Vanquish: PS3 Primary Platform
Third-person shooter by Resident Evil creator set for release this year.

Platinum Games' upcoming shooter Vanquish is having its development focused on the PlayStation 3.

"We're leading development on PS3," said Vanquish director Shinji Mikami, of Resident Evil fame. "Obviously each console has its own unique requirements and limitations, but we feel if we can create a good enough presentation on PS3, we'll be off to a good start."

The third person shooter was announced in January and set to be released in Japan by the end of the year on Xbox 360 and PS3 - no decision has been made as to whether the title will come out on PC or not.

That is sound logic.  The PS3 is the 'Mount Everest' of platform development.  If a developer can get their PS3 version running smooth, they should have little problem porting it to other platforms.

Mikami explains why Vanquish is single-player only

During the recent Vanquish media unveiling in Tokyo, creator Shinji Mikami outed the action-shooter game's lack of multiplayer functionality. "That's the main reason we're keeping Vanquish as a single-player experience -- to deliver the level of impact, the level of detail and the visuals we want to offer," Mikami offered at the press event, reports Eurogamer.

Apparently, due to the fact that the single-player game is "very intense" and "full of action," a multiplayer component would require "shaving a lot of things off" in order to make them work. It would seem that Mikami's more interested in Vanquish's main campaign impressing than the title having legs, though he would argue that a tacked-on multiplayer does little in the interest of serving gamers. "It kind of boils down to whether you have the multiplayer but you don't have that much impact, and end up being like everyone else ... or even below par." Yep, we're just as shocked and appreciative of his refreshing honesty as you are.

I could not agree more.  Bravo, Platinum Games.

If the first game is a success, I look forward to actual "working" online-multiplayer in the sequel.

A New Look At Vanquish, From The Creator of Resident Evil

Are you excited yet about Vanquish, the third-person shoot 'em up from Bayonetta and Madworld studio Platinum Games? Did we mention it's from the guy who made God Hand? And did you see these new screen shots?

Game director Shinji Mikami's latest may feature familiar shooting action—with, apparently, a Bayonetta style "Witch Time"-like time-slowing effect dubbed "Augmented Reality Mode"—and super-suit attired soldier Sam, but Vanquish looks like a higher-speed take on your standard action game. A look at these new Vanquish screens shows off big bosses, bad-ass futuristic knee slides and developer Platinum's expertise with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 hardware.

Vanquish is supposed to be out in 2010—at least in Japan.

I now realize why this character looks so familiar.

Old-school Ultron (Marvel, Avengers)
