Gears of War 3 screenshots in
Mechs, multiplayer maps and new enemies

The first proper Gears of War 3 gameplay screenshots have arrived via scans of a Russian magazine, that's seemingly bagged itself a world exclusive.

The images show, among other things, multiplayer maps, new enemies, big guns and the new members of the Gears team you'll be hurtling into concrete slabs. We can't wait for this.

Mr. Cliff Bleszinski spilled the first proper gameplay details for the third game last month, including confirmation of four-player co-op, an intertwining story and lots of new guns.

More soon.

More news  :)

Gears of War 3 gameplay details are HUGE
Dynamic arenas, new enemies and defending tomato patches...

New Gears of War 3 gameplay details have arrived, via the pages of a Russian magazine that appeared on the internet this morning. Prepare for a BIG read...

According to the mag, the third Gears has humanity in pieces, split into tribes and fighting for their survival. After flooding the last human city, Marcus and Dom have taken refuge on an aircraft carrier called Raven's Nest (which you can see in the above post), on which the game kicks off.

Quickly COG overlord Prescott lands on the Raven's Nest and drops the revelation that Marcus's father is still alive - and he's discovered a way to save humanity.

Here's the best bit: Marcus and co will occasionally have to defend the Raven's Nest from attack to protect their tomato patch (no, that's not a dodgy translation) as food's a bit scarce in their version of Kevin Costner's Waterworld.

With the Locust also kicked out of their homes and driven off by the mutated Lambent, the main enemy in Gears 3 is the latter. According to the Russian mag The Lambet are able to battle two-to-three Gears at the same time and once they're close to death they'll charge and explode on the nearest Human.

As our colleagues at Edge exclusively revealed, they've also got giant tentacles for reaching over cover - and these remain active even after they die.

But story rubbish out of the way, here's the stuff you're really interested in - guns; Gears 3 is set to include several inventive new killing tools, top of which is a grenade launcher that fires organic earth drilling grenades. After firing, your payload burrows through the earth, underneath your targets cover and explodes - a bit like a subterranean mortar.

We already know about the Pendulum Lancer - the predecessor to the chainsaw version - but one interesting addition we don't have much info on is the DB Shotgun, a double-barreled boomstick that takes a "long time to reload" and can only hold two shells at a time, the trade-off being that you can fire them both at the same time for massive damage.

There are three types of grenade in the third game; frag, smoke and ignitable - and they can be combined. For example lobbing an ignitable grenade followed by a frag will create a fiery hell in a closed environment.

Gears of War 3's new Lost Planet-style mech is apparently called the Silver-Back and carries a heft machine gun (infinite ammo) and grenade launcher (limited ammo). According to Russia, the Silver-Back is well protected from the front but not so much from behind.

Excitingly, almost every gun in Gears of War 3 will have it own unique execution move, from throat-slashing bayonet kills with the Pendulum Lancer, to a neck-breaking shotgun, head-squishing mortar and a flame thrower that can set people on fire... from the INSIDE.

If you have a meatshield, you can now shove a grenade incide the captive Locust's armour and kick him towards a crowd of baddie - Sparta style.

On the multiplayer front environments now constantly shift and crumble during battles, which you can somewhat see in action via these scans. In Gears of War 3 players can also swap ammo and weapons, which is bound to solve a lot of the mortar squabbling from games past.

... aaaand breath. Many thanks go to Russian man 'Razor605' of the Epic forums for translating these. We very much look forward to seeing Gears 3 with our own eyes soon.

Bleszinski dismisses Gears of War 3 leaks

Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski has urged gamers not to take leaked information about Gears of War 3 too seriously.

Yesterday scans of a Russian magazine's Gears 3 preview appeared on the internet, and spoiler-filled translations followed.

"Please don't trust badly translated leaked scanned info on Gears 3. Lots of false info out there," Bleszinski tweeted.

"Gears 3 is nothing like Waterworld, my friends, you're doing it wrong. The Raven's Nest is only one level," he added.

The Raven's Nest is a reference to a giant man-made island built out of warships, which was pictured in the scans.

According to translations, most of the game would take place on and beneath it - the point Bleszinski seemed to dispute.

The translated details also made claims - spoilers ahead - about the game's story and equipment.

Apparently we should expect Marcus Fenix, Dom and Cole to be joined by a now battle-hardened Anya and Marcus' dad, Adam.

The details - gathered by Kotaku prior to the translation thread's deletion on the Epic forums - also mentioned mechs called Silverbacks and refined difficulty levels.

The article reportedly also said to expect more stories in the Gears world following its release, with Gears 3 set to complete Marcus' story.

Gears of War 3 was unveiled last month, has a four-player co-op campaign and the story will be written by Gears novelist Karen Traviss.

The game's due out on 8th April 2011.

Gears of War 3: 'Insane will live up to its name'
Cliff Bleszinski says that Casual difficulty will be even easier than before.

Gears of War 3 won't be easier, lead designer Cliff Bleszinski told CVG as he cleared up more of the rumours doing the rounds.

One of the rumours was that Gears of War 3 will be easier than the previous two games in the series. However, lead designer Cliff Bleszinski says this isn't the case.

"[The] game won't be easier, Hardcore and Insane will certainly live up to their names," he said. "It's just that Casual will be even easier."

How can Casual be even easier? You could complete Casual in previous games by meleeing your way through the entire game. Will it fire your guns for you? Will it just not include any enemies? Guess we'll find out in April 2011...

Across both games, Insane has been easy, except for maybe Raam at the end of the first game, Gears 2 Insane was shockingly easy, so hopefully Gears 3 is at least 3 or 4 times more difficult.
