Interplay has announced that its "post-apocalyptic massively multiplayer online game", currently under the working title Project: V13, will enter beta phase in 2012.

The publisher revealed the news while confirming a "definitive agreement" with Masthead Studios to develop the game, which is widely believed to be a Fallout MMO.

Project: V13 has been in the works at Interplay since November 2007, with some of the original Fallout creators leading the development. Interplay also published the original Fallout games before the licence transferred to Bethesda Softworks.

The new MMO title will use the same proprietary tools and engine as being used by Bulgarian studio Masthead for its Earthrise project.

"Masthead's technology is impressive and perfect for our Project: V13. Its team is passionate to bring our vision and game play to the market," said Interplay chairman and chief executive Herve Caen.

"This MMO will have many unique features that we will disclose before launch of the public beta in 2012."

Masthead Studios president Atanas Atanasov added: "Project: V13 incorporates many creative and technological innovations.

"We believe it will be a unique experience. Our technology will continue to evolve in order to realise all the extraordinary content and features Interplay has designed."

However, Fallout 3 studio Bethesda last year launched a legal challenge against Interplay over any potential use of the Fallout brand for its MMO.

Bethesda owns the Fallout IP and registered trademark in the US and around the world, which Interplay duly noted in its press release.

Can't wait for Shenmue 3

I hate jokes that rely on visual imagery.

I've had it right up to here with them.

Handshakes

It is good to see Interplay try to become relevant again. This might be interesting to watch.
