UK gets better bargain: Pre-order Guitar Hero 5, get World Tour free

Activision's making it awfully hard for folks across this big blue world of ours to not purchase their upcoming rhythm title, Guitar Hero 5, in the States, folks who purchase the game are eligible to receive Guitar Hero: Van Halen for free. However, in the United Kingdom, the offer is incredibly sweeter, those who pre-order Guitar Hero the Fifth through Amazon can also grab Guitar Hero: World Tour for the low, low price of nothing.

OXM received instructions from Amazon.UK on how to utilize the offer, simply add Guitar Hero 5 (on any platform) to your basket, then add the special promotional version of World Tour for the appropriate console. Go to checkout, and the price of the latter will magically change to zilch. If only this kind economic wizardry applied to every purchase in our life.

Guitar Hero 5 song import costs 280MP
The price of transfering music from GH: World Tour

We've just got our hands on an early copy of Guitar Hero 5 and have discovered that it costs 280 Microsoft Points to import your on-disc music from Guitar Hero World Tour.

This licensing fee is slightly cheaper than the 400MP to transfer songs between Rock Band and its sequel.

The import process requires you to have kept hold of the Guitar Hero World Tour manual. You'll need to enter the 12 digit code on the back of it into Guitar Hero 5's menu system. This code can only be used once, so bad luck if you were planning on buying a second hand copy.

Not all of the songs are transferable, but there will soon be a compatibility list provided on the game's official website.

The fee is only for the on-disc songs, importing your old purchased DLC from Guitar Hero World Tour is free of charge.

So what do you think of the fee? Let us know if you're going to be using this feature when the game comes out in September.

Matt Bellamy in GH5
Muse frontman does his guitar-and-warbling thing in the latest look at Activision's sequel.

Activision has shown off a new Guitar Hero 5 trailer, featuring Muse's Matt Bellamy.

Matt Bellamy will be an unlockable character, just like Ozzy Osbourne and Sting were from Guitar Hero: World Tour.

The Muse song will be their oldie 'Plug In Baby'. The British band is no stranger to the Guitar Hero series, with Knights of Cydonia featuring on Guitar Hero III.

Kurt Cobain in GH5

Ugh.

Just one more reason for me to prefer RockBand over Guitar Hero.

GH5 ad which again parodies Risky Business in the same way that ads for GH World Tour & GH Metallica did.

Courtney Love Will Have Her Revenge On Activision

Creeped out by Kurt Cobain's appearance in Guitar Hero 5? Upset, even? You weren't the only one. Courtney Love, Cobain's murderer/widow, is furious, and is satisfying her fury by threatening Activision with legal action.

Posting on her - what else - Twitter account, Love wrote:

For the record this Guitar Hero sh*t is breach of contract on a Bullys part and there will be a proper addressing of this and retraction.

And then followed that up with:

WE are going to sue the sh*t out of Activision we being the Trust the Estate the LLC the various LLCs Cobain Enterprises.

Whichever way this swings, it's going to be entertaining.

Activision: Courtney Love agreed to Cobain avatar

This morning, we reported on Courtney Love's tweeted allegations that the ghastly Kurt Cobain avatar was included in Guitar Hero 5 without her consent. Though the company didn't mention whether or not the lawsuit has actually been filed against them, Activision just sent us a statement refuting Love's claims:

"Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain's likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero(r) 5."

Maybe Love did sign off on it, but just doesn't remember. There, we said it. We were all thinking it anyway.

Nirvana disapproves of GH5 Cobain avatar

Two out of three Nirvana members agree: Kurt Cobain's Guitar Hero 5 avatar is not cool. As for the third: the fact that he can't offer an opinion is kind of the whole problem. Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, former bassist and drummer for Nirvana, issued a joint statement to register their disdain with the free use of Cobain's likeness.

The pair, who have no legal say in the matter but are probably worth listening to anyway, said that they were "dismayed and very disappointed" in the use of the avatar. "While we were aware of Kurt's image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn't know players have the ability to unlock the character."

Novoselic and Grohl then entreat Activision to "re-lock" the avatar so that it can only be used to play Nirvana songs. Which is a surprisingly even-handed request.

GH5 demo now available

The demo offers three songs that can be played in the game's Party Mode, which allows players to jump in and out of a song at any time. The songs available are:

    * "The Rock Show" by Blink 182
    * "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down
    * "A-Punk" by Vampire Weekend
