Crysis 2

Crytek spill first details on Crysis 2; set in a "new style of jungle"

The February 2010 issue of PCGamer Magazine has the first, tiny morsels of information and in-game screens (above) of EA and Crytek's hotly anticipated, yet secretive Crysis sequel. Announced -- well, teased -- all the way back at EA's E3 press conference, all we've seen so far is the new and improved Nanosuit 2.0, the supersoldier armor our protagonist will be wearing that assists in the killing of aliens and bad guys. That, and glimpses of the CryENGINE 3 technology.

Nathan Camarillo, executive producer on Crysis 2, tells the magazine that the sequel won't take place on another tropical island setting as we're used to. Instead, Crysis 2 makes the jump to a "new style of jungle" -- something they aren't ready to fully discuss just yet.

"We are applying our expertise to a new style of "jungle" which we will discuss more in the upcoming months, but it is definitely far from tropical," says Camarillo. "We are very excited to introduce Crysis-style sandbox gameplay to a different, yet ultimately familiar environment."

He adds that the team "expects to have increased verticality over the traditional Crysis sandbox," and as such the enemy AI is being overhauled to utilize their new surroundings. When queried on the "Crysis is going to consoles, so the design must be gimped" topic, Camarillo explains that that's "not necessarily" the case. "In some ways it has allowed us to avoid overdesigning features, to keep the focus narrower and tight for a compelling experience on all platforms."

Further, Crytek want their Far Cry successor to finally be included among the "successful cross-platform shooter franchises." "There are many successful cross-platform shooter franchises on the market, and it's time that Crysis sat proudly among that group." Crysis 2 is currently slated for release in the latter half of 2010.

Crysis 2 takes the crisis to New York

The supersuit-enhanced cat has officially leaped out of the bag, folks -- Crysis 2 will be set in New York City. According to a "World Exclusive" Twitter image of the next PlayStation: The Official Magazine's cover (partially seen above), the upcoming sequel plans to give players a chance to blast off the faces of "aliens invading NYC," employing the already teased "Nanosuit 2.0."

As the Crysis 2 cover is set for the March issue of PTOM, we expect to start hearing more details on the sequel over the next few weeks as subscribers start getting their copies (and subsequently begin filling the internet with said details).

I'll be getting this on Xbox 360, most likely used unless they decide to include some preorder bonuses.   ;)

Crysis 2's New York will be "unique"
Crytek promises to deliver "five big things you'll remember forever"

Some might have been disheartened to hear that Crysis 2 was swapping the lush rainforest environment of the first game for a more familiar city setting, but developer Crytek has promised to deliver a "unique" take on New York in its upcoming shooter.

"I Am Legend and The Day After Tomorrow were unique and both 'owned' a version of New York," Crytek president Cevat Yerli told Edge. "Ours, likewise, is in harmony with the Nanosuit. In Crysis, we changed that island in ways the player didn't expect. Expect bigger here. It'll be a New York City like none in games or cinema."

Executive producer Nathan Camarillo said: "It was a large island in Crysis but you weren't interested in every square inch. There were large expanses, funnels and action spaces, and we're doing the same with New York. It's a comparable size.

"You have this freedom to explore these small pockets and go really deep on details, but seeing all of New York isn't necessarily that exciting, and it's not great for pacing or telling the kind of story we want. It's a constrained freedom," he continued, adding that the action will span "three storeys up and down".

"We know what was good about Crysis, what we needed to improve and what was fun about the game, and we can build on a core we no longer have to find. We can have those signature moments that only Crytek can do in realtime - those five big things you'll remember forever."

Publisher EA said recently that Crysis 2 will launch before December 31, 2010 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Crysis 2 screenshots emerge
First official images released

The first proper Crysis 2 screenshots have appeared on the internet.
The PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 sequel's set in a warring New York City that's been attacked by terrorists (and probably teraforming aliens).

A magazine that was shown the Xbox version of the game, claimed it is "among the best looking games available on any system". If these aren't PC bullshots, it probably is.

Crysis 2 PS3 'performs better than 360 version'
Crytek admits it's getting more from Sony's machine

Crytek has admitted that it's getting "slightly more performance" out of the PS3 version of Crysis 2 than the Xbox 360 edition.

However, the studio's business development boss Carl Jones said he was confident the game would become the best-looking title "on every platform".

The studio has previously revealed that it overcame problems squeezing the game's massive CryEngine 3 onto console.

However, it went on to claim that the game's graphics were the best you'd ever see on console - something CVG's own experience of the Xbox 360 version backed up.

Our man Ryan saw just a snippet of gameplay running on PS3, and said it looked exactly the same as the 360 version. But now it appears that over the course of the title, Sony's system might have the edge.

Jones added that Crytek had no difficulty developing for the PS3 in comparison to the 360.

"We haven't found it more difficult to develop for PS3," he told CVG sister magazine PSM3.

"We're lucky in the fact that we've come to the generation slightly later than other people - the ones who were trying to build the first technology and games were surprised at how different the PS3 was. We took our time and worked out the right way to approach it.

"At the moment, we're getting slightly more performance from PS3 compared to 360. I'm very confident that products using CryEngine 3 are going to come out as the best looking, or at least in the top three, on every platform."

Crytek boss: free game demos 'prohibitively expensive'

Crytek co-founder Cevat Yerli tells Develop that you might be paying money just for the privilege of trying Crysis 2 before it comes out. Yerli calls free game demos an antiquated "luxury" that have become "prohibitively expensive" to produce. The result: many studios will either stop releasing them or try to charge for an early test of the game. EA has already brought this idea up as "pre-launch DLC," and Yerli says that what EA is "really trying to do is get investment back but while being as fair to the gamer as much as it can." He continues, "Ultimately, it will be a better deal for the gamer."

Yerli says his company hasn't yet decided whether there will be a demo for Crysis 2 or not, though he thankfully admits that a paid demo should be "something more than a small demo released for free." Takeaway is the same, regardless: because of the development cost of building a giveaway level or two before launch, Yerli says the days of free demos are numbered.

free demo's days are numbered are they? Gamers will soon have to buy brand new games to play online or pay extra will they? Gaming is getting way too expensive. If gamers have to start paying exta to play online and buy game demo's then microsoft will seriously have to think about making gold membership free, as the two main selling points of gold are being able to play online and download free game demos. Next they will be charging extra for the instruction manuals!

Already do, they make up a small percentage of the RRP  :)
