The Australian government could introduce a mature rating for games as early as Jan 1st, 2013.

For years the Australian government has only classified games up to MA15+, suitable only for people over the age of 15. More violent or controversial games, meanwhile, have received either content cuts, changes or just outright bans.

However, a new bill was introduced to the Australian parliament’s Lower House earlier this month, with the legislation for an R18+ category prepared by the Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice, Jason Clare.

Further discussions are expected soon, with the expectation that the bill will pass with ease, thanks to the weight of public support. Australia's individual territories will be free to implement their own legislation.

"The R 18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material" said Clare.

This has been in the works for a while, it's nice to see Australia being treated as adults and not just the criminals they are!! MWA HA HA!

Reminds me of a time when game-playing didn't care how old you were, up until GTA days. Funny how we're all so against letting kids play call of duty or what-not when they're games that many of us grew up with. That said, the actual story based campaign content is FAR more "hardcore" than it once was. Describing the genuine happenings of WW1 & 2 doesn't quite compare with showing terrorists storming easily identifiable areas of the world in modern day style. I was still shocked to see that warning Modern Warfare has saying there's disturbing content, "Do you want to skip it?" :D

There were a lot more disturbing things going on during the halftime of the Superbowl and no one asked me if I wanted to "skip it"....  :-\
