Can't wait for Shenmue 3

I hate jokes that rely on visual imagery.

I've had it right up to here with them.

Microsoft confirms Kinect price

Kinect will cost £129.99/€149.99, and come bundled with launch title Kinect Adventures, Microsoft has confirmed.

"We obviously don't make pricing decisions without doing our research," Xbox product director Aaron Greenberg told Eurogamer in an interview published elsewhere on the site.

"We've done a number of pricing studies on a global scale across a whole variety of audience segments. We've found that when we talked to consumers about the different types of experiences you get with Kinect, the sensor with the full game at £129.99 does quite well.

"There will be a whole new wave of consumers looking for all new ways to experience games and entertainment. To be able to do that with the console plus the sensor and the game at that value is pretty unprecedented."

Microsoft also revealed a new Xbox 360 4GB model, to be launched in the UK on 20th August, priced £149.99/€199.99.

The Xbox 360 4GB plus the Kinect sensor and Kinect Adventures will be available as a bundle for £249.99/€299.99 when Kinect launches in the UK this November.

While Microsoft is yet to announce A UK release date for Kinect, retailers have this evening begun taking pre-orders for the device, the new Xbox 360 4GB and the bundle.

The new Xbox 360 4GB differs slightly from the Xbox 360 250GB unveiled during Microsoft's E3 2010 conference last month.

The 4GB is internal flash memory, and the console has a black matte finish. Otherwise it's exactly the same as the "whisper quiet" Xbox 360 250GB, and includes built in Wi-Fi, the smaller design, and a hard drive bay.

"It will effectively replace the Arcade console," Greenberg said. "We see it as a great value entry price point for consumers. We're upgrading the storage to a full 4GB, which is quite a bit of storage. At £149.99 we think that's a great price point."

More than 15 Kinect-enabled games will be available at launch, including the bundled Kinect Adventures, and Kinect Sports, Kinectimals and Kinect Joy Ride.

All first party Kinect games will retail for £39.99. Kinect Adventures, however, will be a full-price retail game.

Microsoft has high hopes for the sensor. Greenberg likened Kinect's launch to that of a new console.

"A lot of people have talked about this being the type of leap you would typically see when you went to a new generation," he said.

"But the nice thing is we're able to bring that next generation experience to market this generation.

"We already have storage. We already have high definition gaming. We already have a connected online community. So adding the sensor to the experience enables us to unlock a whole new variety of games and entertainment. We're pretty optimistic this will provide multiple years of life to the current life cycle."

Now I know exactly how much I won't be spending in November.   ;D

Kinect - a DO and DO NOT guide of how to play
With so many restrictions on what you can and can't do, clarification is needed

Microsoft's motion sensing Kinect device has been surrounded by controversy over what it can and cannot do. So much so, in fact, we're losing count. So, based on what we know so far, we've put together this guide on how you will and won't be able to use Kinect when it's finally released.

We asked Microsoft for clarification on all of the points below, but their response was rather woolly, containing lines like "What we've shown thus far is only the tip of the iceberg of a whole new era of controller-free games and experiences brought to life by Kinect". So in the spirit of videogame journalism, we'll assume everything the internet told us is correct until the facts reveal themselves in due course.

Project Milo back on

Microsoft's on again off again relationship with Peter Molyneux's Kinect project Milo & Kate appears to be on again.

Last week at the TEDGlobal Conference in Oxford Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux said Microsoft had no plans to release Milo & Kate, according to a BBC report.

A fortnight previous, Microsoft mouthpiece Aaron Greenberg said "right now it's not a game" before changing his mind, after which Lionhead boss Molyneux waded in and said Greenberg's original comment was based on out-of-date information.

But according to Greenberg, who we spoke to last night, there's still a chance that Project Milo will be released.

"You can see that it's definitely not just a tech demo," Xbox product director Aaron Greenberg told Eurogamer in an interview.

"They're building something that's pretty unique and compelling. We leave it up to Peter and his team to determine what that game is and when it would come to market. All we've said is that at this point in time it's not coming this holiday. But as you can see it's definitely quite a bit more than just a tech demo.

"What that turns out to be and how it gets brought to market all remains to be seen. We're fortunate to have one of the brilliant creators of our industry pushing the boundaries of creativity with this project. It's been exciting for people that have seen a preview of it. He's [Peter Molyneux] best to speak to about what this product will eventually become."

So it's Molyneux's decision whether it gets released?

"There are a whole variety of factors. But for now it's in Peter's hands. Peter serves as our creative director for all of our studios in Europe. What that turns out to be and all those details remain to be seen. It's not something we're bringing to market this holiday, so we're going to be a bit more vague about it than if it was launching in a couple of months."

Such is the extent of Hype King Molyneux's BS, he could physically show me Milo working in my house on my very own 360 even without Kinect connected and I still wouldn't believe that it exists.   ;D

But I don't wanna be watched in my home D:

the story that you could be watched in your home is absolute bollocks. If microsoft did that and got found out they would lose millions of dollars in law suits. It's just ridiculous nonsense.

It's actually true, why do you think all Windows laptops now come with integrated webcams  ;D
bloody hope its not true u do not wanna see me first thing in a mornin

Kinect hardware sales boost is "bollocks"

Don McCabe, the outspoken manager of UK independent retailer CHIPS, firmly believes that Kinect won't boost hardware sales for Microsoft.

"In some ways Microsoft has missed the boat," he told GamesIndustry.biz. "Over the last two years the casual market has been declining rapidly."

"I don't think it's going to add any new hardware sales. I spotted in their last response to a survey, they said it would lift hardware sales by 5 to 15 percent.

"I think that's bollocks," he added. "You lift it by one or two per cent and you've had a result."

McCabe thinks the £130 asking price for Kinect is too high, particularly when compared with Wii - and he's not convinced anyone's that bothered about Microsoft's new device to begin with.

"The pricing is immature to a certain degree," he said. "Consumers see it as just a catch-up with the Wii, but they don't see it as much of an improvement.

"When you see a new hardware product or a new peripheral, you normally see quite a response from the public. We're not seeing that, they're completely underwhelmed by it, really."

McCabe's certain that Microsoft is testing the water for a future generation of consoles. If Kinect flies, great; if it doesn't, "we'll still intergrate it in the next machine".

Mr CHIPS is convinced that hardware for Microsoft is just a "means" of getting people subscribed to Xbox Live.

Still, if Kinect does fly, McCabe will be happy, because like a boomerang the device is coming straight back.

"From our point of view, the more Microsoft things that are out there the better, because it's one of those things that people will buy, play it for a short time then trade it back in. So I think we'll make a good trade-in market on it," predicted McCabe.

He's spot on.    ;D

Microsoft defends Kinect price
"The price thing itself depends on how you look at it" MS explains.

Microsoft has put forward its argument for why Kinect is good value to TechRadar.

It was Microsoft's group marketing manager Brett Siddons who pointed out that it's good value, when he was talking at the Kinect stand at an Amazon event.

"The price thing itself depends on how you look at it," explained Siddons "It's £129.99 RRP but it comes with a game within that price - so [Kinect] Adventures will be packed in with the camera.

"If you buy it with the console which normally costs £149.99, [the package price is] £249.99 with the Kinect and the games - another 100 pound on top.

"The camera tracks six people - with two active gamers - you don't have to buy anything else.

"I'll let you do the maths but when you say Nintendo Wii or PlayStation Move you buy this and this, even for a two player games.

"What do you need and what do actually have to spend for a two player game for this device versus that device. You actually find that [Kinect] is very competitively priced."

Kinect no good for flight games says Ubisoft
"Buttons are need to control an airplane" says H.A.W.X. 2 man.

Edward Douglas, the narrative director for H.A.W.X. 2, has told CVG that flight games won't work on Kinect.

"My personal thought is that buttons are needed to control an airplane," he explained, getting straight to the point. "Why would you go so far away from that kind of authenticity?"

Well, that was straight to the point. So don't expect to see H.A.W.X. 2 feature any Kinect compatibility and arguably not at any point in the series. But do you think there will be an air combat sim that uses Kinect one day?

The day they announced "Natal", I always assumed it would eventually be incorporated WITH a controller.  Sort of like Sony's sixaxis feature, but ... you know ... actually works.

Being able to steer an aircraft by motioning your controller is just common sense.  How many times have you played a racing game or something and physically tilted your arms trying to make a sharp turn?  Does it do anything?  No.  But it's just a natural human response that developers should take advantage of to immerse gamers.

Kinect = Interesting Gimmick
Controller = Precision
Kinect + Controller = Awesome!

Make it happen devs.   :P
