Whatever happened to the good old blasting games of yesterday. When all was required was you to run about shooting and nothing like being blown up by a nuclear bomb or having to set fire to some oil with telkinetic powers, whilst hacking a turret and fending off a giant guy in a olde worlde diving suit!

Shellshock gives you just that a game where all you have to do is run and shoot, no more. Doing both is Private Nate, who's brother went missing a month before on a top secret mission looking only to return (28 Days Later) the only survivor and infected with a violent rage disease. In short turn he infects the whole Vietcong and US Forces making a hell hole place to fight.

The gameplay lacks in nothing other than you can run and shoot, it does this rather well and apart from crappy real-time enemy grapples and trap dodging as an annoying diversion the game can be pretty enjoyable. Sticking to what it does well, is giving you minimal bullets and fast enemies that require precise shooting, challenging and frustrating yet even on hard it never quite reaches the devilishness of say Call of Duty Veteran. This is one of two main things that keeps the game from being an average 7/10 game, it's length is incredibley short, around 6 hours gaming on Hard Mode.

The other main factor bringing the game down is it's looks, this is one ugly zombie. The environments aren't too bad, a kind of budget World at War look, they're passable. The character designs are all exactly alike, there's 4 different variations of zombies, 2 VC variations and 2 US variations and they all look exactly the same when you blow their heads into páte. This gives the game a very repetitive streak, without even mentioning the bosses which are exactly alike.

Overall the game isn't as poor as a lot of mags and people would make it out to be, the story is pretty good, with a good mix of run and gun with bullet conservation. It's all let down by a drab look and repetitive use of enemies and allies. If the visuals were a little slicker and the game a little longer this would sit nicely along side lots of other shooter rentals like Fall of Liberty, Legendary etc

However at 6 hours to complete hard mode, and the only reason to play again is a measly 15G Achievement. This is poor even for a rental. I wouldn't recommend you renting this game, let alone renting it. However if in the future you spot this for a £5 or £2 rental, this is an average shooter that you can waste a weekend on. 5/10
