As noted by PS3Trophies.org, it appears that more Borderlands DLC is imminent. The five recently added Trophies point to three coliseums, called The Angelic Ruins, The Gully and Hell-Burbia, all of which appear to have "lesser" and "larger" challenges.

Eurogamer mentions that Borderlands Creative Director Mikey Neuman was all set to reveal something on Twitter, but it appears the marketing powers changed the announcement to a "later occasion." Publisher Take-Two seems happy with the success of Borderlands and critical reception to the game's first DLC pack, The Zombie Island of Doctor Ned. Reaching out to 2K Games about the DLC, we were informed, "No official announcements have been made regarding future Borderlands DLC at this time."

2K Games announced today that the second piece of downloadable content for Borderlands™, Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, will be available on December 29, 2009 from the Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft for 800 Microsoft Points and on January 7, 2010 from the PlayStation®Network for $9.99. The downloadable content will also be available on Windows PC. This explosive piece of action-driven content is in development at Gearbox Software and provides players with more methods of destruction as they tear through the denizens of Pandora.

Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot is an intense single-player or cooperative experience that expands the mayhem by adding three new Riot Mode arenas where players will endure an onslaught of Pandora's baddest enemies. Working together, players will fend off the masses as they fight for fame, honor, and more importantly, loot. Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot also adds a new bank feature, which allows players extra storage capacity for when they encounter one of the more than 16 million weapons that Borderlands has to offer; and the ability to acquire two additional skill points as quest rewards, making their characters even more powerful than before

Gearbox's Randy Pitchford made a pretty bold claim when he said that the new Borderlands DLC, "Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot," would comprise more than just new levels, but an entirely new mode as well. After an hour or so spent battling it out in Moxxi's tournament, we're happy to report that, though it doesn't feel like a brand new game, it provides a welcome shake-up of the main story's quest-based structure.

From the moment you descend into the Underdome and meet sadistic sexpot Moxxi, you're reminded that Borderlands boasts more style and flair than practically any game this year. As we learn in a cool cinematic, Moxxi's biding her time until meeting her fourth husband by making treasure hunters battle it out in her underground arenas.

The structure is simple: A wave of enemies enters, you kill them all, madly try to collect the health and ammo refills that drop from the sky, and then start fresh. Each wave is themed, like the Gun Wave (everyone is armed) and the Horde Wave, which pitches an army of flaming bad guys on a collision course with you.

At first, the only quest available in the hub that connects Moxxi's three tournaments tasks you with completing five rounds of five waves in each arena. You don't need a calculator to tell you that's a whole lot of murdering. Luckily, the constant narration and berating from Moxxi and the roar of the crowd help the fights feel like more of a spectacle than just a connected series of battles.

The weird thing is that battling in the arenas doesn't award you experience -- nor weapons. Though the rewards might be delicious if you make your way to the end of an arena (I'm not sure, my poor Level 11 could never get that far), it robs Underdome fights of the feeling of constant character growth, which is really the driving force behind Borderlands. (Update: Gearbox tells us that new weapons drop underneath Moxxi after each round but "the XP thing is intentional after a lot of focus testing. It breaks the rest of the game if you let people crank up too much XP. This is a separate game mode.")

It seems like, even with Moxxi lording over the proceedings and with occasional variables like reduced gravity, playing through all three arenas would start to feel a little grindy after a while. Of course, I'm sure that the whole thing is turned on its ear with the addition of a co-op buddy, and isn't that the way Borderlands was meant to be played in the first place?

Say "sup, baby" to Moxxi.

If Mad Moxxi, the star of the upcoming expansion for Borderlands, has any endearing qualities (and we assume she does, seeing as how she's already netted three husbands), they're not present in the opening cinematic of the expansion, posted above. Who would want to settle down with a self-centered, death-dealing vixen like Ms. Moxxi? By the look of her, we're guessing clowns, mimes, and practitioners of other pasty-faced professions.

What is present in the trailer is oodles of style, just as we've come to expect from Gearbox's projects. Check out the video above, then read our preview to find out exactly what Mad Moxxi's problem is. (We're guessing it has something to do with her being completely insane.)

Visit The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, where the Jakobs Corporation would like to invite you to experience the splendour of a corporate owned small town known as Jakobs Cove. Any rumours you may have heard about the "undead" walking our streets are completely preposterous and we officially deny them all. If those rumours turn out to be true simply purchase a firearm from the conveniently located Jakobs Brand Vending Machines and aim for the head. Also, would you mind saving our employees? (Non-union only please)

Are you god's gift to gun fights? Think you're the best? Wanna prove it? Then help us celebrate the grand opening of Marcus Bank (a subsidiary of Marcus Corp) by killing hundreds and hundreds of people in Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, the only competitive arena around where your next of kin can be assured that you're coming back famous...or not at all. (All proceeds are kept by us)

Can't wait for Shenmue 3

I hate jokes that rely on visual imagery.

I've had it right up to here with them.
