Take-Two "very proud" of Mafia II

Take-Two has backed divisive gangster game Mafia II and hit back at comments from an analyst that it will fail to be profitable.

The parent company of Mafia II publisher 2K Games said it was "very proud" of the title, and described developer 2K Czech as "extremely talented".

Eurogamer gave Mafia II 4/10 in its review.

It currently enjoys a 75/100 rating on review aggregation site Metacritic.

Despite the mixed response from critics, Mafia II has enjoyed a sales success.

This week it replaced Square Enix's Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days at the top of the UK all-formats chart.

However, Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter last week predicted sluggish overall sales for Mafia II.

"Mafia II's average Metacritic score of 74 is well below expectations, and consumer interest appears to be waning, as the game's position has dropped in many best-seller lists in its first week. With six years in development, we believe the game is unlikely to achieve profitability," Pachter said in a note.

"We're very proud of the game," said Take-Two CEO Ben Feder in a third quarter earnings call this evening, "which features incredible action including car chases, explosive gun play, compelling characters and an engaging narrative that meticulously recreates the 1940s and 1950s.

"Mafia II was developed by 2K Czech, an extremely talented studio. Based upon the initial launch we expect this to be another profitable title for Take-Two," he added.

I am enjoying playing Mafia II , but it not really open world as you think. But DLC "Jimmy's Vendetta" is coming on Tuesday , so that should add some extras that can be done in gaming world.

I've finished this in about 16 hours of game play (which includes going back and re-doing some of the missions to get some of the extra achievements) and although i enjoyed playing it I think it's ridiculously short and is in no ways "open world".

Thank god for the new Tomb Raider, helped me de-stress after a tough week! More of the same please

They banged on about it being a huge epic story set in an open world, yet when it releases it only takes around 8 hours for a single play through and there are no side missions or well anything at all to do in the so called 'open world' other than story missions and turning taps and lights on/off. Now they will release sh*t loads of dlc that should have been in the game from the start and expect people to buy it. An absolute rip off the devs and publishers should be ashamed of themselves, how can you justify charging £40.00 for a game that short and then justify charging for the dlc? I will buy this game when it's a tenner in a couple of months, and screw the dlc.

Totally agree, and if as you said last night the DLC may even be on the disc in the first place it's taking the outright piss! As enjoyable as it was to play there's no way I'm forking out for DLC that's already installed on the bloody disc!

So does anyone know if the DLC is actually on the disc or not?

From what i have heard there is a character in the game and when you approach him he says 'i haven't got anything for you yet, come back another time' or words to that effect. This has led me and others to believe that the dlc is in fact already on the disc. I mean there were supposed to be loads of side missions and a huge epic single player story (that's what they said themselves during development) so it seems to me they took a lot of stuff out of the game so they could then charge for dlc. I mean they released the first piece of dlc very quickly after release, all seems a bit fishy to me.

Any ideas where he is? I'm playing it through again on Hard to get the achievement (and collect the Playboy magazines) before I trade it in for F1 so if you know where he is I'll look out for him and see what he says.
