EA reveals Shadows of the Damned

Veteran developers Suda51 and Shinji Mikami have unveiled their latest project at EA's press conference in Tokyo.

Titled Shadows of the Damned, it's billed as a "psychological action thriller". It's about a bloke called Garcia Hotspur whose true love is abducted by demons and dragged to the underworld. Naturally, he races off to Hell to get her back.

"This game has a punk rock edge to it," said said Resident Evil 4 director Mikami. "You can see Suda's trademark flair and style everywhere in this game. There are lots of light moments as well."

"But of course, you can see a lot of influence from Mikami-san in the core gameplay mechanics," No More Heroes creator Suda51 chimed in.

"This game is really intense, however you also see some light moments as well. It's a very dark game. And it's one of the greatest games I've ever worked on in my lifetime."

During the speech, still images from the game were shown on the big screen. One depicted some sort of giant horse with a human face being ridden by a demon and giving off loads of sparks. There were also shots of Garcia, who appears to be into studs, leather and big guns with skulls on, and has a big scar down one side of his face.

After this press conference attendees got to watch a trailer in which our hero whacked loads of monsters in the face, declaring, "My name is Garcia Hotspur, hunter of demons."

Other trailer highlights included a hot chick with no top on, another hot chick wielding dual weapons, giant horned demons, spooky lighting and an absinthe vending machine.

Shadows of the Damned, which Suda51 asked gamers to shorten to Damned or abbreviated to DMD, is slated for a summer 2011 release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Sort of Resident Evil / Dark Sector mesh with a big supernatural spin.

Could be win, could be fail.  I'll reserve my interest until we see more.   :-X

According to a few preview snippets / blurbs I've seen online, this game is apparently full of goofy fun and cheap laughs.  I doublt I'll be buying this day one, but it's on my 'when I get around to it' list.

Shadows of the Damned's Johnson based on IT Crowd's Moss
"Have you tried forcing an unexpected reboot?"

This isn't exactly regular news, but we were tickled by it, and we think you'll be tickled too. Shadows of the Damned's garrulous transforming skull-weapon Johnson is, despite his physical appearance, based on a character from classic Brit comedy The IT Crowd.

The character in question is Moss, hairy super-nerd, budding inventor and Street Countdown pro. Grasshopper Manufacture's Goichi "Suda51" Suda singled Moss out for skull-ification before the game was localised for UK audiences.

"Johnson was based on the character of Moss from the UK TV show, The IT Crowd," he told OXM US in an interview. Localisation team boss John Ricciardi added: "humour was definitely a major ingredient from the start - the game is obviously very self-aware, so we tried to preserve and enhance that."

A horror-comedy that delivers gore and penis jokes in equal quantities, Shadows of the Damned is dripping with references to movies, TV and entertainment culture at large. "As far as influences go, our writer Brian Gray puts it best: the game is basically 'Evil Dead with a Mexican in hell.' So as you can imagine, Evil Dead and Army of Darkness and the like were big influences on the writing."

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alAdWYlKW7M" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alAdWYlKW7M</a>

The Moss rip-off picked up his not-at-all suggestive handle in transit from East to West. "This was something Grasshopper had going before we got involved, so we just ran with it. We actually gave Johnson his name; he used to be called Dokuro [Japanese for "skull"], but seeing as how that meaning would've been lost on Westerners anyway, we suggested changing it to better fit the game's...phallic themes."

Despite its charming dabs of Brit humour, Shadows of the Damned didn't sell so well over here. It deserved better. Disagree? Well prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame, set at gas mark "egg on your face"! We sort of forget what we were talking about.
