The tech industry is very compartmental & incestual.  Sony's and Microsoft's gaming wings are competitors, but they partner/license in a lot of other areas.

Licensing the use of blu ray shouldn't be any more of a problem for Microsoft than licensing HDMI (another tech Sony holds rights to).

The report also claims the console may not play used games. The anti-used game system could in theory link a copy of a game to a specific Xbox Live account.

Link

This might call for the raising of some fingers out there...especially, since it seems this would essentially also affect rentals.

My thoughts exactly.  Not gonna happen.  The console would fail.

This would cause a fail that's plain right there to see, if it was implemented pricing could be either forced to stay the same putting off many purchasers or if the prices fell to a static low developers would suffer lose/lose.

backwards compatability do you guys think it's important or not?

That might depend on how they treat the 360 on its way out. If they outright abandon it for whatever the new system is, the new one better have some kind of backwards compatability. I remember the last years of the PS2 being some of its best and somehow it didn't matter that the PS3 didn't support them.

I wonder if compatability will be made easier or tougher with everything going DLC as of late, though.

Just to add more fuel to the rumor mill fire surrounding the new Xbox console:

New Xbox will not include disc drive

The follow-up to the Xbox 360 will not include a disc drive, according to MCV.

The console, which is set to release in 2013, will offer “compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage.”

It is not known when the new hardware will be officially announced, though E3 2012 (5th – 7thJune) is a high possibility.

Microsoft said they do not comment on rumour and speculation.

The Xbox 360 was Microsoft's second video game console, which released in December 2005. Microsoft later launched the Xbox 360 S, a slimmer version of the console, in 2010

I thought also the '720' was going to be backwards compatible but with disk drive it is unlikely.
I can see both sides of not having a disc drive. Positive sides being- less chance of piracy, less bits to go wrong, quicker loading times. Negatives being- no DVD/blu ray playback, Solid State devices are expensive and no resale value on your games.

If they do it, they are doing it for two reasons. No backwards compatibility so you HAVE to buy new games, and buying these games you cant then trade them after.

I really doubt they'll abandon the idea of having a disc drive - backwards compatibility alone keeps this desirable, though I realise it's not crucial to the success of the console. Just seems unlikely especially if it's due for a release in the next year or so? Who knows. Excited to see what they have to offer with it though.

You can still be backwards compatible without a disc drive, but that's not the point really. The knock on effect is jobs: manufacturers/distributers/retailers. In saying that the nice feeling of opening a shiny new box will be gone forever, do you remember the first video game you bought all by yourself after saving for ages? Add to that that you will never again own a video game (well if you stay with MS) because effectively you will have a timed license with the right to use to data!!!

On the other hand no more scratched discs, no regional release dates(I hope!) and no dlc preorder item cock-ups.

MS Announces it won't be announcing its next console at E3.

Quote
"While we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon. For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360-and it's the best year ever for Xbox 360. The console is coming off its biggest year ever-a year in which Xbox outsold all other consoles worldwide. Xbox 360 didn't just outsell other consoles, it also outsold all other TV-connected devices like DVD players, as well as digital media receivers and home theatre systems. And in our seventh year, we sold more consoles than in any other year-defying convention.

This year, we will build on that Xbox 360 momentum. With "Halo 4," "Forza Horizon," "Fable: The Journey," and other great Kinect games on the way, our 2012 Xbox lineup is our strongest ever. This year, we will deliver more TV, music, and movie experiences for Xbox 360-as we'll make it even easier to find and control your all entertainment. And this year, Xbox games, music, and video are coming to Windows 8 so people can enjoy their Xbox entertainment wherever they go."

As stated above: Microsoft: E3 2012 Is All About Xbox 360

Microsoft Corp. officially denied plans to demonstrate its next-generation Xbox video game system at the E3 industrial trade-show in June, 2012. The company stressed that the upcoming E3 is all about Xbox 360 and is not about Xbox Next, which is due in 2013, according to unofficial information.

"While we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon. For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360 - and it’s the best year ever for Xbox 360. The console is coming off its biggest year ever - a year in which Xbox outsold all other consoles worldwide," said Ryan James, group PR manager for Microsoft Studios, reportsGameInformer web-site.

Microsoft has reasons not to show off any next-generation Xbox (code-named Loop or Durango) this year as it needs to emphasize the currently available hardware, software and services and provide prospect of what can be done with the Xbox as a platform that will eventually include PCs and smartphones. Another strong reason not to demonstrate the Xbox Next may be the lack of finalized specifications or even final concept itself.

Earlier this year Sony Computer Entertainment also denied plans to show off the PlayStation 4 hardware at the E3 this year, partly because it will need to attract as much attention to the PlayStation Vita portable system as possible and partly because it hopes to keep people impressed with the PlayStation 3.

But while both Microsoft and Sony have their reasons not to show off their future game consoles and technologies at the E3 2012, with Nintendo launching Wii U later this year both will have to start disclosing details about their future hardware in a bid to slowdown sales of competing system.

I'm actually not minding them with-holding this for a while. There's still some juice in the current system and I'm sure MS doesn't want it to appear like it's abandoning Kinect, this early into its cycle (that, of course won't be an issue if the next system is backwards compatible with the peripheral out of the gate).

There's also a strong sense that companies aren't willing to flood the market with hardware announcements for fear of the lack of consumer focus on their particular product.
