Bungie has confirmed ODST will run at the same below-HD 1152x640 resolution as Halo 3.

Speaking to 360 Gamer magazine, senior designer Lars Bakken confessed that ODST's engine is practically the same as Halo 3's and that graphical improvements are a result of talented artists, rather than improved tech.

"Everything that existed in Halo 3's engine was there from the beginning. So the graphical differences that you're seeing in ODST is really testament to the artists, because they were able to just take the tools that we had from the beginning, and just make awesome looking stuff."

When asked about the game's resolution, Bakken confirmed it would be:

"The same as Halo 3."

So, less than 1280x720?

"Yes, exactly."

Which is perhaps surprising news for anyone who can recall Halo 3's launch, and remembers the, erm, 'excitement' that followed when word spread that Microsoft's flagship 360 title wasn't using its flagship resolution. Or perhaps it's not really that important?

Regardless, we're sure it'll give the PS3 fanboys something to shout about. If only because they have little else right now.

If the game was called Halo ODST and not Halo 3: ODST, I'm sure they would have beefed up the resolution to 720p.

But since the game is going to include the multiplayer portion of Halo 3, they probably had to keep everything on the same scale.

Failed

I still want this like Sambo wants a cure for his herpes.  :P :-[ :P

Is it September 22 yet?

Halo Reach to be Bungie's last 360 game
"ODST and then Reach is probably all you're going to get," Bungie tells CVG

Speaking to CVG during a recent visit to London to show off Halo: ODST, Bungie senior designer Lars Bakken told us that the forthcoming Halo Reach will most likely be Bungie's last 360 Halo game.

When asked if it would be safe to assume whether or not Reach is Bungie's last Halo game for the 360 platform, Bakken explained, "In terms of a platform for Halo games made by Bungie, yes. I can't answer that question for Microsoft though. Whether they have something in the works or not, I don't know if they're actually ready to talk about it yet, but in terms of Bungie-produced Halo games, ODST and then Reach is probably all you're going to get."

Brakken also told us that work on Halo: ODST is "done". "From our standpoint, we had to get it done and get everybody working on Halo Reach. Looking at the portfolio as a whole and the title roll out, this coming September is the right time for [ODST's release]."

Failed

The word 'probably' and the fact in the games industry everything is short term....

How not to pitch Halo 3: ODST

Listen, we're sure Halo 3: ODST is going to be a fine game, but Bungie's got to get a better pitchman than developer Lars Bakken. When asked by The Guardian about additions to the game, Bakken explained, "Obviously the things that have been brought over would be the weapons, the enemy types – those kinds of things haven't changed. Everything else is completely new: your character's health model, the fact that he doesn't have a motion tracker, he can't dual-wield, he takes damage when he falls off high surfaces, his health doesn't regenerate. All those things were not in Halo 3. That's very different."

... So. It's like the Halo everybody loves, except with the addition of taking things away. It's a shame Bungie's done with Halo after Reach -- we'd love to see them add things to Halo until it's basically just a guy in football pads with a potato gun going against the Covenant.

Failed

The ODST gets a new vision mode and a better pistol. To offset losing everything else and you have to pick up health packs.

Excellent promo.  I'm authentically excited about this game now.  Not because of my franchise loyalty, but because it actually looks like a great experience.  I hope the characters are as charming as they appeared in the video.
