Black Ops outperforming Modern Warfare 2
Preorders for the next title in the Call of Duty series ahead of MW2.

The pre-orders for Black Ops are already exceeding those for Modern Warfare 2, reports IndustryGamers.

Despite the strong performance months ahead of its release, Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson says that Black Ops won't be as successful at retail after its launch as Modern Warfare 2 was.

Wilson blames "competition, weaker marketing, and the Infinity Ward situation." However, past performance shows us competition doesn't matter much to Call of Duty, Activision markets the hell out of everything and the Infinity Ward situation isn't likely to matter outside of hardcore gamers. Still, we shall see!

Call of Duty: Black Ops Hardened and Prestige editions confirmed
Online retailer lets slip that bumper packages for the FPS will be on the way.

Call of Duty: Black Ops will be available in Hardened and Prestige editions, reports IGN.

The packages were spotted as a pre-order item at Buy.com. Modern Warfare 2 was also available as a Hardened or Prestige edition.

There's no word on what to expect from these packages but given they're carrying price-tags of $79.99 for Hardened and $149.99 for Prestige, expect something substantial.

Activision spending more on Black Ops than MW2
Treyarch title represents publisher's 'biggest ever investment'

It might not be confident that Black Ops can outsell the record-breaking Modern Warfare 2 - but Activision is prepared to throw even more money at Treyarch's game.

According to Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, November's FPS will represent the publishers "biggest ever investment" in a single title.

And it's obvious why that faith exists - with Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime (working under the Acti-Blizzard banner these days, of course) calling the title "one of the best products that we've ever created".

Kotick said in Activision Blizzard's Q2 earnings call last night: "This [is] across the board, the biggest investment that we've ever made in a launch of a title. And I think when audiences see the product, they'll see why we're doing it this way.

"But the market opportunity is bigger than it's ever been. The installed base of hardware is bigger than it's ever been. The product has incredibly broad appeal, but it also has a whole host of functions that are going to be unique to the core consumer.

"And from that perspective, we feel like it's the most appropriate Activision product to put these kinds of resources behind. And I think there's a lot of competition, not just from games but from a whole host of other things that you can do with your leisure times.

"And this is something that we think has the potential to break through and appeal to a much broader consumer base than ever before."

Matching Modern Warfare 2's stunning sales record will be tough for Treyarch's game - but it's made a good start: Pre-orders of Black Ops are already ahead of those for Infinity Ward's shooter.

Activision declares war on pre-owned
Publisher wants to 'limit supply' of content in second-hand games

Activision has added its voice to the chorus of major publishers looking to do damage to - or at least take a chunk of money out of - the second-hand games market.

2010 has already seen EA Sports launch its controversial Online Pass - which requires gamers to enter a one-time code for important in-game content.

The move seems to be a bid to deliberately devalue pre-owned titles - and has been emulated by THQ. Ubisoft, meanwhile, has publicly supported the idea.

Speaking in Activision Blizzard's Q2 investors call last night, COO Thomas Tippl said the firm was increasing the importance of its DLC to 'limit the supply' of content in pre-owned titles.

"We are still evaluating various possibilities for greater participation in the used-games business. What's been working the best so far is providing additional content and therefore limiting the supply to used games.

"So that's a proven strategy that we will continue. And any other initiatives, we will be talking about when we get closer to it."

He added: "Today [we have] more resources than ever dedicated to creating additional content for Call of Duty, whether that's map packs, whether that's game modes and the whole host of new [downloadable] features that we're going to talk about when we get close to the launch of Black Ops."

Looks like we can expect some weighty DLC for Black Ops, then - and perhaps even an 'online pass' all of Activision's own.
