between filmmaking and interactive entertainment.
The Q&A will focus on the making of L.A. Noire, the technology behind it, and will be moderated by Geoff Gilmore, Tribeca Enterprises' Chief Creative Officer.
"What Rockstar and Team Bondi have accomplished with L.A. Noire is nothing less than groundbreaking," added Gilmore. "It's an invention of a new realm of storytelling that is part cinema, part gaming, and a whole new realm of narrative expression, interactivity, and immersion. We are poised on the edge of a new frontier."
L.A Noire is due for release in May on Xbox 360 and PS3.
still havent heard anything negative about this game cant bloody wait
It does look stunning but i'd like to see someone actually playing the game so I can judge the gameplay properly, not really seen enough of the gameplay yet, everything i've seen so far though has been great.

Elle has burned herself twice while getting coffee for the development staff of L.A. Noire.
L.A. Noire is going to be so good riots will consume the streets when retail stores run out of copies, resulting in mass casualties.
I am looking forward to this as well. It should help pass the time until Gears 3 comes out. ;D
Dramatic LA Noire TV ad arrivesRockstar's latest gears up for release next monthRockstar has launched a TV spot for LA Noire ahead of the PS3 and Xbox 360 title's release on May 17 in the US and May 20 in the UK.
Developed by Team Bondi in conjunction with Rockstar Games, the title sees you step into the shoes of LAPD detective Cole Phelps.
The publisher says: "In his fight to climb the ranks and do what's right, Phelps must unravel the truth behind a string of arson attacks, racketeering conspiracies and brutal murders, battling the LA underworld and even members of his own department to uncover a secret that could shake the city to its rotten core."
The PS3 edition of LA Noire looks likely to feature some exclusive content in the form of 'Consul's Car Traffic Case'.

L.A. Noire (Xbox 360) will have 3 discs!
When you think of the size of the gameworld in GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption which both released on 1 disk, This game could be massive or it might just be the face mapping taking up all the power and memory.
With all the work they put into this game, the third disc probably contains only the credits.

I'm sure it'll be pretty lengthy, hopefully it's not all cut-scenes
I suspect the 3 discs is mainly because of the face mapping, dialogue, interrogation dialogue and cutscenes. They did say it was semi open world so I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Just the one disc on PS3 (the game was originally a PS3 exclusive) and all in native 1080p, god bless blu-ray, i'll still be getting it on the 360 though so disregard everything i've just said! :-)
the lore of achievements ? :)
Yep, that and i've got a pad to play with on the 360!

Me too, gonna try it this afternoon after the football. :)
I really enjoying this game and I love the interrogation bit because I once accuse this guy of lying twice and then my partner upset him and then a full scale punch up start.
I bought it, but I know once I start playing it I won't stop. So I'll probably wait until next weekend. In the meantime I'm scorewhoring my XBLA games.

L.A. Noire Easter Eggs and Glitches (http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2011/05/20/la-noire-secrets-easter-eggs-tips-list-xbox-360-ps3.htm)
L.A. Noire Fights Autism?
Asperger's expert recommends L.A. Noire as teaching tool
Though our expertly crafted guide to L.A. Noire may be invaluable, there's one group who may still be struggling: Those living with Asperger's syndrome. Though the autism-spectrum disorder leaves cognitive and linguistic functions relatively preserved, it leaves some with what's sometimes referred to as mind-blindness, or the inability to divine what's happening in the mind of another human. In the words of researcher and coiner of the phrase Simon Baron-Cohen, those with mind-blindness find they have an inability to "put themselves into someone else's shoes, to imagine their thoughts and feelings."
In L.A. Noire, facial animations are so realistically captured that players can actually tell if their interview subjects are lying. In fact, players have to do precisely that to unearth the clues essential to putting a case together.
As we progressed through the game, we worried that could leave those with mind-blindness unable to play along, especially if the technology is more widely adopted. But where we saw a hurdle, Professor Tony Attwood sees opportunity.
Attwood, the author of The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome, conceded to us that those with the disorder may initially have trouble discerning a witness' fibs from the straight dope.
"Certainly, those with Asperger's syndrome have great difficulty in identifying such characteristics as they tend to take people and assume others may be as honest as they are," Attwood said.
But, Attwood continued, the very facets of the game that may challenge AS players may just captivate them as well.
"I think those with Asperger's syndrome would actually find the game quite fascinating as although the player is expected to make a decision on whether someone may be lying, there is the possibility of reviewing and replaying the scene to confirm whether the response was correct or identify the characteristics should a mistake have been made," he said.
In fact, Attwood said he would recommend the game to those with Asperger's as a way to learn more about human interaction. The most effective way might be to play alongside a friend or relative who could, as Attwood put it, "give feedback and guidance on the characteristics to look for to determine whether someone is lying or not."
Though L.A. Noire isn't currently set up well to allow repeat interrogations (you can quit to the main menu, but you'll often lose significant progress) we'll be interested to see if Rockstar alters that some day to help make the most of this unconventional teaching tool.

Hit up the Social Club section within the game from the main menu, enter your Social Club login information, and you will automatically unlock Cole Phelps' snazzy Chicago Lightning Suit. This Social Club members-only exclusive outfit can be worn at any point in the game after you've become a detective (following the Patrol desk cases) and will improve your accuracy when using a shotgun or machine gun. A very helpful extra edge in ability for those cases when heavy firepower is required.
