Halo: Reach credit wipe, bans begun

Bungie's final weekly update before the launch of Halo: Reach mentions that it has already wiped Credits early players have earned in the game, and begun banning online cheaters.

Under the heading "A Brave New World", community reps Sketch and Tyson acknowledge that there are players with legitimate, legally obtained copies of Reach out there now - "courtesy of an eager retail store that couldn't wait".

So the developer has reset Credits, as it promised to last week in order to ensure a level playing field for Reach players. Credits are used to buy cosmetic customisations in Reach's Armoury.

Bungie has also already begun banning cheaters in the online game. "We take the Reach online experience VERY seriously. Bungie has invested years of hard work creating a game that we want our fans to enjoy for years to come and we have zero tolerance for people who try and ruin that experience for others," Sketch said.

"Modifying your console or the game itself is a violation of the terms of use for LIVE and Reach and will result in potentially severe penalties. We are already aware of a number of nefarious deeds by a very small percentage of early adopters and we have already been taking action."

Should I buy this, or is this going to be the same old Halo that I got bored with two titles ago? Frankly I can't tell from any of the previews because the gaming journalists are all too busy giving Bungie a BJ to give any real information on the game.

From playing the beta and what I've gathered so far, it is the same Halo loved/hated by everyone.  But with some slight Modern Warfare sprinkles.

If you didn't like any of the previous 3 Halos, you won't like this one.  If you did like any of them, there's a possibility Halo Reach will have an evolved version of whatever it was you liked.

Personally, I've already bought it.  Preorded from Amazon.com (bonus $20 rebate on your next purchase).  And unlike many of the new games I buy, I will actually be playing this one.   ;)

Jurassic Parky

Just got back from town, ended up getting Reach. Took some games to trade in and Gamestation gave me £194 for everything. Should come in handy for some Pre-Orders coming in Sept/Oct.

What games did you trade in to get that much?

Jurassic Parky

Quite a few new'ish ones. Kane & Lynch 2, Toy Story 3, Crackdown 2, ModNation Racers were the better value ones, threw in som old one too, like Lego Indiana Jones.

Halo Reach cheaters at it ALREADY
And Bungie has 'already been taking action'

The game's only just come out this morning and already dirty cheaters are plaguing the servers of Halo Reach. But it sounds like Bungie's about to get serious on all of you.

Issuing a stern warning to cheaters, Bungie says it has a number of new ban hammer tools primed and ready to fire on those that threaten to spoil the multiplayer experience of its precious Halo sendoff.

"Our team is standing at the ready behind the sights of our fully operational Banhammer Battlestation. We take the Reach online experience VERY seriously," the developer said.

"Bungie has invested years of hard work creating a game that we want our fans to enjoy for years to come and we have zero tolerance for people who try and ruin that experience for others.

"We are already aware of a number of nefarious deeds by a very small percentage of early adopters and we have already been taking action. We expect that a few more will turn up once the population explodes on September 14th. We will be ready, watching, waiting, firing at will on people who deserve it," it added.

And with the new game comes many new types of ban, so no form of bad behavior is impossible to punish.

"We have all sorts of new fancy tools at our disposal now and as we start to come up to full speed we'll be engaging all of them," Bungie added. "Voice bans, host bans, console bans, gamertag bans, credit bans and the automatic habitual quitter penalty are but a few of our sharply honed weapons hungering for blood."

You have been warned. Don't ruin the fun.

Analysts doubt Reach can beat Black Ops

A handful of the world's leading videogame analysts have questioned Microsoft's confident claim that Halo: Reach can and will outsell Call of Duty: Black Ops.

"I just don't understand why they would even make such a comment without at least contextualising whether it is just on the Xbox 360 or all platforms," EEDAR's Jesse Divinch told Eurogamer - referring to what UK Xbox boss Stephen McGill said last week.

"If he was referring to just the Xbox 360 version of Halo: Reach outselling all platform sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops, then I would put those odds at Slim to None, and Slim just set sail for the Bahamas."

Michael Pachter - analyst for Wedbush Morgan - agreed, and said Halo: Reach had "no chance overall".

Lazard Capital's Colin Sebastian was of a similar mindset, and predicted: "Overall, Call of Duty [Black Ops] will sell significantly more units than Halo [Reach], clearly due to the multiple platforms."

But on Xbox 360 alone, the analysts were divided. Michael Pachter was confident Halo: Reach "will outsell Black Ops", but Colin Sebastian was on the fence: "On the Xbox 360, we expect the two titles will be neck and neck."

"If I had to predict," added Jesse Divinch. "I'd go with Call of Duty: Black Ops."

Sean Dromgoole, head of SomeResearch and GameVision, characterised Microsoft's intentions as "ambitious".

He pulled out some statistics to prove his point. (Note: GameVision Eyeball Hours are hours spent gaming by "active users" - people aged between 10 to 45 years-old playing a game bought in the last 12 months.)

"Last time we looked, in Spring, COD [all versions, all platforms] had 4.4 million players in the UK who were playing for a total of 74 million GameVision Eyeball Hours per month," explained Dromgoole.

"At the same time Halo [all versions] had 1.5 million players who were logging 16 million GameVision Eyeball Hours per month."

Halo: Reach was released today exclusively on Xbox 360. Call of Duty: Black Ops will be released on 9th November on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Yesterday corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios Phil Spencer said: "When it comes to the size and scope of a franchise and especially the dedication of the fans, no game is bigger than Halo."

MS fixing Reach campaign co-op issue

Microsoft has reassured Halo: Reach fans that it's trying to fix an issue that prevents 4GB Xbox 360 owners from playing Reach's campaign cooperatively, Eurogamer has been told.

Eurogamer was contacted by a number of Halo: Reach owners about the issue this morning.

Owners of the 4GB Xbox 360 (that 4GB is internal memory) who try to join a co-op campaign are greeted by this message: "One or more players do not have the hard drive required for this game type."

Microsoft's official Halo: Reach FAQ reads:

Q1: The error "One or more players do not have an Xbox 360 Hard Drive. An Xbox 360 Hard Drive is required to play co-op on Xbox LIVE or system link" occurs when I try to play. Why?

A1: One or more players do not have a certified Xbox 360 hard drive attached to their Xbox 360 console. Some multiplayer aspects of Halo: Reach require an Xbox 360 certified hard drive.

Online reports suggest USB memory sticks do not fill in for the absent storage. Halo 3: ODST suffered a similar limitation.

With Microsoft's costly £80 hard drive not on sale till later this month (it's out now in the US), some UK Halo: Reach owners are currently unable to access one of the game's most compelling features.

This morning Microsoft insisted the limitation is "temporary", but could not say when it will be fixed.

A Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamer: "We are aware of the issue and are quickly working to resolve it."

According to Nukezilla, the problem only affects the new slim 4GB Xbox 360, and standard multiplayer remains unaffected.
