Just wondering - and this may have been answered somewhere, if it has, advanced apologies; but I wasn't able to find it via a search -

Is there any sort of [spoiler] tag implemented into the forums?

Not right now.  This summer I'll be upgrading our site to a newer version of SMF, along with some added features like [spoiler] tags.  Thanks for the reminder.   :)

Perhaps a 'Shout Out Box'

Last year when I released my first round of updates, I did add a shoutbox for roughly 1 hour.  It ended up crashing the forum and I had to resurrect a backup.  Fortunately, it was a slow day and I don't think anyone lost any posts.   8)

My fingers are crossed that the new SMF is more stable and add-on friendly.  We'll find out in a few months.   :-X

Cool deal, sent you a PM that may or may not help in the venture. ;)

Months? can't you just go into admin and update it. Or is it a case of you need a free weekend incase you blow us up ?

Free weekend.  It may be as simple as updating the files, but in my experience it's never been that easy due to all of the 'mods' we have installed.

I plan to shutdown the site, make a full backup, and then test a couple different approaches.  Hope it's simple and upload the new SMF update.  When that fails, I'll remove all of our mods, and attempt to update again.  Worst case ... if that doesn't work, I'll remove all mods, export the database, remove the old forum completely, upload an entirely new forum, import the database, and start fresh with an entirely new site with all posts hopefully preserved.  Then I'll test some mods (like shoutbox & spoilers).

If I don't have a 100% free weekend to devote to it, the site will either remain shutdown until the following weekend, or I'll just have to revert the backup which would mean everything I did was a waste of time.

A whole week without the forum?? AMG!!

Give us all due warning so we can go on holiday to a tibetan mountain with no internet, we won't miss anything and can contemplate world peace and dream of Gears of War 4 ;)

I'm not going to let the site be shutdown for a week.  I'll shut it down for 48 hours (at most) sometime later this Summer.  Not anytime soon.
