Rumour: 343 developing Halo remake
To be released in 2011

The latest issue of GamesMaster has some interesting "industry chatter" surrounding the Halo franchise. The magazine states that Microsoft's internal Halo-centric studio, 343 Industries, will be remaking the original title in the franchise.

This remake would be running in the Halo: Reach engine and could be with us by the end of 2011. With Microsoft eager to turn Halo into an annual series, this seems like a relatively cheap and easy way of getting another game out in time for next Christmas.

GamesMaster reports that this would pave the way for a full Halo sequel -- the first non-Bungie developed game in the franchise -- to be released in late 2012.

With Sony having seen great success in remastering PS2 titles such as God of War and Sly Cooper, it makes perfect sense for Microsoft to make their own attempt. Not to mention the fact that fans have been asking for a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved since the first screenshots of Halo 3 were revealed.

Hopefully we'll see official confirmation of this soon.

As a fanboy it only has to have Halo in the name! Even if it was Halo Kitten Rescue, they'd have my moneyz!

An remastered compilation of Halo 1 & 2 would sell.  I probably wouldn't buy it since I played those games to death.

Now if they took those resources and put them to remastering ALL of the multiplayer maps from all of the previous Halo games for Halo Reach, I'd buy that.

Achievements would make me want to play through them again.   :)

Report: Halo remake out this year, developed by Saber Interactive

Joystiq is reporting that the rumoured Halo: Combat Evolved remake is not only real, but they know who's making it and when it will be released. Allegedly it's being created by TimeShift developers Saber Interactive and you'll be able to get your hands on it on November 15 this year. A full ten years after the original release on Xbox.

It's being completely remade, rather than simply upscaled with improved textures like Beyond Good And Evil HD, with completely new art assets and "is expected" to suppoer 1080p resolution and stereoscopic 3D. It will also "likely" feature an online co-op mode.

Joystiq seems pretty confident in their information, but obviously we can't start getting properly excited until we hear official confirmation from Microsoft. Hopefully we hear something soon.

Halo Anniversary Kinect support confirmed

Microsoft Game Studios corporate vice-president Phil Spencer has confirmed that 343 Industries' tasty-looking Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary will support Kinect.

The remark slipped out during an interview with Gamespot. "Core focus for us in our press briefing this year with Kinect actually came from two sides," Spencer explained.

"As a first-party, we believe that Kinect will be important to all genres of games, be it racing games with Forza, combat games like Ryse. Even games like Halo Anniversary has Kinect integration."

Spencer wouldn't reveal the precise nature of Anniversary's Kinect functionality, but his comments (also to Gamespot) last week may serve as some indication.

"It's not a mandate that everything we do in first party has to support Kinect right now. But I will say, specifically with voice, that there are some things that just seem to make navigating and playing games so much easier...that I would guess the answer will be yes in the end that you'll see all first-party games using some form of Kinect functionality."

Voice control is the one feature we can imagine gelling naturally with Combat Evolved's gunplay. Imagine ordering UNSC marines to dig in behind a tank as you trundle towards the Covenant lines, or having them distract Elites while you circle round to a turret.

Halo Anniversary Kinect features "optional"
"Core gameplay experience" unaffected

Whatever form they take, the mysterious Kinect features 343 Industries has planned for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary will be optional, the studio has confirmed.

News that the game will support Kinect had some fans' nerves jangling earlier this week, but a community manager for 343 popped up on the Halo Waypoint forums yesterday to offer a little reassurance.

"Just to let everybody know, the Kinect features we're exploring with Halo: Anniversary are optional and won't affect your core gameplay experience," read the post.

"Our mission, from day one, has been to deliver a faithful recreation of the original game, and we remain dedicated to seeing that through to completion."

The new take on the decade-old FPS classic lands on Xbox 360 on 15th November.
