Oculus Rift
« on: August 10, 2012, 02:03:16 PM »
The Oculus Rift is a Virtual Reality (VR) headset, aimed at video gaming, introduced on Kickstarter with a goal of $250k - it current stands at over $1.5m which is one huge push from the community with 3 weeks left. Impressive, you bet! The kickstarter is all about getting the dev kit out there, though - this might be some time off before we see it on the shelves. As ever, seeing the potential for leaps in how entertainment evolves has this one a hot topic to watch. Link to their kickstarter video below as well as a link to their kickstarter page for more info.

Colour me intrigued.

Honestly, I thought Nintendo would be the first company to put a true VR console on retail shelves.  They've been obsessed with it for decades, even before the Virtual Boy.

If Oculus takes off, I'd be surprised if Nintendo doesn't try to partner/assimilate them.

Doom 4 will receive the same virtual reality treatment given to Doom 3: BFG Edition by id Software innovator John Carmack, who revealed his plans during a QuakeCon 2012 interview.

Carmack has created a version of Doom 3: BFG Edition which utilizes the Oculus Rift, the VR display technology that's raised over $1 million on Kickstarter. Carmack has been an outspoken supporter of the hardware since endorsing the technology at E3 2012. He plans on incorporating what he's learned from his adapted Doom 3 software, and adding that functionality into the elusive Doom 4.

"I'm excited for once Doom 3 ships, and gets out there, I'll put all this stuff into the Doom 4 platform, which will be nice to take our current top-of-the-line stuff and have that in virtual reality," Carmack explained. "I'm looking forward to doing that.

"It's going to be a fully supported feature on there, because I think I could justify — based on the response that we got from our 8-year-old re-release title on here, when we finally do end up giving demos on Doom 4, we're gonna say, 'Okay, here's all this great stuff, run through all this stuff,' everybody has a great time, and then at the end you can play it in virtual reality, and that'll just put the stamp on everything. So I think I have good justification for my continued involvement in it."

Gotta love a prototype. The finished thing will look much nicer I'm sure, but that looks amusing. And a little bit like a cyborb alien facehugger.

Sad news for the group at Oculus Rift:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD7AOYhUv4Y" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD7AOYhUv4Y</a>

Oculus CEO Brenden Iribe and chief software architect Michael Antonov issued the following statement:

Quote
Andrew was a brilliant computer graphics engineer, an avid photographer and hiker who loved nature, a true loyal friend, and a founding member of our close-knit Oculus family.

Some of us have known Andrew since college, and have worked with him at multiple companies beginning with Scaleform in Maryland which he helped start at age 19, then at Gaikai in Aliso Viejo which brought him out to California, and finally at Oculus where he was a co-founder and lead engineer.

Andrew's contributions span far and wide in the video game industry. His code is embedded in thousands of games played by millions of people around the world.

Words can not express how sorely he will be missed or how deeply our sympathy runs for his family

Andrew will always be in our thoughts and will never be forgotten. We love you Reisse.

My question is not so much where is this happening? Much more, when is this happening?? The dude in the black jacket looks like he stepped out of a John Hughes flick...BTW this would also fit under the category, "Your friends are dicks..."

Oculus To Hit Consumer Market

Quote
Oculus’ first big consumer push for its virtual reality technology will come at the end of this year with the next iteration of the Samsung Gear VR for mobile, the company’s CTO John Carmack said at Game Developers Conference on Wednesday.

“The official formal strategy is that Oculus goes big, full consumer on Samsung’s next release cycle,” Carmack said.

The Gear VR is currently available as an “Innovator’s Edition,” Carmack noted, technically for sale to the public but with a caveat that it is intended for early adopters and those who don’t mind an incomplete experience.

Carmack said that he’s happy with the Gear VR hardware and the Samsung phones that it requires to run—it’s just the Oculus software and the digital games store that need to be polished up and filled with content before they move forward with a launch.

Developers should expect the Gear VR store to be more like Apple’s walled garden versus Android’s Wild West. “It is a reviewed store,” Carmack said. “We have already rejected some apps.”

Earlier this week, the Gear VR store added paid apps to its library. And Oculus showed its new version of the Gear VR, which works with Samsung’s new Galaxy S6 phones. This will be available soon, but still as an “Innovator’s Edition.”

But it’s the third iteration of Gear VR, which Carmack says will work with the as-yet-unannounced new phones that Samsung will release at the end of 2015, that Oculus will be trying to sell to anyone and everyone who wants to get in on virtual reality.

“It is going to be real,” Carmack said. “There are going to be customers.”

MS and Oculus Rift to offer what essentially boils down to a "Virtual Gaming Room" experience via the streaming XB1 gaming content to an Oculus Rift headset. This is not VR, but it's at least a sense of integration of both pieces of hardware. It's being explained much like XB1 can stream content to a PC - you'll be able to stream content (including Backwards Compatible titles) to the VR headset. Environments will look somewhat like this:

Apparently there will be several choices offered with Oculus Streaming which will launch on December 12th.
