2K signs Jordan for NBA 2K11?

2K Sports may have signed basketball legend Michael Jordan to front NBA 2K11.

The Chicago Bulls and Space Jam star will appear on the box and as a playable character in the game, according to ESPN.

Jordan might not be the only golden oldie making a reappearance, as ESPN reports hearing whispers that his peers (both team-mates and rivals) are being tapped up by 2K. Could we see Pippen, Rodman and Jordan reunited?

The rest of the game's roster probably hopes not.

Also, Jordan's majority stake in the Charlotte Bobcats means this will be the first time a basketball team owner has endorsed the NBA 2KX series of games.

NBA 2K11 hasn't formally been announced, and 2K could not be reached for comment.

Back in April, Operation Sports's MessenjahMatt put together this excellent recreation of famous Michael Jordan performances in NBA 2K10. As Jordan is confirmed to be playable in NBA 2K11, it's potentially a look at what that might entail.

Although 2K Sports was mum on the subject speaking with me (and everyone else), ESPN reported earlier that the studio was approaching other NBA figures for the use of their likenesses. One would have to think some kind of playable career-highlights mode is going to be a part of this - The Shot versus Cleveland, his 63 points against Boston, the switched-hands layup against Los Angeles, etc.

MessenjahMatt (who's done Jordan tributes in 2K10 before) gives us highlights from two Jordan defeats - the 1995 Eastern Conference semifinals against Orlando, and the 1998 Eastern Conference finals against Indiana - followed by one very iconic victory: the championship winner he made in the 1998 NBA Finals against Utah, his last game as a Chicago Bull. The audio in this video comes from Jordan's famous "Failure" ad for Nike. That ad featured no game highlights, just Jordan solemnly entering the arena before a game.

No joke, my first wallet was a Michael Jordan licensed product.  It looked like it was made out of basketball leather, orange with pebbling.

It was truely the ugliest wallet in the world, but to 10-year-old Neato, it was P-I-M-P-ING!   ;D

I also wore Jordan cologne.  I was supergay for the man.  lol

wow, neato, did you have Jordan bedsheets too ?

No.  That would be rediculous.

I had Batman bedsheets.

Lebron James' move to the Miami Heat and how it'll affect NBA 2K11

Late last week, it seemed like the only thing people could talk about on TV, the radio and Twitter was Lebron James. For the uninitiated, he's one of the greatest basketball stars playing today. Wrapping up a lengthy stay in Cleveland with the Cavaliers -- where he's been for the past seven years, since age 18 -- James had finally become a free agent, able to go wherever he wished. As we learned on Thursday night, he chose to join the Miami Heat.

With 2K Sports set to launch the latest iteration in its NBA 2K series, NBA 2K11, on October 5, we got in touch with Chris Snyder, director of marketing for the label, to get his thoughts on the situation. While he admitted that 2K Sports was "not at all" worried about the recent events surrounding James stealing the spotlight from Michael Jordan's signing as this year's cover star, he did admit that James and the teams affected by his decision haven't had their stats finalized in the game just yet.

"It's too early to tell, as the Heat have to fill out the rest of the roster," Snyder said. "The Heat definitely will be improved, and the Cavs will definitely take a hit, but we need to see where everyone else lands before we can determine who is the number one ranked team." (Sports experts currently predict a Celtics-Heat Eastern Conference showdown for the foreseeable future.)

Finally, 2K Sports offered us a lone screenshot which provides us with our first glimpse of James in a Heat uniform (with his new number). We know it's painful to see, Cleveland -- but it's all a part of moving on.

Michael Jordan mode for NBA 2K11

Upcoming basketball game NBA 2K11 has a mode devoted entirely to the most famous basketball player of them all: Michael Jordan.

It's called The Jordan Challenge, and allows players to relive 10 different legendary games from Jordan's career and challenges them to replicate what he did on the court.

Eurogamer has received unconfirmed reports that that bit at the end of Space Jam is one of said legendary games.

Jordan's on the cover of the game, which means he's probably going to get injured soon and miss the entire season. Wait...

"While playing The Jordan Challenge, fans can try to stun the world in Jordan's self-described greatest game by torching the Cavaliers by 69 points in March of 1990; attempt to battle back from the flu to lay waste to the Jazz in Game six of the 1997 finals; or leave the world wanting more as they relive one of Jordan's finest performances during his last game as a Chicago Bull on June 14, 1998.

"In addition to The Jordan Challenge mode, gamers will have the unique opportunity to play as some of the greatest teams in NBA history, including the '85-'86, '89-'90, '90-'91, '94-'95, '95-'96, '96-'97, and '97-'98 Chicago Bulls," said the press release.

NBA 2K11 is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 8th October.

Why can't they have a modern star on the cover? Dwight Howard?
I mean, you would'nt put Rodney Marsh on the latest FIFA now would you?

Howard was on the cover of NBA Live 2010, Kobe on the cover of NBA 2K10, if you manage to sign up the greatest player in the history of the game, a player who has eluded 99% of NBA games in the past you'd pretty much want him on the cover.  It's a pretty big deal.

I'd love Rodney Marsh on the cover of FIFA, he was awesome on Sky, obviously this 'David Beckham has turned down a move to Newcastle United because of trouble with the "Toon Army in Asia" didn't do him any favours.   ;D

Judging by those screenshots it looks as though the 2k series is still leading the way graphically in sports titles. At first i thought that they were real pics! I might have to rent this one or if i see 2k9 or 2k10 cheap i will buy one of those. Not played a basketball game since 2k7, and i enjoyed that.

NBA 2K11 Has A Shoe Fetish

For years, NBA 2K only featured a few pair of authentic Air Jordans in its equipment lineup. That changes with NBA 2K11, featuring His Airness in the game. Twenty-five models are available, and they carry attribute boosts.

Speaking to ESPN.com, producer Erick Boenisch says there will be 40 Nike varieties in the game, 25 of them Jordans, and players will earn them at random. Every couple of hours of gametime, or so, you'll get a new pair at random. "Your timer is always running and shoes are always unlocking."

Rarer varieties will carry bigger attribute boosts. They may be used in any game mode, but they'll be especially useful in the singleplayer career mode and the MJ: Creating A Legend career variant that gives you control of Jordan in today's league.

2K Sports released several screenshots today showing Jordan and his kicks in action, as well as current stars with their shoe models. The screens also showcase new shot varieties that branch out of the game's new animations, such as running across the lane and transitioning into a shot.

NBA center JaVale McGee has had his rating in NBA 2K11 adjusted after he moaned about it.
Washington Wizards center McGee was initially given an overall rating of 59, making him the third worst starting center in NBA 2K11.

He moaned about his rating on Twitter and 2K Sports Community Manager Ronnie Singh responded, saying "alright we are going to give you a rating at least 64. Tell the other guys if they have an issue to hit up @2KSports."

Which is a pretty smart move - if other players start moaning about their rating, it means they'll be talking about NBA 2K11. That's about as good publicity as they can get.

Makes you wonder if any football players would moan about their rating in FIFA 11 or PES 2011...
