First Gears Of War 3 Gameplay Details

Gears Of War 3 will shake up the franchise's acclaimed cover system and feature underwater missions for the first time, Edge can reveal.

Developer Epic Games is set to evolve the combat by introducing new Locust foes with tentacle-like appendages which are capable of extending to player cover spots.

Meanwhile, the COG members of Delta Squad will be equipped with explosives that can travel beneath the ground to take out enemy cover positions, our US publishing source told us.

While the first two Gears games offered mobile cover in the form of objects like burnt out cars that could be pushed around, Gears Of War 3 will feature a heavy duty mech suit the COGs can utilise both for protection and to wreak havoc.

All of these new features will be present in the singleplayer campaign and multiplayer modes, Edge understands.

We were also informed that the game will be set during the summer and introduce a number of new environments to the series, including underwater locations. The end of the last title saw the COGs sink mankind's last city, Jacinto, and flood the Hollow in order to take out the Locust Horde beneath the surface.

Epic's Unreal Engine 3 demo at GDC in March showed off jungle or foliage-heavy areas, which could also make an appearance in Gears Of War 3 - Epic previously used GDC 2008 to debut Unreal Engine upgrades that went on to show up in Gears 2.

Gears Of War: Jacinto's Remnant, a novel written in conjunction with Epic, continues the Gears story from the conclusion of the second game. One story strand focuses on the island of Vectes, a former COG naval base sporting fertile lowlands, forests and a river. This setting could be ideal to show off the developer's new Unreal Engine features were it to show up in Gears Of War 3.

Gears Of War 3 has yet to be officially announced. However, Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski is set to reveal a new game on Monday's episode of US talk show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and it could be on the agenda. He was originally set to appear on tonight's show - the same day we predicted Gears Of War 3 would officially be unveiled – but said that the change in schedule would allow Epic "to take a couple more days to polish" its game.

We've contacted Microsoft for comment on this report.

Gears of War 3 Officially Announced for April 2011

Hot on the heels of today's leaked Gears of War 3 gameplay details, comes a premature official announcement for Epic's gun-toting threequel. Still no solid details as yet, but if US Xbox 360 owners switch on their consoles, they'll see the image below looking straight at them.

It simply says, "The epic story concludes April 2011". You can't click on it, or do anything with it, it's just there looking at you.

Looks like MS forgot to move the announcement to Monday, as Epic's Cliff Bleszinski was supposed to be revealing something on last night's Jimmy Fallon show (podgy -faced pop gimp Justin  Bieber replaced him. Puke, vomit etc), which was widely believed to be Gears of War 3, before the appearance was shifted to this coming Monday.

Or maybe this is an indication that Bleszinski's big reveal on Monday's Jimmy Fallon will be something completely different. More than likely not, though. It will almost definitely be Gears 3. We'd bet our gold-plated Lancers on it.

Here's the trailer for the "worst-kept secret in the video game industry," posted to the Late Night website ... before it's appeared on television. The trailer is prefaced by some banter with Mister B about his vintage Nintendo Power appearance and what makes a great game.

The new game has playable female soldiers in it! Take that, Crackdown 2! Don't worry, it's still jam-packed with men who look like refrigerators, and mellow music like the famous Gears of War trailer (in this case, Sun Kil Moon's "Heron Blue".) Other elements mentioned by Cliff include new weapons and new aliens -- "crazy tentacle monsters" with mutating ability. Bleszinski said GOW3 will arrive "probably around April 8" -- one year after his Late Night appearance was supposed to be shown. Wouldn't that have been nice marketing? Oh, well

Shame it's not November this year like usual but at least we finally know it's coming, can't wait to get hold of that double barrel shotty 
E3 should be a belter now, we should get some gameplay footage, let the hype begin!!!

Features

* Rod Fergusson confirmed 4 Player Co-Op in the Gears IRC, with 4 unique characters. Rod confirmed that co-op includes Marcus, Dom, Cole, Baird and a "variety of other characters"

Story

* Set 18 months after Gears of War 2, and after the fourth Gears of War book
* The location shown in the "Ashes to Ashes" trailer is a location nicknamed 'Char', where the remains of victims from the Hammer of Dawn strikes are heavily present.

Weapons

* The Pendulum Lancer is in Gears of War 3
* A Double Barrelled Shotgun was spotted in the Ashes to Ashes trailer.

Characters

* Dom is now heavily bearded. According to Rod, this is due to his problems dealing with the loss of his wife.
* Anya is the female COG soldier seen in the "Ashes to Ashes" trailer. We will learn more on her transition from pencil pusher to soldier throughout the books.

Enemies

* Lambent Locust: These enemies mutate and transform as you fight them.
