Kinect blamed for return of 360 'red ring of death'
MS denies BBC report

A number of Xbox 360 owners have reported suffering console failures shortly after buying Kinect.

According to the BBC, users are blaming the motion sensing peripheral for new instances of the dreaded red ring of death - although the possibility that their systems could have red ringed anyway obviously looms large.

"We plugged it [Kinect] in the day we got it but only played it a few times before we got the red lights," Adam Winnifrith told BBC Radio 4's You and Yours.

"The next day when we tried it again we still had the red rings of death and haven't been able to use it since."

Online gaming forums are carrying similar stories.

"I have never had a single issue with my Xbox," one poster wrote. "i got Kinect for Christmas and the screen starting freezing randomly. Then on New Year's eve... BAM I got the red ring. Very sad."

Another read: "Yep, I got the Red rings of death on Christmas day The very same day my kids got a Kinect."

Responding to the report, Microsoft denied any link between Kinect and Xbox 360 failures.

"There is no correlation between the three flashing red lights error and Kinect," the firm said in a statement. "Any new instances of the three flashing red lights error are merely coincidental."

So people buying Kinect to use with older consoles get RRD, Forcing them to buy a new slim model. How very convenient MS!!

Microsoft announces Avatar Kinect

As rumoured earlier this week, Microsoft has shown off Avatar Kinect, a new party chat feature heading to the Xbox 360 dashboard.

A brief trailer shown during Microsoft's presentation at the CES event in Las Vegas showed how you'll be able to get your Kinect-enabled chums' avatars together in one of 15 different virtual settings and then chew the proverbial fat.

The peripheral will then do its best to map your movements – including facial expressions - onto your avatar. Not only that, but you'll be able to record your discussions and share them on Facebook, should you see fit.

Avatar Kinect will launch in the Spring and will be free to all Xbox Live Gold members.

Microsoft: Kinect sells 8 million units worldwide

It seems like just last November, Microsoft was predicting it'd sell around 5 million Kinect sensors by now. Wait -- it was last November! Anyway, that prediction was off by 3 million units ... in the company's favor. MS boss Steve Ballmer just told the crowd at his CES 2011 keynote that 8 million of the devices have been sold worldwide in six months. (We're guessing that's units shipped to retail, not sold through to consumers, but Microsoft wasn't more specific.)

2.5 million Kinects had been shipped by the end of November 2010, this after one industry analyst predicted that it was possible the hardware could top 4 million sold by January 31 of last year. What a pessimist!

Only around 5 million, maybe 6, will actually have been sold which is still very impressive, 8 million have been shipped.

It stops you from whoring achievements and playing games, you know, what a games console is actually for, therefore it's pointless!   :)
