BioShock 2: Ten New Things To Do
Checklist of what to do when you revisit Rapture...

There are plenty of eyes on BioShock 2, the sequel to one of 360's biggest and perhaps most surprising hits.

With Ken Levine's involvement relegated to the background and a new development team at the fore, it has extra pressure to deliver besides having its own illustrious predecessor to live up to.

So what's there to do in the sequel? Plenty. As well as featuring the same mix of plasmids, gunplay and creative art that makes you want to sit there and absorb the retro style, there are a couple of new tweaks and cool bits that help this sequel stand out... we list ten of them here!

Watch Andrew Ryan

He's back! Well... almost. A trip through Rapture Amusements sees you passing through a delapidated tour of Andrew Ryan propaganda, where models of the man himself tell you about how evil the surface is. It's full of deliciously dark humour and imagery and turns surprisingly menacing when you see what those who opposed Ryan's rule have done to one of the final models of him.

Read The Wall Messages

"RAPTURE FAILED WE WILL NOT"
"REJECT THE TYRANNY OF THE SELF"
"THE END OF RYAN IS THE END OF THE SELF"

As with Left 4 Dead, reading the messages can fill you in with insight on the world and ambiguous clues as to what is really going on. Early on, the messages make it clear that there is lingering bitterness over Andrew Ryan's rule.

Cause Comedy Death

The Spear Gun is one of the new toys you get to play around with and it's definitely one of the most fun. Fire this at a Splicer and watch the momentum of the spear send his body barreling backwards, as it pins him to the wall. Then there are explosive spears too...

Think of Half-Life

One section sees you arrive on a train of sorts, as you peer out the window and see Rapture in decay. It's reminiscent of Half-Life's famous intro and while it isn't quite as effective, you do have to return to the train later on. You'll have to wait and see why.

Examine Their Feet

If you want an example of how detailed Rapture's world is, check out the feet on some of the female Splicers without shoes. Some of them have bound feet, a sign of the rich and wealthy in China. This practice presumably trickled down to Rapture as Andrew Ryan set about creating his own social elite and it's a really cool (if gruesome) example of the attention to detail on show.

Make The Little Sisters Squeal

Another example of the attention to detail. If you try to hack and you fail, you'll be zapped with a blast of electricity. Part of being a Big Daddy is ferrying Little Sisters around on your back. If you have one clinging to you when you screw up a hacking mini-game, you'll hear them yelp in pain too, as they'll also be hit by the electric blast.

Hack From A Distance

One of the new tools is the Remote Hacking Dart. This, combined with the one-button hacking mini-game (it's now a small bar at the bottom of the screen that needs well timed button presses) means you can nip into a room, zap a turret, scurry back out to hack it. You can kill all the Splicers ahead without even looking them in the eye.

Be Afraid Of The Surface

They snatch your children! They steal your homes! They are bloody well evil! As mention, Andrew Ryan's us-versus-them vision of his utopia against the evils of the surface dwellers lives on, via his museum, posters and his own demented ramblings in the diaries dotted about the place.

Smell Your Way Forward

Part of BioShock 2 is finding ADAM for the Little Sisters to retrieve, then protecting them as they go about their business. But how do you find ADAM in the first place? Hold X and the Little Sisters will pick up the scent, clearly illustrated on the screen, which means you don't have to rummage around hopelessly lost in the labyrinth that is Rapture.

Be A Pacifist

Well, not really. But you can cut down on the needless gore when using Big Daddy's drill. Why not just tap right trigger for a glancing melee attack instead of revving it up and ploughing the spinning deathtop through your enemies? We all know the answer to that one, but shhhh. We'll keep it between us.

BioShock 2 cover is familiar, absolutely filthy

Not to be overshadowed by BioWare's latest effort to depict Mass Effect 2 in one epic cover, 2K Games has released the box art for BioShock 2 -- and it doesn't win any points for originality or cleanliness. Just like the first game's cover, it features Big Daddy (this time he's you!) and Little Sister (not you). Only now, everything's behind cracked, grimy glass and the logo's covered in barnacles. Eww.

BioShock 2 Special Edition vinyl-y announced

If you find yourself enraptured by everything BioShock, you're really going to love this. 2K Games has disclosed details on the BioShock 2 Special Edition release, limited to one production run and set for retail on February 9 alongside the slightly-less-special edition we saw the cover art for on Tuesday.

If you're prepared to sink $99 into the set ($89 for PC) you'll be the proud (but poorer) owner of the game, a 164-page hardcover art book, three posters, the orchestral score on CD and the most special goodie accompanying this edition: the orchestral score on a vinyl 180g LP. You know ... a record. You know, big black disc DJs use? Yep, one of those.

This is great news for audiophiles and those who refuse to own a CD player because lasers are obviously some kind of witchcraft.

Bioshock 2 multiplayer 'wasn't shoved on'
Developer 2K Marin says it 'went to a lot of trouble' to get new addition right; Details revealed

2K Marin has promised Bioshock fans that the second game in the series' multiplayer mode has been carefully thought out - and not "just shoved on".

Speaking to PC Zone in the magazine's latest issue, 2K Marin senior producer Melissa Miller said:

"Multiplayer is a big part of Bioshock 2 and it certainly wasn't something where we thought: 'Oh, let's just shove a multiplayer mode on.'

"We went to a lot of trouble [to ensure] that it was something that would fit properly into the Rapture universe and gameplay-wise."

Miller added details about the role of scientist Augustus Sinclair in the second installment's multiplayer.

She commented: "While Sinclair is a chief character in the multiplayer game, he doesn't actually physically show up.

"But his presence is very much felt because citizens of Rapture have enrolled in his 'Sinclair Solutions Home Consumer Rewards Club' - this pyramid scheme he started up in order to promise these people new cutting-edge plasmid weapon technology."

The  early reviews of Bioshock 2 are very promising - as is our exclusive video preview which you can see here.
Our written word preview is also very complimentary of 2K's epic.

Can't wait for Shenmue 3

I hate jokes that rely on visual imagery.

I've had it right up to here with them.

Really not bothered by this.  I only ever played the demo of the first game and that put me off.  Should I give the first game another try, bite the bullet on the sequel or aviod them both?

For me the original is the best game on the console, yes better than Gears  :) so i'm really looking forward to the sequel, i'd say give the first game a proper go as it does take a while to get going, if you don't still don't like i'd avoid the second game.
