Rein: Epic "owns" Gears IP, "can do what we want with it"

Epic's Mark Rein has said that the developer owns the Gears of War IP, and can do with it what it pleases.

Speaking with VG247 at GDC last week, we asked Rein to clarify for some of the more paranoid out there, whether or not Microsoft had some nefarious hand in the developer's cookie jar.

Turns out, that's not the case as some mistakenly believe. Epic can, and do choose whatever publisher it wishes for the games it creates.

"We own Gears of War. We can do what we want with it," Rein told us. "We have a great relationship with Microsoft, and they helped turn the game into a huge success for us, and we are pretty happy with the way things are going".

This backs up a comment Rein made on our site back in January, when analyst Michael Pachter offered the opinion that Epic "regretted" making the Gears series exclusive to Xbox 360.

Further proof that Epic works with publishers other than Microsoft, is the People Can Fly shooter rumored as Bulletstorm, which is being published by EA.

"I mean we have a game with EA, and while we haven't announced it yet, and soon we will be able to talk more about it."

Hopefully, it will be announced at E3, which Rein says will be exciting for the developer.

Gears 3 will be Microsoft exclusive and i think after that anymore will be multi-platform, i'm not sure about Gears 4 ... may never happen.

I like it when common sense is a news story.  Makes me feel warm and squishy.   :P

Gears of War 3 due April 2011
US reports also suggest that the game will be officially confirmed next month.

Gears of War 3 will be released in April 2011, reports Edge.

Word is that Epic could have released Gears of War 3 this year but publisher Microsoft wants to avoid the game clashing with Halo: Reach or Natal's launch at Christmas.

Edge also says that the first teaser movie, where Epic will officially confirm that Gears of War 3 is in development, will hit next mnth on April 8th - one year ahead of the intended release date.

We've got to wait a whole year? That sucks! Still, it may give me time to reach level 100 on Gears 2!!!  ;)

Thank god for the new Tomb Raider, helped me de-stress after a tough week! More of the same please

Killzone 3 vs. Gears 3 in April 2011?

Epic Games is preparing Gears of War 3 for release in April 2011 and that's also roughly when Killzone 3 will come out, at least according to a pair of rumours swirling around the internet overnight.

Edge reports that the third instalment in Epic's Xbox 360 shooter series will be unveiled in a trailer on 8th April 2010, and will then receive a fuller reveal at E3 this June ahead of an April 2011 launch.

That's according to a "trusted US publishing source" who claimed that the decision to duck out of the Q4 2010 warzone is down to Microsoft's wish to provide Project Natal and Halo: Reach space to breathe.

Meanwhile, 1UP claims that Edge's April launch for Gears 3 will put the game head to head with Killzone 3, which it says it has heard will be released in the "same timeframe".

Neither Microsoft nor Sony has addressed the rumours, beyond labelling them as such, but earlier this week Epic president Mike Capps noted in an interview that E3 could be "really exciting for fans of Epic".

Gears of War 2 was released in November 2008, while Killzone 2 launched in late February 2009.

Only one winner if the games do go head to head and thats Gears 3, it took 2 months for Killzone 2 to sell 1 million copies Worldwide, just 2 days for Gears 2  ;D
