Lara Croft download game to be £10

Crystal Dynamics has told Eurogamer that Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will cost roughly a tenner.

"We believe that, in terms of the arcade space, we're trying to raise the bar of what it means to spend 10 pounds or 1200 Microsoft Points on nowadays," global brand manager Karl Stewart revealed.

"Yeah, it's what we're aiming at," he added, when pressed. "Obviously we're dictated to somewhat by the first-parties and their pricing models. Right now we've suggested to them that we want to come in line with all of the rest of the big hitters that have come out over the last year or so."

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a downloadable Tomb Raider spin-off for PC, PSN and XBLA. The game will feature co-op for the first time ever in the series. Karl Stewart reckons there are roughly eight hours of gameplay on offer.

The game has no release date, but a simultaneous ship sometime in July or August appears to be the goal.

"The plan is to have a sim-ship, but we won't know until post-E3," Stewart said. "We'll have the game in submission in about two weeks, so it will be complete. It'll be about a month and then it will be up to Microsoft and Sony as to when they want us [the game] to come out.

"Summer is the biggest time for arcade gaming and they [the platform holders] have their time-lines," he added. "For PC we pick the date, but obviously we want to make sure we get as close to sim-ship as possible."

Stewart said Crystal Dynamics has been told July and August are the "two biggest windows for arcade gaming".

I saw some gameplay footage on the G4 site.  It's actually looking pretty fun to me.  Another Arcade game I'll buy and never play.   ;)

Lara Croft a four-week Xbox 360 exclusive

Downloadable Tomb Raider game Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will be exclusively available on the Xbox 360 for at least four weeks.

This is a requirement of all games that are a part of Microsoft's Summer of Arcade promotion, Crystal Dynamics told Eurogamer in a new interview.

Guardian of Light will be released on Xbox Live on 18th August for 1200 Microsoft Points (£10).

Crystal Dynamics hopes the PC and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will be released on Steam and PlayStation Network respectively as soon as the window of exclusivity is up.

"As with all arcade titles, irrespective of platform, you have to go through your submissions before they agree and approve a date. Unlike a disc based title where we can pick our window, you have to go by what the first parties approve and give you a date, to make sure you're not coming out on the same day as five other titles. They like to manage the release window accordingly.

"We have requested a specific date and hopefully we'll get that and it's not too long after the 360 SKU.

"The agreement with Microsoft is, in order to participate in their hugely successful Summer of Arcade promotion, there is a window of exclusivity. That window of exclusivity is a set four weeks."

Other games in Microsoft's Summer of Arcade promotion include Limbo, due out on 21st July and Castlevania Harmony of Despair, which will be released on 4th August.

Crystal Dynamics hopes to have a release date for the PC and PS3 versions of Guardian of Light in "seven to 10 days".

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is Crystal Dynamics' first download-only game. The San Francisco developer took the reigns of the Tomb Raider franchise from Core Design after press mauled Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.

Lara Croft launching without online mode

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will launch for Xbox Live Arcade without its online component, which will follow in a patch at the same time as the PC and PlayStation Network versions in September.

Square Enix also said that it will release five downloadable content packs for the game between October and December, expanding the range of puzzles and even playable characters.

The Guardian of Light is due out on 18th August for XBLA in a one-month timed exclusive deal and will launch with two-player offline co-operative play only.

Then on 28th September Square Enix will deliver the PC and PSN versions, including two-player online play. The XBLA version will be patched on the same day, also receiving leaderboards and voice chat.

Of the five DLC packs, the first three are expansions offering "new puzzle, exploration and combat experiences in the game and new areas to explore", while the last two introduce a pair of "well-known videogame characters" in playable form.

Global brand director Karl Stewart told Joystiq that the decision to release the XBLA version in offline-only form was based on delivering quality.

"If we had launched with online co-op, we wouldn't feel comfortable that it was the best possible experience for the player," he said.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will cost 1200 Microsoft Points (£10.20 / €14.40) on XBLA and $14.99 on both PlayStation Network and PC (Steam).

Lara Croft online co-op delayed again

Square Enix has delayed Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light's online cooperative function for a second time.

It was originally supposed to be available for the game's August Xbox Live Arcade release, but was delayed till the release of the PlayStation Network and PC (via Steam) versions, which launch on the 28th September.

It's now been delayed again, this time to the useful "a later date". We'll pop that in the diary.

We've asked Square Enix if this delay relates to all versions of the game or just the PC and PS3 versions.

More usefully, Square Enix has detailed the downloadable add-on packs it has in store for the game.

From October to December five packs will be made available to download across all formats.

The first three expansion packs feature "a combination of all new puzzle, exploration and combat experiences" and new areas to explore.

The final two are playable character packs, "offering gamers the chance to experience the entire adventure without Lara Croft and Totec and instead with some other well-known videogame characters..." Cryptic.
