Could the Gears of War franchise finally be getting its first playable female character? ...maybe. It's the weekend, "real" news doesn't happen.

Speaking with 1 vs. 100 LIVE host Chris Cashman during the August 1st live game, Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski, better known to gamers as "Cliffy B", "The Cliffster" and "Captain Snugglepuff" was asked if gamers could ever expect to play as a female character in a Gears of War game. Cliff's answer, in short, was that he could not comment on "possible aspects" of a game that "may or may not" be in development.

Typical.

However he did quickly follow that comment by mentioning the female Gear that is sitting on the head of a slain Brumak (image above) for the cover of a Gears of War comic book and saying that she "may or may not" be involved in any "as-yet-unannounced" video game projects.

Now we all know there is going to be a Gears of War 3. It hasn't been announced officially yet, but considering how incredibly popular the first two were, a third one is inevitable.

Not a rumour, but still worth a look, someone has created his own Gears 3 box, complete with disc & manual, and posted it on youtube, he has too much time on his hands, though i quite like the image on the back.

sambo

Read the comments under the video ;D. People think it's the real deal. The bloke has done a good job though.

theres another vid on youtube showing how he did it too, the image of Marcus on the front is from the Limited Edition PC version.
Raam being in Gears 3 would be pretty cool, Skorge has to be back too.

I was surprised that they didn't include a female character at least for Horde mode in Gears 2.

If they do release a female character ...               DIBS!   ;)

dibs on the girl, girls always die last in the movies.

The black guy will go first, then the kid, then the gambler, then the girl.

just found this article via news4gamers, what do you think?

Should Gears of War 3 be held off for the next Xbox?

The Gears of War series has been a huge success for the Xbox 360. However, some were left a little disappointed with Gears of War 2, in particular with the multiplayer mode. The impact that the original Gears of War had on this generation was huge as it was the first game that truly showed off just what could be done with the new hardware and set the standard in graphics for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It also introduced a well implemented cover system which other shooters have tried to replicate. The original was also a massive boost for Microsoft's Xbox Live service as it was the number one played game on Xbox Live for quite some time and still gets played regularly today.

With the Xbox 360 still selling well and with so many good games planned for the next 6-12 months, can Microsoft afford the luxury of holding off on releasing Gears of War 3 till the launch of the new Xbox?

If Microsoft did this, it would surely upset a lot of Xbox 360 owners, especially the Gears of War fans who would be looking forward to playing Gears of War 3 on the Xbox 360's. However, with a new console surely to be released in the not too distant future, giving Epic the extra development time would hopefully enable them to create something truly special which would be a great launching pad for Microsoft's next console release.

You just have to imagine the excitement if Microsoft announced at E3 2010 that a new Xbox is in full development (as if it isn't already!) and will be released in the fall of 2011 with none other than Gears of War 3 heading up the launch titles! This could well be the announcement that gives Microsoft the edge in the next line of consoles. Would this happen? Maybe, maybe not. Would this be a clever decision by Microsoft or the decision that leads to Sony being number one again? Only time will tell.

Next Gears may be on next-gen consoles

Update: Epic Games president Michael Capps claims he misspoke during a Q&A session at the Tokyo Game Show today when he said, "If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation, whenever that is."

Speaking to Eurogamer after the event, Capps explained that if the next Gears of War - assuming there is one - were to be released in the next "four to five years", it would be for current consoles.

Were it to be based on Unreal Engine 4, however, it would have to come out on the next round of consoles, because those are the machines for which Epic is targeting its next generation of money-spinning engine technology.

"If we ship a game in the next few years, it'll be Unreal Engine 3. If we ship a game on next [generation] consoles, it will likely be Unreal Engine 4," he told Eurogamer.

Original Story: Epic Games president Michael Capps has said that if there's a third Gears of Wars game, it will be released on next-gen consoles.

Capps' comments came in a Q&A session following his speech at the Tokyo Game Show. He began by confirming that Epic has been working on Unreal Engine 4 for the past seven years in preparation for the next hardware generation.

"We're very concerned that the next generation will be massively parallel and most engines won't be able to adapt for that," said Capps.

"If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation, whenever that is. If someone knows, please tell me! That's about four or five years away, I think."

Also during the session, Capps said that it cost less to make Gears of War 2 than the original game. Although the team working on the sequel was larger, the development time was shorter. "We've managed to keep our expenses down significantly," he said. "We hear about 25 million dollar game budgets and that sort of thing... Epic's not like this."

According to Capps, around 50 or 60 Epic staff members work on each game - compared to reports of around 400 for Assassin's Creed. "It's a great game and it's very big," he said, "But we try to keep focused on a smaller game with lots of quality."

Capps went on to observe that producing its own engine gives both Epic and other companies an advantage. "Every game developer wishes they had time to invest in better tools... We invest a lot in making our content teams more effective, and we can do that because we're making hundreds of other teams effective too."

We've had a pair with the Carmine Brothers and when the 3rd Carmine shows up in Gears 3 we'll have that chick off Total Recall that makes a guy wish he had 3 hands  :)

Kill the rumour, next Gears will still be an Xbox 360 exclusive

If you follow gaming news, you can't get away from it. Countless rumors and speculation all hoping to see the Xbox 360 blockbuster title war over to the PS3. It's not going to happen so let's kill the rumor. Here's why.

We'll start with the old and end with the new. The rumor train was ignited when Epic Games boss, Mark Rein said at TGS, "If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation." After his statement, the gaming media began speculation on what he meant. Some said Mr. Rein was hinting at a multiplatform release for the next title and others thought he meant the next cycle of consoles. Both assumptions were wrong.

After those remarks sent the internet into an upheaval, Eurogamer met up with Mark asking him to clarify himself. Mr. Rein then made it perfectly clear and said he misspoke and if Gears of War three existed and were to be released in the next four to five years, it would indeed be on this generation of consoles. Note, he never said a multiplatform release, but this the seventh generation of consoles.

Four to five years actually makes sense as this generation is shaping up to be the longest running in the history of the industry. Microsoft and Sony have yet to make a profit on their respective systems and no one wants to go full throttle into another generation without at least recouping what was lost. It's only common sense; Microsoft is set to release Project Natal which according to them will be launched as if it were a next gen console, and Sony will release the Wand sometime in spring of next year all in an effort to lengthen the life of both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Rein wanted everyone to know that Gears of War 3 will be on the software giant's flagship console. Why? Because it don't make sense to jump ship, leave behind millions of fans and start afresh with a new base in the same generation. Gears of War sold almost six million units (5.91 million), while Gears of War II sold roughly same amount as the original (5.23 million).

So as we stated earlier, the best must be saved for last, this one really hammers down some 10-inch nails into the rumor's coffin.

Yesterday it was announced that Microsoft is hiring 54 talented people, most of whom will join the Project Natal team and 343 industries. Interestingly enough, a few good men out of the pack will be chosen to lead some pretty big titles.

Microsoft Game studios is seeking a highly experienced lead producer who will work with Epic to "drive the success of Gears of War", a new job advert has revealed. This according to develop.

And there you have it, there's no way MS will be funding development of the next Gears of War only to have it go multiplatform. The rumor's dead, let's all move on.

Thoughts?

Didn't they say the Xbox was a 10 year plan or something? Its to soon to talk about next, next gen, I'm glad its staying on the 360.

Also the Gears books have a female character in delta squad, an older woman, a sniper and the books are canon, obviously she couldn't be in Gears 2 since the first book came out around the time Gears 2 came out but she could be in Gears 3.

I recall a Gear called Jace in the comic books and Marcus talks to him in Gears 2 hence why I believe we might see Bernie in Gears 3.
