Tesla guitarist reveals 'Modern Day Cowboy' headed for Guitar Hero 6

Rockers of the classic '80s band Tesla claim to be included in the yet-to-be announced (but you totally saw it coming) Guitar Hero 6. In an interview with Brave Words & Blood Knuckles, guitarist Dave Rude revealed "Modern Day Cowboy" -- from the band's 1986 debut album Mechanical Resonance -- will be included in the music title. Rude noted the song was one of three suggestions the band made to Activision when they were pursued to be included.

While some (completely talentless) acts have decried the popularity of music games such as Guitar Hero, Rude feels the genre is an important step for up-and-coming rockers. "I think it's a good thing," Rude said. "Even if people don't learn to play guitar, it's exposing them to all sorts of cool guitar-based music that they wouldn't have ever heard otherwise." You hear that Kroeger? Stop crying ... and writing the same song over and over and over again.

Guitar Hero 6, another DJ Hero coming this fall

Activision has confirmed on an earnings call today that Guitar Hero 6 will be on store shelves sometime this fall, with a new DJ Hero game coming soon after. The music game market is a changing place, admitted CEO Bobby Kotick -- it will "continue to compress," with fewer titles and brands finding success. Activision has "moved from the sell-through of higher-priced peripherals," and its new plan is for "improved economics on a higher percentage of software sales."

Kotick said that Guitar Hero "remains the leader in the category with more than 44 million games sold to date," and that both releases this year would be followed with "a full lineup of exciting downloadable content."

Guitar Hero 6 drops playable stars

Guitar Hero 6 will not feature playable celebrity likenesses.

Maybe legal arguments with No Doubt and Courtney Love have swayed Activision.

The game will instead allow real-life legends like Metallica founder (and drummer) Lars Ulrich to be recruited in Quest mode, according to Official Xbox Magazine. Complete their songs and you'll unlock a uniquely-powered alter-ego. Character Warrior Lars has a maximum 6x multiplayer.

Kiss hero Gene Simmons will narrate the Quest mode.

Guitar Hero 6 aims to return to the series' foundations, reinstating the old characters and focusing more on Rock n' Roll.

Streakers, Momentum and Do or Die will be available in online modes, and all DLC will be carried over into the new game.

Glam rockers Queen, Kiss and Black Sabbath have been confirmed

Guitar Hero 6 hasn't been officially unveiled but has been talked about by Activision in financial reports gone by. Expect full word soon, especially with E3 around the corner.

Guitar Hero 6 Is A Warrior Of Rock, Apparently

Unlike the previous title, Activision's next Guitar Hero game won't be numbered, so it won't be called "Guitar Hero 6". It'll be called "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock".

Yes, Warriors of Rock. Sounds dangerously close to the name of a Manowar song, doesn't it? Let's hope the similarities don't end there, and Activision can actually make good on its promise of returning the series to its rocking roots, and away from anything and everything it had become by Guitar Hero 5.

That said, the presence of My Chemical Romance and AFI amongst the featured bands does not bode well, no matter how many Slayer songs they throw in to dilute the effects (so far it's just one, Chemical Warfare).

Guitar Hero 6 Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock will be out at the end of the year, for PS3, 360 and Wii.

Mark Knopfler is a true "guitar hero" so everything else is out of place, surely.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock instruments can be customized

We've heard it said that a musician's instrument is his weapon, especially when his concert erupts into violins. Perhaps that doesn't apply to music game peripherals, but the new Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock instruments certainly seem edgier than we've come to expect. GameAxis  has shown off the new guitar design, which is confirmed by a report on Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5556826/the-new-guitars-of-guitar-hero). (How did Activision manage to lose a prototype peripheral?)

According to the report, the wireless guitar's electronics are contained within the neck, leaving the body wings free to be detached and replaced with alternate, possibly even sillier designs. The default guitar (seen above) is only the beginning, with an "axe" design (below) set to become available exclusively through pre-order at Gamestop. Wouldn't that be the perfect last-minute addition to your Fellowship of the Ring theme band?

That's cool.

It would be even cooler if I didn't already own all of Soundgarden's albums.

I'm a Rock Band fan anyways.   :P

The press release calls the deal a "groundbreaking collaboration that marks the first time a new music album will be simultaneously released and bundled with a video game".

By the way ... when did people start considering a "greatest hits" album a "new music album"?

Dummmmmies  ???

I like soundgarden a lot, but not enough to buy the game just for a greatest hits. IO suppose it's a good deal if you were gonna get the game anyways though.

A Guitar Hero game every year "a given"

Guitar Hero developer Neversoft has accepted that publisher Activision will release a Hero game every year despite admitting the studio lost its soul competing with rival Rock Band.

"With Guitar Hero World Tour [2008] we kind of lost our souls a bit," project director Brian Bright told Develop.

"We lost that spark by trying to cater to everyone. We were in this arms race with our competitor [Rock Band 2], and in the end I felt like we sold a bit of our souls."

In 2009 Neversoft created three Hero games: Band Hero, Guitar Hero Metallica, and Guitar Hero 5.

"We did make quite a few games last year, and if you count up the sales of all of them it was close to how well World Tour sold," Bright said.

"But the release of all those games split the marketing team's focus, it split our studio's focus."

Publisher Activision will release one Hero game this year: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, due out in the UK on 24th September.

"We did put out quite a few games last year, and we wanted to make a game that stood out and had its own identity," Bright continued.

"Rather than go head-to-head with our own games and our competitors, we decided we wanted to make something different."

Bright said Warriors of Rock goes back to Guitar Hero's roots, and will be... Ahem... Rock hard.

"What we saw at the end of Guitar Hero 5 is that, after a month of release, about 40 per cent of the audience were playing on expert. The core has got to a pretty high level, so we really want to up the challenge."

But what of the future?

"Is there a danger that the music genre will become saturated? Most certainly," Bright said.

"But I think it's a given that there will be a Guitar Hero game every year. It's just that there were so many last year."

Guitar Hero series in trouble

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock has sold just 86,000 copies in its first week in the US, across all formats.

The figures, which were obtained by CVG from analyst Cowen & Company, represent a serious decline for the series.

Guitar Hero 5 managed 499,000 sales in its first month in 2009, Guitar Hero: World Tour topped 500,000 in its first week in 2008 and Guitar Hero III managed 1.4 million units in five days the year before.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock entered the UK all-formats chart at six when it launched last month. Eurogamer's Johnny Minkley awarded the game a solid 7/10.

Earlier this year, Rock Band developer Harmonix talked down fears that the music genre was in terminal decline. CEO Alex Rigopulos claimed, "I absolutely do not believe that rhythm-action gaming has reached its peak."

Let's see if Rock Band 3 fares any better when it launches for DS, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 on 29th October.

When it comes to 'rhythm' games, I'm a total casual gamer.

Rock Band = Casual

Guitar Hero is just too competitive/challenging for my taste.  I want to get drunk and have fun.  Rock Band all the way for me.   8)

No point starting a new thread so i'll stick this here:

All Guitar Hero and DJ Hero DLC To Be Pulled By Activision This Month

Activision has declared that it'll be pulling all DLC for Guitar Hero, DJ Hero and Band Hero at the end of this month, putting an end to the content's availablilty. This also includes Guitar Hero mobile games as well as console releases.

"We want to thank all of you for supporting Guitar Hero over the last nine years," Activision stated on its Guitar Hero Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/GuitarHero/photos/a.88575948619.84770.29438478619/10152295986523620/?type=1). Before the content is pulled, fans will be able to purchase selected tracks at a 50% discount, as a "thank-you".

Guitar Hero servers will remain online, however, and all songs already purchased will still be playable. Activision is hopeful that Guitar Hero will return one day in a "reinvented" guise, while Rock Band will apparently return "at the right point in time." The DLC for the latter game remains available.

Get your Guitar Hero songs in while you still can then. The content will be pulled on March 31st.
