Final Fantasy XIII-2 announced
Sequel heading to Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2011

Square Enix has announced the much-rumoured Final Fantasy XIII-2.

The RPG sequel will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 THIS YEAR, and is being directed by FFXIII head Motomu Toriyama, the publisher's confirmed.

A trailer was shown at Square Enix's 1st Production Department Premier press conference in Japan this morning, in which FFXIII protagonist Lightning crossed swords with an unknown, purple-haired character.

Rumours started swirling regarding a possible follow-up earlier this month, when Square-Enix registered a domain name for XIII-2.

The last Final Fantasy game to receive a direct sequel was Final Fantasy X, which saw a follow-up which reused numerous character models, environments and audio.

The Final Fantasy XIII-2 trailer will be available for viewing on the official site from January 20.

Square Enix also announced Final Fantasy Type-0 for PSP, which is actually the renamed Agito XIII.

That's cool ... maybe.  Was FFX-2 any good?

I just got FFXIII from a cheapassgamer.com trade.  If XIII-2 gets a lot of positive fanfare, I'll try to finish XIII sometime this year.   #)

Final Fantasy XIII-2 darker than X-2

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be a darker tale than Final Fantasy X-2, the last direct Final Fantasy sequel, according to Square Enix comments reported in Dengeki (thanks Siliconera).

Final Fantasy X-2, released around two years after FFX on PS2, followed X's Yuna and her friends Rikku and Paine in more of an action-adventure style than usual, a move that proved intriguing to some but still divisive.

XIII-2 sounds as though it will stick closer to the XIII template in combat terms, although some changes to the battle system will be unveiled later in development.

So far we've seen a picture of FFXIII protagonist Lightning in the new game, although she will be joined by other characters, who won't all be exactly as we remember them. Dengeki also said that the goddess Etro will be a central figure in XIII-2.

Easy mode, from Final Fantasy XIII Ultimate Hits International, may be introduced to the sequel, and Square Enix said it has listened to feedback on the story, interface and characters since Final Fantasy XIII's release last March.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is due out for PS3 and Xbox 360 in PAL territories this winter.
