Rage is a brand new IP for id Software (of Doom and Quake fame), this all-new title utilizes the company's unique id Tech 5 technology, aiming to incomparable new levels of graphic presentation in artistic expression and graphic fidelity. Rage offers high-intensity battling and racing gameplay, offering the complexity of race track dynamics and tactics (including a monetary system where you can invest winnings from races to improve your vehicles and character) and the action of a FPS when you take to foot in combat scenarios.

PS3 Version Of Rage Has Some Catching Up To Do

What's this? A predominantly PC-oriented developer (in this instance id) having trouble getting a game (in this instance Rage) running well on the PS3? You do. Not. Say.

In what's becoming a frustrating norm for PS3 owners, id's John Carmack has told Edge magazine that while the PC and 360 versions of Rage are running at a smooth 60 frames per second, the PS3 version is managing barely half that, clocking in at only 20-30 fps.

"The PS3 lags a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it," Carmack explains. "The rasteriser is just a little bit slower - no two ways about that."

"The RSX is slower than what we have in the 360. The CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that's what a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3".

Shame. You'd think nearly three years into the console's lifespan, someone would have figured out a way around this by now. Unless, you know, there is no way around it.

The PS3 has been getting a lot of grief lately.  Not from fanboys, but from the actual industry they're a part of.

I hope the PS3 still has strong support from developers by the time they lower the price.  I want to buy one, but not if Activision and other companies stop supporting it.   :-\

GC: Rage may contain separate MP disc

Single-player and multiplayer could be split up across two separate DVDs.

id Software president Todd Hollenshead has revealed that the developers might split Rage across two DVDs.

While he says it "will probably have two DVDs", the issue is how to split the game across them and Hollenshead thinks he's found a good answer.

"We'll probably have two DVDs for sure, and then the question is, will multiplayer be on a separate disc or not? It makes no sense for a player to swap that disc in multiplayer, right? That's fail. They have to keep one disc in during multiplayer, can you just put all the multiplayer content on one DVD?"

However, he almost admits that Rage might be pushing towards three disc territory.

Rage To Feature Classic id Weapons

id Software's creative director has unveiled new details on the studio's upcoming post-apocalyptic FPS/combat racing hybrid

Discussing the history of id Software's classic FPS arsenal, Tim Willits told Total PC Gaming: "Rage will feature many of the classic id Software weapons of the past, along with some new and unique Rage weapons as well. We are focusing not only on great weapons, but on engineering items that will add to the variety of gameplay. We will also have multiple ammo types available for a number of the weapons."

So chainsaws, lightning guns and BFGs all the way then? Like many other recent titles the game will also embrace its multi-genre approach with elements not found in id's previous work. "Rage also has an economy where you are allowed to choose how you spend your money earned through combat and racing," Willits confirmed. "You might decide you love the wingstick (a boomerang-cum-shuriken weapon) and stock up on them, or you may feel inclined to purchase parts to build more sentry bots or to keep your armour upgraded and repaired."

Rage will be published by Bethesda, EA out of the picture

In a tersely worded press release, ZeniMax Media – parent company of Fallout 3-dev Bethesda Softworks and, as of June, FPS hall-of-famer id Software – has "announced today that it has picked up the publishing rights for Rage, the video game under development at id Software." First announced in July 2008 during Electronic Arts' E3 press conference, Rage was to be published under EA's successful EA Partners program, home to other major titles from outside developers, like Rock Band, Left 4 Dead 2, and Brutal Legend.

Unlike ZeniMax's other development studio, Bethesda, id Software will not be self-publishing Rage; instead, "Rage will be published by Bethesda Softworks," the press release states. It concludes, "As a result, Electronic Arts Inc. ... will not be involved in the sales and marketing of Rage. The ongoing development of Rage is unaffected by this development."

With EA out of the picture and publishing duties for Rage in ZeniMax's hands, the partnership between the two companies can finally be consummated without having to wait for Doom 4, or whatever's next in the Wolfenstein franchise. Ah, love.

Woohoo!

Bethesda is slowly becoming the next Publishing Giant.  Over the past few years they have been aquiring a lot of lone IPs, although some have not reviews very well.

It's good to see Bethesda stretching its territory.  Hopefully it's good for Bethesda.   :-X

I liked WET which they published, a Bethesda non-RPG ... loved it.

Impressions: RAGE

RAGE is a gorgeous game. The Xbox 360 version of id's post-apocalyptic shooter, running at 60 frames per second, stunned at a recent Bethesda event, and removed any doubts as to whether the idTech 5 engine would hold up nearly three years after the game's unveiling.

RAGE's story starts in the near future: a giant asteroid is heading towards Earth, and rather than launch a team of wacky oil-rig drillers at the problem, the governments of the world convene and decide to put most of the population into suspended animation and bury them beneath the surface in giant Arks. Years later, you're revived as the sole survivor of your malfunctioning Ark. I watched a hands-off demonstration a bit further along into the game, but there will be a brief tutorial during your revival process.

You emerge from your slumber into a post-apocalyptic wasteland (of course!) wearing an Ark jumpsuit (sound familiar?). Far more people have survived the asteroid strike than originally projected, and society has tried to rebuild itself haphazardly. The world is desolate and populated by mutants, raiders and peaceful humans just trying to make a living. There's new "government" in charge called the Authority -- and you're not going to like them.

After heeding the advice of a crazy coot -- "watch out for bad guys" ... um, thanks? -- and engaging in some brief pistoleering with local raiders, my nameless adventurer hopped into an armed dune buggy and sped off across the blistering sands. Along the way, I engaged in some gunplay with other armed vehicles (which quickly devolved into a who-can-turn-faster race; just like aerial dogfighting), and proceeded onto Well Spring, a shantytown built up around one of the few sources of clean water in the area.

There's a distinct Firefly vibe (replete with country 'n twang soundtrack) as you enter the town, where you're urged by a local to seek out Jackie Weeks. "Just look for the big inflatable gorilla!" Yes, some things from our world have unfortunately survived, including giant novelty car dealership balloons. You can shop at various vendors, talk to locals, and soak up the local color on your way to the next objective. There's a car mechanic in town too, and you can compete in the local races to win "racing certificates" that can be redeemed for repairs and mods to your car.

Your character has access to different engineering plans, and you'll encounter more throughout the game. These allow you to cobble together spare parts into different, useful items like a sentry bot with a mounted gun, a remote-control bomb car and personal turrets. You can also reclaim these items after usage. If they are undamaged, they just go back into your inventory, and if not, you'll get them back as parts. My demo guide tried to set up three stationary turrets to deal with a small group of bandits, but the trio of guns were flanked and quickly taken out. This was supposedly unplanned, but it showed off some smart AI that won't just charge blindly at you (and will take cover when it's appropriate).

You'll have access to a large number of weapons in RAGE, along with multiple types of ammunition for each gun, like electro-shock bolts. You select both weapons and ammo through pop-up radial menus. These looked a little confusing during their brief appearances during my demo, so they'll probably take a bit of getting used to. In contrast, you'll probably be quite accustomed to the game's regenerative health (thanks, nanotechnology!), given an interesting twist in the form of an 11th-hour "defib" opportunity. Provided it's fully charged up, the nanobots can bring you back to life and deal damage to the enemies in the nearby area. It takes time to regenerate, however, so getting killed without it will send you back to the last automatic or manual save.

RAGE won't be out until 2011, but it's already showing a lot of promise. The visuals alone make it stand out, and I'm eager to explore more of its new, wild world. id is also adding exclusive co-op modes and has "ambitious" plans for multiplayer -- we'll learn more about those in the future.

I saw G4's Talkabout podcast last night.  They could not praise this game enough.  Apparently it's going to revolutionize enemy A.I.

Who ever thought it would be ID, the guys who invented enemies that just run right at you, who would revolutionize enemy AI?
