Call of Duty: Ghosts outed by retailer - first image
Not Modern Warfare 4, then?

A listing for something called Call of Duty: Ghosts has appeared over at Tesco Direct, dated for release end of December 2013. We'll have more on the subject shortly. In the meantime, check out the boxart below.

Call of Duty: Ghosts 'powered by next-generation engine'
UK retailer Tesco lets slip on more CoD details

UK superstore chain Tesco has once again seemingly prematurely leaked information on the next Call of Duty game.

The game, expected to be titled 'Call of Duty: Ghosts', thanks in part to an earlier Tesco leak, will be "powerd by a new next-generation Call of Duty engine", according to a new listing which cropped up this weekend.

The now-removed product description reads:

"The franchise that has defined a generation of gaming is set to raise the bar once again with the all-new Call of Duty: Ghosts. Published by Activision and developed by Infinity Ward, the studio that created the original Call of Duty and the seminal Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series, Call of Duty: Ghosts ushers in the next generation of the franchise, delivering a riveting all-new gameplay experience built on an entirely new story, setting and cast, all powered by a new next-generation Call of Duty engine."

Activision is yet to confirm platforms for the new game, but the series' typical annual November releases would align this year's game with the launch on Sony and Microsoft's next generation consoles, both of which are expected to go on sale before Christmas.

Earlier last week Tesco posted listings for Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the unannounced game, complete with box art which appeared to be genuine.

Additionally, a recently leaked photo of an alleged GameStop 'display blueprint' suggests that the retailer will be receiving new promotional materials related to this year's CoD for display on May 1 - hinting at a public reveal on that date.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Title, Release Date Confirmed
The rumours were true.

A promotional poster has confirmed that the next title in the Call of Duty franchise is called Call of Duty: Ghosts and that it will be released on November 5, 2013. The poster comes just 24 hours after Activision began teasing the game on its official site and marks our first confirmation of the game's title and release date.

The poster confirms previous rumours about Ghosts that first stemmed from a leak via YouTube and shows that box art in recent retailer listings was accurate.

So far, information on specific platforms hasn't been released, but expect an official reveal to come on May 1st.

Meh! Same old,same old.

Yeah, CoD is quickly turning into the kind of franchise that has more creativity flowing through their marketing campaigns than their actual products.   :P

I still buy them on release day because you can get it for £25 from Tesco knowing that when you've finished it a few hours later Game will give you around £35 trade in for a game you'll actually like.   :)

This is also where the beauty of rentals falls into play. Which may be where I'll be heading... but definitely not on day one.

I'm wondering how much of that has to do with hold-outs for PS4 and Xbox One. I'm willing to bet sales will even out or surpass once the new consoles drop.  Oooor...could there be some kinda COD fatigue settling in?  #)

Call of Duty sales tumble 50%, but how bad is it?

Call of Duty: Ghosts UK launch sales are around 50 per cent lower than Call of Duty: Black Ops II, retail sources have told MCV.

It’s certainly a big, worrying figure. But there are several caveats to consider. For one, Ghosts is a launch title for Xbox One and PS4 (although the PS4 version is on shelves now), so we can only consider this part one of the Call of Duty launch.

And comparatively, Ghosts has performed quite well. Battlefield 4 sales are down 69 per cent over Battlefield 3, while Assassin’s Creed IV sales are down 60 per cent of Assassin’s Creed III.

We tried to pull up some historical data to analyse the figures some more and predict future sales, but as we’ve never had two major consoles launch within a week of each other before, there’s nothing to compare it to.

The reality is, with two platform launches of this magnitude coming out so close to each other, it is likely customers are either saving up money or holding off buying software until the new machines arrive. But how many people are waiting is impossible to predict.

We should get a clearer vision as to how well or poorly Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield and FIFA have performed once the Christmas period is over.

The data comes from GfK Chart-Track reports.

Call of Duty: Ghosts sales decline 'troubling', says analyst (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/442762/call-of-duty-ghosts-sales-decline-troubling-says-analyst/)

The second comment in the comments section pretty much sums up what a lot of people think:

That's not troubling at all. What's "troubling" is that such a bad gaming series has become so big in the first place. What's "troubling" is that sales for the series didn't decline years ago. What's "troubling" is that despite this so-called decline, it's still sold far more than it should have. What's troubling is that a series like CoD that just fails to innovate and throws out essentially the same game year after year always sells more and is far more popular than so many other better, more original and more innovative games that deserve it more.

A sales decline for CoD isn't "troubling" at all. What it does, if anything, is show that perhaps there is hope in an industry that has shown nothing but a decline itself in overall quality, due largely to the big players pandering to the very audience that is responsible for CoD's popularity.

[Yet (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/442470/npd-cod-ghosts-leads-in-north-america-amid-overall-software-decline/)]

Which supports the second comment there. Hopefully things will change, but it's also a problem of over-saturation and not enough time to re-invent and re-create. CoD has been the same game since MW2, with a few locale changes and the MP adjustments, (which I'm sure is the driving force in the game franchise).

The only games that make sense in not changing much are sports games, and if they weren't as profitable - I'm sure they'd employ simple roster updates at a fraction of the cost.

I don't think I know much more about what goes on in CoD: Ghosts, other than the fact that there's a dog in it. Aside from that, it's the same game, maybe worth a rental or a discounted purchase down the road. It's just not the experience of a Red Dead or a Mirror's Edge...

The gaming industry, much like Hollywood just doesn't know how or when to stop milking the cow to let it refresh itself with greener pasture.
