Eddie Murphy quits as Oscars host following Brett Ratner departure

Eddie Murphy has followed his friend director Brett Ratner ("Tower Heist") out the door of the Kodak Theater. Ratner resigned as co-producer of the Oscars on Tuesday after his conduct was called into question following his use of the term "fags" and a tasteless interview with shock jock Howard Stern.

In making the annoucement of Murphy's departure Wednesday, academy president Tom Sherak said, "I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well."

In the statement, Murphy said, "First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

Gotta be Ricky to replace him   :)

Morgan Freeman Wins Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Award

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's board of directors has named Morgan Freeman recipient of the 2012 Cecil B. DeMille Award, the HFPA announced on Wednesday.

The DeMille is the HFPA's lifetime achievement award, and in the past has gone to Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Warren Beatty, Anthony Hopkins and Alfred Hitchcock, among others.

The embattled organization staged a press conference and brought in two celebrities, actress Amy Adams and director Pedro Almodovar, to make the announcement of the single award.

"Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman is one of the most recognizable figures in American cinema," read the HFPA press release announcing the selection. "His works are among the most critically and commercially successful films of all time and Freeman himself ranks 10th among worldwide top-grossing actors of all time."

Freeman will receive his honor at the 69th Annual Golden Globes ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, January 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is currently embroiled in one lawsuit with its former publicist, and another dispute with Dick Clark Productions over the rights to produce its lucrative annual broadcast.

If Eddie Murphy really wanted to make a "comeback" statement, he should've taken the hosting job and started dropping "Raw"1987-era pipebombs on stage. I believe this has been the knock against him in the last 10+ years or so. A loss of some kind of edge that made him relevant at one point.
