E3:2010 - Need for Speed #2382

Criterion Games, (responsible for the Burnout series) are working in partnership with EA to bring us, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Sound familiar? Well if you were a gamer back in the days of the PS1, you'll likely remember this being one hell of a fun game to play. There seems to be a current trend in 'resetting' games back to their days of gaming yesteryear to recapture 'the days gone by'.

The original, and indeed this latest version of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit saw players pitted against the police who attempted to thwart their attempts to complete laps of races on roads around their counties.

Initially the police would send Officer 'Not Very Good At Driving Quickly' to head you off, before sending a lot of his equally impaired friends to stop you. Things quickly escalate as the police get their act together, and then begin to despatch police super cars to stop you along with throwing the dreaded 'stinger' across the road.

The latest iteration of the title will again allow players to experience "the thrill of the chase and the rush of the escape as they play through full careers as both a cop and a racer – solo or connected". So this time, you can do the chasing down!

The game will log your runs, speed, times and a host of other petrol head statistics so you compare yourself directly with friends, or the best in the world to see how you stack up.

If Criterion Games stick to their original guns, we'll be playing this at some point in November of this year. Until then, load up the E3 trailer and see what they have to whet your appetite thus far.

Good news Criterion are working on it :D

They should do NFS Road Challenge instead!  Had all the best bits of Hot Pursuit and more! :) Oh and yeah you could be a cop and do the chasing down on Road Challenge and even call in road blocks and stingers.. (after moaning down the radio 50 times )

Honour, Respect, Loyalty.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit is 'four times bigger' than Burnout Paradise, says EA.
"Put simply it's around four times bigger than Burnout Paradise, for cars to be able to usefully reach 260 miles an hour," explains Criterion's Matt Webster when asked about Hot Pursuit's play area.

"So well over 100 miles of tarmac road and 30-40% more off-road & shortcut areas, we've opened a lot of that space up for race & chase as you are playing online versus human cops, at night time you can just turn your lights off and hide behind a bush, something that isn't really achievable with AI, when you include elevation changes its a chunk of room so for anyone familiar with Burnout it's about four times larger."  And remember, this isn't one developer trashing another - Criterion was also responsible for Burnout: Paradise

No story in NFS: Hot Pursuit

Unlike EA's recent Need For Speed outings, the forthcoming Hot Pursuit will feature no narrative in the single player mode, developer Criterion has revealed.

"We didn't really think it was necessary to include a story," senior producer Matt Webster told VG247. "If you're a cop, the aim is to go up the ranks, while a racer's aim is to get to the highest rank they can."

However, Webster promised that there was still plenty there for solo racers. "There is a full Career of events. As a racer, you have Time Trials, Races and Hot Pursuits, whereas as a cop you have Rapid Responses, Hot Pursuits and Interceptors. So yeah, there is a chunk of gameplay for the solo player."

Instead of story, Criterion is focusing on social play and a huge open world environment, which it recently estimated was four times larger than in Burnout Paradise, the studio's last title.

It races onto PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 19th November.

Watch a NFS trailer, get free cars

Criterion will release three cars for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit as a Christmas gift for fans, but only after the game's launch trailer is viewed one million times.

Three super car convertibles: the Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible; Lamborghini Murciélago LP 650-4 Roadster; and the Dodge Viper SRT10 Convertible Final Edition, will be sent down the virtual pipes as a holiday gift only if the launch trailer gets the views the Guildford studio demands.

What launch trailer? The one below. At the time of writing it had just over 141,000 views on YouTube.

Time to get clicking.

"We're thrilled to see that a lot of you are loving Hot Pursuit as much as we are," Criterion wrote on its website.

"We all knew that Autolog was something special, but you guys are proving that it's going to change racing games forever.

"We actually feel sort of guilty for ruining so many friendships over the last week – with over three million challenges exchanged already, it's clear that all is fair when it comes to the Speedwall. So now we have a challenge for all of you!"

You have until the 12th December to push the launch trailer over the million mark. There it is below.
