'If people love it,' Halo's Firefight mode could be added to Reach

Halo 3: ODST's survival horde Firefight Mode is probably the most notable addition to the upcoming Halo 3 expansion from Bungie Studios. With Halo: Reach headed to consoles next Fall, the developer had left the possibility of the new mode's inclusion in that project up in the air ... at least until now. Speaking with Eurogamer at PAX 2009, Bungie community manager Brian Jarrard said Firefight could very well make it into Halo: Reach -- "if people love it," that is.

"I don't think we've ever been known to really take things away from each successive release, so I think it's safe to say that if Firefight gets a lot of traction and people love it, it probably has a good future home in our next title as well," Jarrard said. Shh! Nobody bring up the battle rifle!

That's like asking if Horde will be in Gears 3!

I wouldn't be surprised if this is fake, what do you think?

Reviewer: ODST is 'underwhelming'
Reviews going live on 20 September

Halo 3 ODST is 'underwhelming', reckons a journalist who has recently been given access to a review build of the game.

When asked what it was like, our source mustered a fairly despondent response:

"Two words: really underwhelming."

"You just look at it and think 'so what?'. Sure, the multiplayer is fun (it's Halo after all) but it's all built on an old engine (which looks pretty much untouched) and looks nowhere near as good as games such as Gears of War 2 or Killzone 2. It smacks of no effort and is a teensy bit cynical. [Microsoft] needed a big franchise title for this Christmas and presumably there wasn't enough time to build something new, so they gave us new missions on old, ageing technology that didn't really look that great first time round."

Harsh, but is pretty much what we we've been thinking all along really. The game runs in less-than-720 resolution, is really jaggy and overall looks pretty washed out - regardless of what the gameplay is like, we reckon a 'triple A' franchise deserves 'triple A' technology.

This is Halo. HALO! One of the most recognisable and popular franchises the videogames world has ever seen. In terms of overall quality, it SHOULD be up there with Gears and Killzone, not limping along at 640p. Let's be clear, we say this as people who want Halo to be amazing, not 'fanboys' or 'haters', as backwards-cap-wearing American teens will no doubt accuse us of being. It doesn't matter if you're the biggest Halo and 360 Fan going - don't bury your head in the sand, demand better!

Anyway, back to our source. He reckons most reviews are poised 'to drop' September 20th:

"Embargo's lifted ten days from now. That's when we'll be slammin' our review live."

But what score will it be getting?

"Haven't decided yet. Prolly give it an eight to be safe."

To be safe... that's the world we live in people. Don't give big games low marks - no one wants to hear it.

Halo 3: ODST 2-disc soundtrack coming
Marty O'Donnell's score arrives on September 22

Sumthing Else Music Works will release a 2-disc Halo 3 ODST soundtrack on September 22, and you should be pleased because ODST's soundtrack is brilliant.

We know because we've finished it. Embargo shackles are holding back the review for a few more days (be patient people), but we think we can tell you, without MS sending out the helicopters, that the new soundtrack is as dark as it is epic, and will make you want to turn up that system.

"I'm happy to be able to share all new compositions and recordings created for Halo 3: ODST," said composer Marty O'Donnell. "The music reflects the new mood, new heroes, and new story of the game. I worked with the Northwest Sinfonia for the orchestral recordings and also added some nice alto sax solos and some new guitar solos. The piano sneaks back in again a few times too, but I can't seem to help that."

The soundtrack will also be released via Sumthing Digital, and iTunes too, which is nice.

They should drop the ODST and re-rename it "Halo 3: Firefly".

My mate in Game just gave me the Sgt Johnson unlock code. I won't be getting the game on release day. Will probably be at the beginning of next month.
